    Harnessing high altitude solar power

    No full text
As an intermediate solution between Glaser's satellite solar power (SSP) and ground-based photovoltaic (PV) panels, this paper examines the collection of solar energy using a high-altitude aerostatic platform. A procedure to calculate the irradiance in the medium/high troposphere, based on experimental data, is described. The results show that here a PV system could collect about four to six times the energy collected by a typical U.K.-based ground installation, and between one-third and half of the total energy the same system would collect if supported by a geostationary satellite (SSP). The concept of the aerostat for solar power generation is then briefly described together with the equations that link its main engineering parameters/variables. A preliminary sizing of a facility stationed at 6 km altitude and its costing, based on realistic values of the input engineering parameters, is then presented

REDI for Binned Data: A Random Empirical Distribution Imputation Method for Estimating Continuous Incomes

    No full text
Researchers often need to work with categorical income data. The typical nonparametric (including midpoint) and parametric estimation methods used to estimate summary statistics both have advantages, but they carry assumptions that cause them to deviate in important ways from real-world income distributions. The method introduced here, random empirical distribution imputation (REDI), imputes discrete observations using binned income data, while also calculating summary statistics. REDI achieves this through random cold-deck imputation from a real-world reference data set (demonstrated here using the Current Population Survey Annual Social and Economic Supplement). This method can be used to reconcile bins between data sets or across years and handle top incomes. REDI has other advantages for computing values of an income distribution that is nonparametric, bin consistent, area and variance preserving, continuous, and computationally fast. The author provides proof of concept using two years of the American Community Survey. The method is available as the redi command for Stata

Investigation of the RESURF Dielectric Inserted (REDI) LDMOS as a novel Silicon-based RF Power Device

    No full text
In this paper, a novel power device named as RESURF Dielectric Inserted (REDI) LDMOS is put forward. It is fully compatible with standard CMOS technology, which can sharply reduce the cost. In this novel REDI LDMOS, a RESURF structure and a dielectric region are inserted at the suitable position of the drift region to reconstruct the electric field and the electric potential distributions of the channel region and the drift region, which can effectively reduce the peak electric field and increase the breakdown voltage. The impacts of key device parameters on REDI LDMOS behaviors are comprehensively studied with device simulation tools. The structural parameters are optimized to obtain acceptable high breakdown voltage (> 10V), excellent on-state behavior and high frequency performance (> 10GHz).http://gateway.webofknowledge.com/gateway/Gateway.cgi?GWVersion=2&SrcApp=PARTNER_APP&SrcAuth=LinksAMR&KeyUT=WOS:000265971000049&DestLinkType=FullRecord&DestApp=ALL_WOS&UsrCustomerID=8e1609b174ce4e31116a60747a720701Engineering, Electrical & ElectronicPhysics, AppliedEICPCI-S(ISTP)

Supporting visual quality assessment with machine learning

    No full text
Objective metrics for visual quality assessment often base their reliability on the explicit modeling of the highly non-linear behavior of human perception; as a result, they may be complex and computationally expensive. Conversely, machine learning (ML) paradigms allow to tackle the quality assessment task from a different perspective, as the eventual goal is to mimic quality perception instead of designing an explicit model the human visual system. Several studies already proved the ability of ML-based approaches to address visual quality assessment; nevertheless, these paradigms are highly prone to overfitting, and their overall reliability may be questionable. In fact, a prerequisite for successfully using ML in modeling perceptual mechanisms is a profound understanding of the advantages and limitations that characterize learning machines. This paper illustrates and exemplifies the good practices to be followed.Intelligent SystemsElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

This research is composed of two units coordinated among themselves: the translation into Portuguese of excerpts from the book Experiments on the generation of insects, by Francesco Redi (1626-1698), preceded by an analysis of the author\u27s positions on the animal generation. The translated excerpts and the analysis carried out show that Redi, in addition to recognizing that the appearance of larvae on food was due to sexual reproduction in the flies, considered the existence of an intermediate type of spontaneous generation that would occur inside plants and live animals, from a certain "soul" or "virtue". In addition to considerations on the work of translation, the article contextualizes the work of Francesco Redi, highlighting his role in the development of observations and experiments with living beings in the early stages of the modern science
