This paper analyzes dynamic changes of China's intra-industry trade with its major trading partners, Japan and the US, from 1980 to 2004. It also investigates to what extent foreign direct investment promoted intra-industry trade. The empirical results show that, while shares of China's intra-industry trade with both Japan and U.S rose substantially, its intra-industry trade with Japan has reached 35 per cent of the overall trade, considerably larger than 10 per cent with the US. Sino-Japan intra-industry trade concentrated in the electrical and machinery sectors accounted for 52 per cent and 46 per cent of overall trade respectively. On the other hand, it is in the chemical and food sectors where intra-industry trade represented a relatively large proportion of Sino-US trade, 50 per cent and 30 per cent accordingly in each sector. In addition, the analysis indicates that Japanese direct investment in China performed a significant role in enhancing intra-industry trade between Japan and China. However, it found no evidence that the US direct investment in China contributed to the growth of the bilateral intra-industry trade between the two countries.intra-industry trade; FDI; China

Exome sequencing links CEP120 mutation to maternally derived aneuploid conception risk

Study question: What are the genetic factors that increase the risk of aneuploid egg production? Summary answer: A non-synonymous variant rs2303720 within centrosomal protein 120 (CEP120) disrupts female meiosis in vitro in mouse. What is known already: The production of aneuploid eggs, with an advanced maternal age as an established contributing factor, is the major cause of IVF failure, early miscarriage and developmental anomalies. The identity of maternal genetic variants contributing to egg aneuploidy irrespective of age is missing. Study design, size, duration: Patients undergoing fertility treatment (n = 166) were deidentified and selected for whole-exome sequencing. Participants/materials, setting, methods: Patients self-identified their ethnic groups and their ages ranged from 22 to 49 years old. The study was performed using genomes from White, non-Hispanic patients divided into controls (97) and cases (69) according to the number of aneuploid blastocysts derived during each IVF procedure. Following a gene prioritization strategy, a mouse oocyte system was used to validate the functional significance of the discovered associated genetic variants. Main results and the role of chance: Patients producing a high proportion of aneuploid blastocysts (considered aneuploid if they missed any of the 40 chromatids or had extra copies) were found to carry a higher mutational burden in genes functioning in cytoskeleton and microtubule pathways. Validation of the functional significance of a non-synonymous variant rs2303720 within Cep120 on mouse oocyte meiotic maturation revealed that ectopic expression of CEP120:p.Arg947His caused decreased spindle microtubule nucleation efficiency and increased incidence of aneuploidy. Limitations, reasons for caution: Functional validation was performed using the mouse oocyte system. Because spindle building pathways differ between mouse and human oocytes, the defects we observed upon ectopic expression of the Cep120 variant may alter mouse oocyte meiosis differently than human oocyte meiosis. Further studies using knock-in 'humanized' mouse models and in human oocytes will be needed to translate our findings to human system. Possible functional differences of the variant between ethnic groups also need to be investigated. Wider implications of the findings: Variants in centrosomal genes appear to be important contributors to the risk of maternal aneuploidy. Functional validation of these variants will eventually allow prescreening to select patients that have better chances to benefit from preimplantation genetic testing.Peer reviewedSupplemental data: https://doi.org/doi:10.7282/t3-xq8d-ap6

Kultivacija notranje narave (xing) v Leibnizovih kitajskih spisih

The concept of inner nature (xing), a crucial part of the ideal of self-cultivation in Chinese thought, played an important role in philosophical communication between China and europe in the 17th and 18th centuries. The author differentiates between two types of attributes of the concept of nature, according to the successfulness of communication: those that adequately reached their european addressees and those that evaded the translatability of concepts. She also identifies the conceptual reasons for this selective translatability. In the process of the translation of Chinese concepts into the european framework the qualifier “rational” was added to the term “nature” (xing) by late 17th century translators. It was precisely the concept of self-cultivation, based on the inner nature (xing), translated as rational nature (natura rationalis), that provided a point of reference for the enlightenment praise of the Chinese natural morality. The morals of the Chinese were identified as proof of the sufficiency of the natural religion – and the redundancy of the religion of revelation. In the study of this problem the author thus focuses primarily on the comments on the “natural theology of the Chinese” in Leibniz’s Chinese writings, and by comparison with his other contemporary writings, analyses the hypothetical dialogicality of this concept. Based on this study the author finally shows the core foundation of the relevancy of the concept of (self)cultivation for 18th century European philosophy, Leibniz’s understanding of the Chinese concept of one’s inner nature (xing) as a condition for the possibility of epistemological and practical autonomy. V procesu prevajanja kitajskih konceptov v evropski okvir so prevajalci konca sedemnajstega stoletja naravi (xing) pridali še prilastek »razumna«. Prav koncept samokultivacije na temelju notranje narave (xing), prevedene v razumno naravo (natura rationalis), je nato predstavljal oporno točko razsvetljenskega poveličevanja kitajske naravne morale, v kateri so pisci prepoznavali dokaz zadostnosti naravne religije – in odvečnost religije razodetja.

Genus <i>Mckenzieana</i> nom. n. <p> <i>Helaspis</i> McKenzie 1963: 34 (Mandibulata: Hexapoda: Hemiptera: Diaspididae) is preoccupied by <i>Helaspis</i> Imbrie 1959: 400 (Brachiopoda: Strophomenata: Productida: Productellidae).</p> <p> <b>Type species:</b> <i>Helaspis mexicana</i> McKenzie, 1963: 34.</p> <p> <b>Remarks on nomenclatural change.</b> McKenzie (1963) established the armoured scale genus <i>Helaspis</i> with the type species <i>Helaspis mexicana</i> McKenzie 1963. The genus is a valid name in Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Diaspididae, subfamily Aspidiotinae, tribe Aspidiotini (Normark <i>et al.</i> 2019). The genus includes only the type species, recorded from Mexico.</p> <p> Unfortunately, the name <i>Helaspis</i> McKenzie 1963 is preoccupied by <i>Helaspis</i> Imbrie 1959, a fossil marine brachiopod genus (Brachiopoda: Strophomenata: Productida: family Productellidae) based on the type species <i>Helaspis luma</i> Imbrie 1959. Thus, <i>Helaspis</i> McKenzie 1963 is a junior homonym of <i>Helaspis</i> Imbrie 1959. According to Article 60 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, a new replacement name is proposed for <i>Helaspis</i> McKenzie 1963: <i>Mckenzieana</i> <b>nom. n.</b></p> <p> <b>Etymology.</b> The replacement name for the genus is derived from the name H.L. McKenzie, the author of the armoured scale insect genus <i>Helaspis</i>; gender feminine.</p>Published as part of <i>Meng, Shitao & Xing, Jichun, 2022, Replacement of names for two armoured scale genera (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha Diaspididae) due to homonymy, pp. 299-300 in Zootaxa 5116 (2)</i> on page 299, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.5116.2.7, <a href="http://zenodo.org/record/6367391">http://zenodo.org/record/6367391</a&gt
