    Molecular characterization of ESBL gene in Citrobacter spp. and antibacterial activity of omega-3 against resistant isolates

    The study aimed to investigate the prevalence and resistance pattern of different Citrobacter spp., phenotypically and genotypically, to β-lactam antibiotics, then to evaluate the antibacterial activity of omega-3 extracted from flaxseed against isolates that harboring resistance genes. Herein, 19 Citrobacter isolates were isolated from 100 stool and urine samples taken from patients attended to AL-Sadar Hospital during June- December 2016. Clinical samples were then cultured on specific media, thereafter, isolates were identified depending on morphological, biochemical characteristics and VITK-2. The results showed that the Citrobacter spp. comprise 19/78 (24%) of positive bacterial growth on macConky agar, from which 14.1% were C. freundii, C. koseri represented 6.1% and C. farmeri were 3.8% of the total. The results of antibiotic susceptibility showed that all Citrobacter 100% isolates were resistant to ampicillin and cefoxitin, but were sensitive to imipinim. Moreover, the isolates initally showed different degrees of resistant to β-lactam antibiotics. Furthermore, by confirmatory test, the results observed that 17/19 (89.4%) of the isolated were extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL - producers). Finally, using the PCR technique to detect blaGenes, the results revealed that 14/17 (82.3) of potential ESBL producing Citrobacter harbored one or more ESBL genes. These included 10 isolates of C. freundii and 4 isolates of C. koseri. In related work, extracts of essential fatty acid semicarbazide - omega3 (EFASC) from Linum usitatissium (Flaxseed) were tested to evaluate their activity against resistant isolates. The results demonstrate the broad spectrum antibacterial property of EFASC compounds against resistant bacteria. In conclusion, this study found increase prevalence of multi-drug resistance MDR Citrobacter spp. as causative agents in clinical cases. Considering the antibacterial activity of EFASC that displayed high activity against resistant pathogens, deservedly, attention must be paid to developing their use as alternative antibiotics

    Evaluate microbial profile and IL-17 level in transmission transfusion infection patients

    Transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs) an important causes of  morbidity and mortality among recipients of blood /blood products since it among the essential vehicles for infectious agents that lead to disability or  death. So this study aimed to evaluate the important causative agents and the role of IL-17 in progressive disease . A Case-control study was performed to 100 patients with Transfusion blood attended   to  AL-Sadder teaching hospital with group of 30 healthy individual as control. Blood sample was collected from all patients and control. IL-17 level were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The result shown that Hemodialysis patients 54 (54%) patient from which 40(74%) suffering from TTI, HCV were most common causative agents with 42 % and the male recorded 63%. While 46(46%) patients with thalassemia from which 32(70%) were TTI and HCV a most common pathogen with 19(41 %), the male higher than female with frequency (65%). In conclusion: This result explain that HCV infected more than non-infected HD patients  and the serum IL-17 level increased significantly in HD patients with HCV, then patients without HCV infection in comparison with healthy control group

    The cancer burden continues to grow globally, exerting tremendous physical, emotional and financial strain on individuals, families, communities and health systems, immune dysfunction is an important cause of tumor development. A case -control study aimed to assess the role of  IL-17  serum level in pathophysiology of lung cancer patients.150 patients  attending to Middle Euphrates Cancer Center  in AL-Najaf province from  September  till December  2021 that included   6(4%) small cell carcinoma patients  and 144 (94 %) non small carcinoma patients  from which squamous cell carcinoma patients represent 72(48%), Adenocarcenoma 48(16 %) and large –cell lung carcinoma 24(16%). as well as 30 apparently healthy subjects as control group . Two ml of  vien blood were collected from all subjects put in gel tube to separate serum that used to estimate the  IL-17 level  by ELISA. The results showed a significant increase (P<0.05) in serum concentration of IL-17 in lung cancer patients compare to healthy subjects. According to stage of lung cancer  the concentration of IL-17 increased with severity  of disease and this considar as biomarker for prograssve of state.&nbsp

    Accuracy of Transforming Growth Factor-Beta in Serum and Synovial Fluid as Rheumatoid Arthritis Prognostic Factors

    Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) An autoimmunity of the joints which is now seen as a major public health concern. Therefore, finding new biomarkers is crucial to improve RA sufferers\u27 quality of life. Several cytokines increased the inflammatory cascade which linked to pathophysiology of RA.  This investigation aimed to determine the validity of transforming growth factor-beta-1 (TGF-β1) in synovial fluid and serum as prognostic factor and which one is better for rheumatoid arthritis disease follow up. Material and Methods: In Al-Saddar Medical City Rheumatology Unit in the Najaf governorate, 80 patients were included in case-control research. These patients were identified by specialized who classified the patients according to stages of disease into mild stage (stage 1 and 2) and aggressive (stage 3 and 4 who had knee effusion and synovial fluid separation). Venous blood samples (3ml) drawn from patients and controls were transferred to a gel tube for serum separation that used to measure the TGF-β1 level in accordance (BT LAB/China), RF level and anti-CCP level by ELISA assay. knee synovial fluid was collected from RA patients in aggressive stage and from patient suffering from knee trauma as control group which included 18 patients not have RA. The result demonstrated that Females and aged individuals in AL-NAJAF province more incidence with RA disease. TGF-β1 serum level increased significantly with disease severity and positive correlated with ACCP autoantibody, according to ROC prognosis analysis AUC of TGF-β1 serum level was excellent 0.9 with 100% sensitivity and specificity. While ROC analysis for TGF-β1 synovial fluid was 0.8 with 77.8% sensitivity and 86.7% specificity Conclusion: Using ROC analysis, which supported good TGF level in both serum and synovial fluid diagnosis accuracy and enabled more sensitive and precise discrimination in RA disease. Instead of using synovial fluid separation as a diagnostic for excellent prognosis in RA disease, TGF-β1 and ACCP blood levels can help patients avoid discomfort and stress

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
