    Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) is an important process in modern global nitrogen cycling. However, the contribution of anammox to ancient nitrogen biogeochemical cycles cannot currently be accounted for because the most characteristic lipid biomarkers of anammox bacteria, ladderane lipids containing concatenated series of cyclobutane moieties, do not preserve as such into the catagenetic window in the sedimentary record. Alternative lipid biomarkers that are more resistant to degradation are needed by the geochemical community to investigate the presence anammox in high maturity sediments and inform on past marine oxygen depletion, nitrogen cycling, and the formation of organic rich sediment such as black shale deposits. Here, we describe novel cyclic hydrocarbons produced by the simulated thermal maturation of anammox bacterial biomass. Alkyl branched tricyclic hydrocarbons were present in pyrolysates generated by hydrous pyrolysis experiments at temperatures >200 °C, in the window of oil generation. Two-dimensional gas chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed that these artificial maturation experiments generated multiple series of cyclic hydrocarbons. A representative product was isolated by preparative gas chromatography, but was shown to be composed of two co-eluting components. Their structures were partially identified, by way of two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), to be 4-octyl-tricyclo[7.3.0.02,8]dodecanes with the three concatenated rings comprising of 7, 4, and 5 carbons. This ring assemblage was further confirmed through NMR and mass spectral comparisons with four synthesized model compounds. The isolated components had a stable carbon isotopic composition similarly depleted in 13C as the ladderane fatty acids of the original anammox biomass, consistent with a ladderane lipid source. The C20 hydrocarbons could have formed from thermal ether cleavage and ring-opening of the C20-[5]- or [3]-ladderane glycerol ether, common membrane lipids of anammox bacteria. Molecular mechanic calculations were used to generate the relative structural stability of stereoisomers and the possible conversion steps to the formation of these components. These indicated that the 7-4-5 components were the result of the breakdown and rearrangement of bonds in the cyclobutane rings from biosynthetically-derived 4-4-4-4-4 ladderane lipids. These components were not detected in thermally mature sediment and rocks screened using conventional GC-MS analysis, however, by using more advanced chromatography methods these lipids may be still be helpful biomarkers for assessing past anammox in ancient sediments and crude oils

Diagnosis Alloxysta darci is mainly characterized by a small closed radial cell; the absence of pronotal carinae; the presence of a propodeal plate; antenna with rhinaria and club shape beginning on F4; F1 shorter than pedicel; and antenna longer than body length in both males and females. This species is similar to A. brevis, but can be differentiated by the length of antenna (longer than the body in A. darci, but shorter in A. brevis), and the marginal setae on the fore wing (longer in A. darci than in A. brevis).     Darci Bohn Recieves Outstanding Preceptor Award

    Darci Bohn (B.S. Dietetics, 1991) was recently received notified of her selection for an Outstanding Preceptor Award. This award, funded by the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics Foundation and the Nutrition & Dietetic Educators practice group, is intended to recognize individuals for the vital contributions they have made to the dietetics profession. Darci is a Board Certified Specialist in Gerontological Nutrition (CSG), and she is employed as a clinical dietitian at Valley Eldercare Center in Grand Forks. Darci was nominated by the Department of Nutrition & Dietetics at UND. She was one of only seven awardees chosen from across the nation. Excerpts from letters of support that were written by faculty and students serve as a testament to her identification as a worthy recipient of this honor: She motivates students by demonstrating passion and dedication to her job and the residents she serves. Students are impressed by the fact that she builds relationships with every resident she works with. She then challenges students to do the same ; Darci\u27s influence on students goes well beyond teaching the mechanics of nutrition care. She sets high standards and gladly shares her work space with students to create an environment in which they can succeed, but expects them to follow through with energy and commitment of their own ; As hectic as her schedule is each day, Darci Bohn still makes it a priority each year to give dietetic students the opportunity to gain further knowledge in long term care. I feel that my time with Darci was an experience I will always remember in my journey as a university student. Darci is an exceptional role model and treats all students as a respected future dietetics professional. Darci will be presented her award at the 2014 Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics annual conference and exhibition this fall in Atlanta, Georgia. She will also be featured at the Academy Member Showcase. Darci\u27s positive influence is a benefit to every student who enters the UND Coordinated Program in Dietetics. We are so fortunate to have such a capable and caring role model for our students to learn from. Congratulations Darci, for this well-deserved award

