Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

Reclamações ambientais em Aveiro, Portugal: atores, preocupações, padrão territorial e resoluções
This paper presents an environmental diagnosis based on public complaints on environmental
issues submitted to the Environmental Department of the Aveiro City Council, Portugal, between
2000 and 2005. It discusses the potential influences of these in local environmental planning
and governance. The paper has been organised into five sections. The first of these introduces
the study. The second section focuses on the conceptual approaches relating to environmental
grassroots movements, the main actors involved in these movements and the role played by
local government. It also contains a brief review of the most recent urban environmental
quality challenges in the European context together with a description of the main features of
the associated political and legal framework in Portugal. The third section describes the case
study and the methodology used. The results of the empirical study are detailed in the fourth
section. The final section critically analyses these results with emphases on the temporal
evolution of the submission of complaints, the actors involved, the local environmental problems
and their associated spatial pattern as well as the responses given by the City Council. This
information may then be used to provide a useful indicator for the perception of environmental
quality as well as a credible instrument for the visualisation and evaluation of local performance

Pragmatic Case Studies as a Source of Unity in Applied Psychology
To unify or not to unify applied psychology: that is the question. In this article we review pendulum swings in the historical efforts to answer this question—from a comprehensive, positivist, “top-down,” deductive yes between the 1930s and the early 60s, to a postmodern no since then. A rationale and proposal for a limited, “bottom-up,” inductive yes in applied psychology is then presented, employing a case-based paradigm that integrates both positivist and postmodern themes and components. This paradigm is labeled “pragmatic psychology” and, its specific use of case studies, the “Pragmatic Case Study Method” (“PCS Method”). We call for the creation of peer-reviewed journal-databases of pragmatic case studies as a foundational source of unifying applied knowledge in our discipline. As one example, the potential of the PCS Method for unifying different angles of theoretical regard is illustrated in an area of applied psychology, psychotherapy, via the case of Mrs. B. The article then turns to the broader historical and epistemological arguments for the unifying nature of the PCS Method in both applied and basic psychology.Peer reviewe

'Barbara' and 'Daniela': two cultivars for myrtle berries production
For a long time, many efforts have been done to cultivate myrtle as a possible alternative way to replace collection of berries from spontaneous sources. To promote cultivation, a research program was started in 1995, to study the genetic resources of myrtle and to select cultivars with pigmented fruits. The selection and characterisation of two cultivars 'Barbara' and 'Daniela,' are among others the outcomes of this research project. 'Barbara' can be characterised by shrub habitus, low vigour and medium-high yield. Its vegetation cycle starts in March and the plants grow until November. It shows an early bloom and early ripening of fruit and the plants are quite uniform in fruit maturation. Fruits are oval-shaped and medium-sized. They have a black-bluish peel and a white flesh with anthocyanin gradations. The number of seeds per fruit is medium-low (8.1) and the pulp/seed ratio is medium either (3.19). The cultivar can be propagation with cutting easily. 'Daniela' shows a medium-high vigour, a shrub habitus and satisfactory yield. Its vegetation cycle starts early in the season (February-March) and lasts until November. The length of its blooming period is intermediate and no reflorescence of plants occurs. Its fruits mature quite early, but the fruits are less uniform within the plant. Fruits are round, medium sized and black bluish. The number of seeds per fruit is high (13.7) and the pulp/seed ratio is medium (2.54). The propagation of plants with cuttings may be evaluated by medium aptitude

Title: Spectroscopic diagnosis of B[e] stars Author: Nela Dvořáková Department: Astronomical Institute of Charles University Supervisor: doc. Mgr. Daniela Korčáková, Ph.D. The B[e] stars is a common designation for a diverse group of stars of different types and evolutionary stages exhibiting forbidden emission lines and a strong infrared excess. We focus on the most mysterious group, called the FS CMa stars. These stars have the potential to help us understand the formation of strong magnetic fields in stars. The most recent and the most likely scenario explaining the nature of at least some of the FS CMa stars has to do with the chaotic process of stellar mergers. This process itself is not yet well known, however, the FS CMa group potentially contain a whole evolutionary sequence of mergers. Apart from the B[e] features or the multiperiodic behaviour, observed in spectroscopy as well as photometry, one needs to account for the strong magnetic field found in the FS CMa star IRAS 17449+2320 (Korčáková et al., 2022). This is what led to the first magneto-hydrodynamic simulations of the matter accretion onto a post-merger (Moranchel-Basurto et al., 2023, 2024). Tím nejnovějším a zároveň nepravděpodobnějším vysvětlením pro původ některých FS CMa hvězd je chaotický proces splynutí dvou hvězd neboli mergeru. Samotný proces není ještě dobře známý, avšak, mezi FS CMa hvězdami se možná skrývá celá vývojová posloupnost takových mergerů. Kromě spektrálních charakteristik, typických pro B[e] hvězdy, a multiperiodicity, která se pozoruje, jak ve spektroskopii, tak ve fotometrii, je třeba vzít v úvahu silné magnetické pole objevené u FS CMa hvězdy IRAS 17449+2320 (Korčáková a kol., 2022).
