Evaluation and Design Exploration of Solar Harvested-Energy Prediction Algorithm

    No full text
To respond to variations in solar energy, harvested-energy prediction is essential to harvested-energy management approaches. The effectiveness of such approaches is dependent on both the achievable accuracy and computation overhead of prediction algorithm implementation. This paper presents detailed evaluation of a recently reported solar energy prediction algorithm to determine empirical bounds on achievable accuracy and implementation overhead using an effective error evaluation technique. We evaluate the algorithm performance over varying prediction horizons and propose guidelines for algorithm parameter selection across different real solar energy profiles to simplify implementation. The prediction algorithm computation overhead is measured on actual hardware to demonstrate prediction accuracy-cost trade-off. Finally, we motivate the basis for dynamic prediction algorithm and show that more than 10% increase in prediction accuracy can be achieved compared to static algorithm

[ABSTRACT] The objective of our project has been the implementation of a multi-objective genetic algorithm (i.e., VEGA type), where given an application to be optimized for a certain embedded system, it returns the best DDT for each of included dynamic variable in the target application. The developed framework makes use of application profiling and performs the exploration using as basis to prune the design space the theoretical modelling on the implementations of the DDTs presented in the methodology developed by Prof. David Atienza in his thesis, entitled “Multi-Level Refinement Methodology of the Dynamic Memory Subsystem for High- Performance Multimedia Embedded Systems”.Depto. de Arquitectura de Computadores y AutomáticaFac. de InformáticaTRUEunpu

In this essay, Manuel Atienza intends to propose a general model to analyze and critically evaluate judicial reasoning. Moving from the theoretical framework elaborated in one of his most famous works, Diritto come argomentazione, Atienza distinguishes the moment of the analysis – aimed to identify, and then to “understand” and “comprehend” the arguments used in a legal reasoning – and that of evaluation – meant to critically evaluate those arguments. To make the instrument of analysis more accessible, the Author proposes to apply it to a fictional case. Instead, regarding evaluation, he clarifies the concepts of moral objectivism, universalism, coherence, consequentialism, social morality, justified morality and reasonableness, upholding them as basic criteria for evaluating judicial arguments. In the final part of the essay, Giovanni Blando proposes an analysis and a critical evaluation of the judgment Sez. Un. civ., 09/09/2021, n. 24414, based on the model developed by Manuel Atienza. After having distinguished the arguments used by the Court, the Author develops some critical remarks on the choice of judges regarding the crucifix exhibition in classrooms

Accelerator-Driven Data Arrangement to Minimize Transformers Run-Time on Multi-Core Architectures

    No full text
The increasing complexity of transformer models in artificial intelligence expands their computational costs, memory usage, and energy consumption. Hardware acceleration tackles the ensuing challenges by designing processors and accelerators tailored for transformer models, supporting their computation hotspots with high efficiency. However, memory bandwidth can hinder improvements in hardware accelerators. Against this backdrop, in this paper we propose a novel memory arrangement strategy, governed by the hardware accelerator’s kernel size, which effectively minimizes off-chip data access. This arrangement is particularly beneficial for end-to-end transformer model inference, where most of the computation is based on general matrix multiplication (GEMM) operations. Additionally, we address the overhead of non-GEMM operations in transformer models within the scope of this memory data arrangement. Our study explores the implementation and effectiveness of the proposed accelerator-driven data arrangement approach in both single- and multi-core systems. Our evaluation demonstrates that our approach can achieve up to a 2.7x speed increase when executing inferences employing state-of-the-art transformers

    No full text
In this work, two differentiated parts are integrated. The first is a critical comment by the Author on the theses advanced by Professor Manuel Atienza in his essay: Ethics of the legal professions, included in his work Philosophy of Law and social transformation. The Author shows his agreement with the proposal of Atienza to consider professional legal Ethics as applied ethics. The argumenta of Atienza are also exposed in relation to the peculiarity of the legal ethics when they are projected to the professional activity of the judges, prosecutors and lawyers. In the second part the Author prolongs the intellectual stimulus of Atienza's conception, proposing five basic models, in which there are many other ways of conceiving the professional legal deontology of the lawyer and, also, he outlines a decalogue of the ethical du-ties for the lawyer in the exercise of the legal profession

Adaptive Task Migration Policies for Thermal Control in MPSoCs

In deep submicron circuits, high temperatures have created critical issues in reliability, timing, performance, coolings costs and leakage power. Task migration techniques have been proposed to manage efficiently the thermal distribution in multi-processor systems but at the cost of important performance penalties. While traditional techniques have focused on reducing the average temperature of the chip, they have not considered the effect that temperature gradients have in system reliability. In this work, we explore the benefits of thermal-aware task migration techniques for embedded multi-processor systems. We show the implementation issues of task migration policies on next generation architectural template of distributed memory multicore systems and we discuss the programmer's implications. Built on top of this programming model, we propose several policies that are able to reduce the average temperature of the chip and the thermal gradients with a negligible performance overhead. With our techniques, hot spots and temperature gradients are decreased up to 30% with respect to state-of-the-art thermal management approache

Modelling and Simulation Challenges and Solutions in Cooling Systems for Nanoscale Integrated Circuits

    No full text
The power density in modern Integrated Circuits (ICs) is tremendous. For example, Multi-Processor Systems-on-Chip (MPSoCs) nowadays undergo temperature swings of 40 degrees in 100 milliseconds or less, with rapidly emerging and vanishing sub-millimeter hot spots. As such, not only a simulation-based cooling assessment is vital, but one has to simulate the on-chip thermal phenomena jointly with the heat dissipation system — historically, a challenge. In recent years, however, the idea of coupling traditional 3D chip simulators with heat dissipation models written in Equation-Based Modelling (EBM) languages has proven to be a game changer. EBM languages allow one to compose a model by assembling components described in terms of Differential and Algebraic Equations (DAE) and have the simulation code generated automatically. In this paper, we take a tutorial viewpoint on the matter just sketched, to put the reader in the position of exploiting the above technology. We also present the first nucleus of a model library for cooling systems, that we release as free software for the scientific and engineering community