Essencialmente, almeja-se investigar de que maneira os estereótipos e as identidades linguístico-culturais se fazem presentes no personagem que representa os ilhéus. Duas questões principais norteiam o trabalho: o humorista, no processo de criação de seu personagem característico, cria apenas mais um estereótipo? Ou faz, através dessa composição, algo que pretende valorizar a identidade dos moradores nativos, buscando identificar o público com o personagem? O humorista em seu discurso busca engenhosamente construir, a partir de elementos simbólicos à disposição, um mecanismo de identificação que, se de um lado precisa recorrer diversas vezes a estereótipos, por outro o faz de maneira muito específica: elege as peculiaridades do "manezês", no qual procura identificar o personagem com o dito legítimo ilhéu, buscando, através dessa identificação/construção, valorar e valorizar cada vez mais a identidade mané. Busca-se, mediante uma análise qualitativa, colocar em discussão a questão da valoração da identidade do "Manezinho" pela articulação simbólica entre língua e identidade sob o viés desses novos gêneros humorísticos: os "programetes" de curta duração e o stand-up comedy, que passou a ser tão popular e recorrente na atualidade.Abstract : This research analyses the linguistic-discursive construction of the identity of the native "Manezinho" from the island of Santa Catarina, interpreted by the humorist Moriel da Costa in the "programetes" of the Atlântida FM radio and in his presentations of stand-up comedy, through his character Darci. We aim to investigate essentially in what way the stereotypes and linguistic-cultural identities are present in the character that represents the islanders. Two main questions guide the research: does the humorist, in the process of creation of his character, only create one more stereotype? Or, through his composition, does he do something that intends to valorize the identity of the native inhabitants, searching to identify the public with the character? In his speech, the humorist tries to ingeniously construct from elements at disposition, an identification mechanism. On the one hand, this mechanism has to appeal to stereotypes many times, and on the other hand, it can do it on a specific way: it elects the "manezês" peculiarities, where it searches to identify the character with the legitimate islander. Through this identification/construction, it aims to valorize more and more the "mané" identitity. By means of a qualitative analysis, we seek to put into discussion the issue of identity valuation of the "Manezinho" through symbolic articulation between language and identity, according to these new humorous genres: the "programetes" and the stand-up comedy, very popular and current today

    <i>Pseudodendrothrips darci</i> (Girault) <p>(Figs 5, 43)</p> <p> <i>Proscirtothrips darci</i> Girault, 1930: 1.</p> <p> This Australian species is very similar to <i>P. bhattii</i> as indicated above, but the pronotum usually has paired longitudinal dark markings (Fig. 5), although these are often weak, whereas <i>P. bhattii</i> never has such dark markings on the pronotum. Mound (1999) stated <i>P. darci</i> was not distinguishable from <i>P. bhatti</i> collected from <i>Morus</i> in Thailand, and suggested that <i>P. darci</i>, <i>P. bhattii</i> and <i>P. mori</i> might represent a single species. However, at least females of this species may be distinguished from the two Japanese species by stout setae on abdominal tergite and sternite IX (Figs 42, 43). <i>P. darci</i> is newly recorded from <i>Ficus</i> spp. and <i>Toxicodendron succedaneum</i> [Anacardiaceae] in Okinawa, Japan. Moreover, specimens from <i>Morus</i> at Bangkok, Thailand that were identified as <i>P. bhatti</i> in Mound (1999) are now recognized as <i>P. darci</i>, and specimens have also been studied from <i>Morus</i> at Kolkata, India [L.Mound in litt. 16.x.2017].</p> <p> <b>Specimens examined</b>. <b>JAPAN</b>: Ryukyus: Okinawa Pref.: Ishigaki-jima Island, nr.     Mesandrothrips darci (Girault) comb.n. (Figs 6, 18) Haplothrips darci Girault, 1930: 1. Described from a single female taken near Brisbane (Pitkin 1973), no further specimens of this species have been found. Antennal segment III of this holotype is unusually short (Fig. 18), segments IV–VI are scarcely paler at the base, and the mesopresternum is fully divided into lateral triangles (Fig. 6). Apart from these states, this specimen is very similar to specimens of M. inquilinus. Material studied.
