No full textDissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras/Inglês e Literatura Correspondente, Florianópolis, 2004Abstract : This thesis examines the work of the filmmaker Maya Deren in the light of the aesthetics proposed by her main writings -"An Anagram of Ideas on Art, Form and Film"(1946), "Cinema as an Independent Art Form" (1946), "Cinematography: The Creative Use of Reality"(1960) -, as well as its relations to her first short film Meshes of the Afternoon, placing it among the numerous aesthetic and film trends in which it figured. Her writings depict a solid theoretic background, as well as her attempt to construct what she called "poetic cinema," through the conjunction of various forms of artistic expression. Such an attempt is made no less evident in the analysis of Meshes of the Afternoon, whose dream-like narrative evolves from the peculiar combination of symbolic elements and is responsible for the poetic effect coveted by the filmmaker.Esta dissertação tem como objetivo examinar o trabalho da cineasta Maya Deren, principalmente no que se refere à estética proposta por ela em seus principais escritos: "An Anagram of Ideas on Art, Film and Form" (1946), "Cinema as an Independent Art Form" (1946) "Cinematography: The Creative Use of Reality" (1960) - e à relação que estes estabelecem com seu primeiro curta-metragem Meshes of the Afternoon, situando-o em meio às inúmeras correntes estéticas e cinematográficas com as quais se relacionou. Seus escritos evidenciam uma formação teórica sólida, bem como sua tentativa de elaborar o que denominou de "poetic cinema,"através do encontro das diversas formas de expressão artística. cosmology through the in-depth analysis of a singular, broadly-extant, and sacred entity
called God L. Focus is placed upon portrayals created in the Central Area of settlement
(lowland Guatemala and Mexico) and the timeframe of the Classic era. While seeking to
uncover knowledge derived from the Classic Maya epoch, data extends beyond this
temporal boundary in order to fix visual forms within the continuum of cultural
development. My research is the first comprehensive study of the innovation,
characterization, function, and meaning of God L. Collected together within the pages of
this dissertation are numerous examples drawn from the corpus of Maya art. The
examination of this deity, whose qualities and narrative exemplify a sacrosanct existence,
sheds light on the concept of k’uh, an indigenous Maya word used to describe holy beings
and things. Various depictions of God L are analyzed from the perspective of an art
historical methodology that is augmented by information drawn from other academic

Chocholá ceramics and the polities of northwestern Yucatán
No full texttextMaya artists working in the northern Yucatán Peninsula c. 700-800 CE began creating a new ceramic style. Deeply carved and exhibiting complex iconography and hieroglyphic inscriptions, Chocholá ceramics have long been recognized as among the most beautiful items produced by ancient Maya craftsmen. Indeed, the Chocholá style can be associated with a number of firsts in Maya studies: the first published explorations, the first major art historical investigations of ceramics, the first attempts at ceramic seriation and the first translations of the dedicatory formula all include images of Chocholá pots. Many examples lack provenience, however, due to extensive looting and the corpus has been relegated to a shadowy corner of the Maya world as a result. With the aid of new archaeological information and advances in iconographic and epigraphic studies, I develop an interdisciplinary rubric for classifying Chocholá pieces. Additionally, I analyze vessel imagery and texts, thus deciphering ostensible meanings as well as identifying the kinds of messages elites were trying to project through ownership and exchange. As with other high-status commodities, these ceramics functioned as prestige items and facilitated regional alliances through gifting and feasting. An analysis of temporal setting illuminates the aesthetic innovation and traditionalism Chocholá patrons manipulated in order to legitimize their own standing in such contexts. My work results in a more refined picture of extended northern socio-political interaction and interconnection. I show that one extremely powerful site—Oxkintok, in the hilly Puuc region of Yucatán—produced such vessels and disseminated them south, west and northeast. In dialogue with Oxkintok's expanding sphere of political influence, stylistic variations also developed in these outlying regions. Ultimately, I use the confluence of data to reconstruct a more concrete system of intra-regional connection and interchange.Art Histor
Maya Gods of War
No full textNumerous archaeological projects have found substantial evidence of the military nature of Maya society, and warfare is a frequent theme of Maya art. Maya Gods of War investigates the Classic period Maya gods who were associated with weapons of war and the flint and obsidian from which those weapons were made. Author Karen Bassie-Sweet traces the semantic markers used to distinguish flint from other types of stone, surveys various types of Chahk thunderbolt deities and their relationship to flint weapons, and explores the connection between lightning and the ruling elite. Additional chapters review these fire and solar deities and their roles in Maya warfare and examine the nature and manifestations of the Central Mexican thunderbolt god Tlaloc, his incorporation into the Maya pantheon, and his identification with meteors and obsidian weapons. Finally, Bassie-Sweet addresses the characteristics of the deity God L, his role as an obsidian merchant god, and his close association with the ancient land route between the highland Guatemalan obsidian sources and the lowlands. Through analysis of the nature of the Teotihuacán deities and exploration of the ways in which these gods were introduced into the Maya region and incorporated into the Maya worldview, Maya Gods of War offers new insights into the relationship between warfare and religious beliefs in Mesoamerica. An Afternoon with Maya Angelou
No full textMaya Angelou, a nationally renowned poet, educator, historian and author, is one of the great voices of contemporary literature. In addition, she is an accomplished actress, playwright, producer, and director. Dr. Angelou received an emmy nomination for best supporting actress in the television series Roots and received the coveted Golden Eagle Award for the PBS documentary Afro-American in the Arts. However, she is perhaps best known for the public for her autobiographies and books of poetry.
Maya Angelou has authored more than 10 best selling books and numerous articles in publications such as Life, Cosmopolitan, Harper\u27s Bazaar and The New York Times. She has received a wide variety of honors an awards including a Pulitizer Prize nomination for poetry, the Horatio Alger Award and 30 honorary Doctorate degrees from schools such as Smith College and Lawrence University. Today, she continues to lecture throughout the country and abroad, sharing the black experience and educating her audience on the human condition.

Quantity and quality: naturalness in metaphysics
No full textEver since David Lewis argued for the indispensibility of natural properties, they have become a staple of mainstream metaphysics. This dissertation is a critical examination of natural properties. What roles can natural properties play in metaphysics, and what structure do natural properties have? In the first half of the dissertation, I argue that natural properties cannot do all the work they are advertised to do. In the second half of the dissertation, I look at questions relating to the structure of natural properties. I argue that the metric structure of fundamental quantitative properties cannot be reduced to mereological structure, and I argue that the simplistic picture of natural properties as monadic must be abandoned in light of theories of fundamental physics.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical references (p. 151-153)by Maya Eddo
