The present work discusses the literary representation of death, according to two works by the Mozambican author Saleiman Cassamo - O Regresso do Morto and Palestra para um Morto. Because death is a recurring subject on his tales and his novel, we decided to study the specificity of this matter, taking into account the socio-cultural context in which it happens. But before, we begin by carrying out a theoretical reflection on the subject, revisiting culture and literature throughout time. Subsequently, we present an overview of death in some Mozambican works and, finally, in Saleiman Cassamo’s narrative. The most striking aspect of the works in question is how the characters live with death. Death is not something disturbing to the living because they live well together with it, choosing, sometimes, to give themselves to death in order to find the peace that they did not have in life. Suleiman Cassamo provides the reader with his own vision of death and perspective on life, leading the reader to a self-reflection on the many expressions of his own existence

During century Mozambican woman lived social and economical sub alternazation toward men that is considered as the chief, the patriarch and the owner of family wealth both in patriarch society as well as matrilineal (female line). The literature that has to do with socio-economical differences of gender has assured (accepted) the major part, criticizing the subordinate situation of women and, and therefore fighting for the empowerment and the defence of women in “O regresso do morto” (The Coming Back of the death) by Suleiman Cassamo shows and announces the complex social and economical situation of women seeking to reflect about how social differences are built, taking into account the social determination of the process such as the economical power of men ,especially in father line societies. The author of the coming back of death rethinks the must of masculine power and represents, even tragically as well as satirical disguising of social disapprove of this global view of the Word (society)

No full text
Adult comics have developed in the Arab world as an independent literary genre and are often used as a tool for social criticism. Linguistically, this new cultural product tends to favor the use of the vernacular (‘āmmiyya) as a written variety instead of standard Arabic (Høigilt 2017a, Høigilt 2019, De Blasio 2020, inter alia). However, in the comic books Ṣālūn Ṭāriq al-Khurāfī (The salon of Ṭāriq al-Khurāfī) and in its prequel Yūtūbiā (Utopia), both by the Lebanese author ‘Umar Khūrī, standard Arabic, used by some characters instead of the vernacular, also finds a place. Therefore, starting from the definition of language as a marker of the identity and as a symbolic resource (Suleiman 2013), the aim of the study is to investigate the link between language variety and the identity of the different characters and to examine what social and political functions language is invested with within the fictional societies of these comics strips.

Market Risk and Stock Return of Listed Financial Service Firms in Nigeria

No full text
The trading financial instruments in the capital market by Financial Service Firms (FSF) have generated return arising from changes in the prices of stock which exposed the firms to market risk. An effective market risk decision remains significant to determining stock return level realized from the volume and value of stock traded. This study examines the effect of market risk on stock return of listed FSF in Nigeria. The population of this study consists of fifty-six (56) financial service firms listed in the Nigerian Stock Exchange Market. In arriving at the sample size of twenty-nine (29) firms the purposive sampling technique and filtering criteria were employed. Data were sourced secondarily from the audited annual report of financial service firms, Nigeria Stock Exchange fact book, and other relevant financial service firms’ websites for period of twelve (12) years (2007-2018). Panel multiple regression technique of data analysis was applied using the ordinary least square estimator. The findings of the study revealed that book to market ratio as a proxy of market risk was insignificantly negative on stock return during the period under review. Net interest margin as a proxy of market risk revealed a significant positive effect on stock return during the period of review. Also, the study revealed that control variables of firm size, leverage had significant positive effects on stock return, though; the effect of monetary policy rate was positive but insignificant on stock return. The study concluded that a higher book to market ratio would reduce stock return and to a larger extent the reduction in stock return may not be affected significantly. It also concluded that a higher net interest margin would result to a higher stock return and vice versa. The study recommended that decision-makers and portfolio managers of financial service firms should employ appropriate risk strategies through derivatives, forwards, futures, swaps, options that can mitigate market risk in order to optimize return. John Baily (rubab and dutar) and Veronica Doubleday (vocal and daireh) Together we have played our renditions of Afghan music in different settings around the world, with other musicians, or as a duo. Afghan collaborators include the singer Ustad Abdul-Wahab Madadi, and members of the Mahmood family of tabla players: Ustad Asef, Ustad Aref and Yussof, and the amateur tabla player Suleiman Haqpana. For many years the Greek musician Matthaios Tsahourides was a valued member of our group Ensemble Bakhtar; he plays the Pontic lyra, a bowed lute. We have released several CDs, mostly under our own label, Bolbol, but also with Metier. We pay homage to our teachers in Herat (Ustad Amir Jan and Ustad Rahim Khushnawaz, Gada Muhammad, Zainab Herawi and Madar-e Zahir, and also (for John, on rubab) the renowned Ustad Muhammad Omar in Kabul. Continuous and Step-level Pay-off Functions in Public Good Games: A Conceptual Analysis

No full text
Conflicts between individuals’ and collective interests are ubiquitous in social life. Numerous experimental studies have investigated the resolution of such conflicts using public good games with either continuous or step-level payoff functions. A conceptual analysis using both classic game theory and social exchange theory shows that these two types of games are fundamentally different. A continuous function game is a social dilemma in that it contains a conflict between individual and collective interests whereas a step-level game is primarily a social coordination game. Thus, we conclude that one can not safely generalize results from step-level to continuous form games. Additionally, our analysis shows that the distinction between continuous and single-step games can be blurred by segmenting a continuous function into steps or adding steps to a single-step game. We identify characteristics of the payoff function that conceptually mark the transition from a dilemma to a coordination problem.

An analytical study of the theatre of the Syrian playwright Saadallah Wannous, with particular emphasis on the plays written after the 1967 war

No full text
This study is an examination of the life and work of the Syrian dramatist Saadallah Wannous (1941-1997). Wannous's name is virtually unknown in the West; only two academic studies of any significance have appeared in English on this eminent and challenging writer, who was honoured by UNESCO at the end of his life. Even in the Arab world his standing rests largely upon his celebrity as a cultural icon, since professional performances of his plays are rare due to the decline of the theatre in the region, and little attention has been devoted to theatre studies by Arab academics. The two studies in English do not attempt to be comprehensive but focus on particular stages of Wannous's career. This study is, therefore, the first to encompass the full range of Wannous's work. To do so it combines an account of his life which seeks to comprehend the various forces that shaped his thinking with an analysis of his dramatic works. The study concentrates on the plays written in the years following the trauma inflicted on the Arab world by the catastrophe of their defeat in the Arab-Israeli war of June, 1967. Wannous's career can be divided into three phases: the immature plays of his young manhood which are influenced by European models and generally focus on the social condition of the individual; his middle period - the `theatre of politicisation', when his Marxist politics were the main factor shaping his drama; and his late works, which are characterised by an extraordinary freedom of thought and expression. The introduction places Wannous in his historical and sociocultural context and provides a brief background explaining the literary and theatrical traditions of the Arab world that influenced his activity as a dramatist. Each phase is then examined in turn and the plays are analysed in accordance with the focus of the study. This means that emphasis is given to the middle period, but no significant work is neglected. The study aims to trace the trajectory of Wannous's development using a variety of sources: the plays themselves, Wannous's own journalism and critical writings, interviews with his widow, his friends and colleagues, and numerous journals, books and articles, some of which contain important interviews with Wannous that shed light on his thought and ways of working. Use is also made of the two studies mentioned above. The study shows that Wannous's theatre was influenced by the key political, social and cultural developments of his time, and that he constantly sought to find forms that would express those transformations in dramatic terms
