Immigrant/Learner, Affiliate, Author, Expert: The Intersections of L2 Writing, Identity, and Computer-Mediated Communication
As technology continues to shape our interactions in both personal and educational contexts, the exploration of how computer-mediated communication (CMC) may impact the development of second language writing skills has received greater interest. While a growing body of research has investigated potential applications of this technology within second language (L2) classrooms, the voluntary writing practices of L2 writers—where and what they choose to write outside of academic domains—are relatively uncharted as yet. This review of the literature seeks to identify the many CMC contexts in which L2 writers situate themselves, their purposes for engaging these online audiences, and the social roles or identities that emerge through their chosen writing activities. Previous studies indicate that social media platforms and other online communities indeed promote learners’ experimentation with identity, group membership, and language with apparent gains in writer confidence and motivation; however, establishing a clear link between CMC and literacy development, as well as determining how computer-based writing can be meaningfully integrated into academic settings, remain directions for future research

The fresco decoration by Felix Anton Scheffler in the church St. George and St. Martin in Martínkovice
This bachelor thesis focuses on the fresco decoration in the Church of St. George and St. Martin in Martínkovice, which was created by Felix Anton Scheffler in 1748. Firstly, the thesis deals with history and typology of the church, followed by the description of works by the architect Martin Allio. The greatest part of the thesis is devoted to the painter Felix Anton Scheffler and his works reaching from Silesia to Bohemia. The author mentions Felix Anton Scheffler´s teachers - Cosmas Damian Asam and Johann Christoph Grooth. The main part of the thesis is focused on frescos which are subject to an iconographic and formal analysis and also focuses on restoration work. Scheffler´s works are put into the context of baroque paintings in Bohemia. The last part concentrates on searching patterns that are used in the fresco in the Church of St. George and St. Martin in Martínkovice. The author compares frescos from Martínkovice with Asam´s other works from the period between 1720 and 1725
Tradurre la letteratura per l'infanzia: proposta di traduzione di Flip Flap Safari di Axel Scheffler
This thesis is a proposed translation of the picture book Flip Flap Safari, written by the German author Axel Scheffler and published in 2014. The translation is presented along with an analysis and a commentary in which I analyse and examine the main translation problems of this kind of literature. and I explain the reasons behind my solutions.
The translation of a picture book is a creative challenge because it requires translator to use their linguistic and cultural skills together with their imagination and to evaluate the phonetic dimension of the source text and reproduce in the target language.
In the first part of my thesis I will introduce an overview of children’s literature in Italy and I will then focus on Flip Flap Safari, analysing the text and providing biographical information about its author-illustrator Axel Scheffler. In the second part of my thesis I will present my translation of the book, which will be followed by a reflection about the main problems I had to face during the translation process
The Dynamism of Health Law: Expanded Insurance Coverage as the Engine of Regulatory Reform
Author(s): Scheffler, Gabriel | Abstract: Can law improve the delivery of health care? The predominant view is that law serves as a barrier to reforming the health care delivery system. Health law scholars of all stripes blame regulations for impeding innovation, limiting competition, and exacerbating fragmentation in health care. I argue that this view neglects an important—but overlooked—feature of health law: the dynamic relationship between laws that expand health insurance coverage and laws that regulate the delivery of health care. By expanding health insurance coverage and increasing the demand for health care, laws such as Medicare, Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act catalyze policymakers to experiment with reforms to delivery system regulations over time. I chart the evolution of three key areas of delivery system law, and find that insurance expansions have contributed to dramatic changes in each of these areas. Recognizing health law’s “dynamism” sheds light on two debates that are central to health care reform. First, contrary to what some scholars have argued, it reveals that expanding health insurance coverage should be viewed as a catalyst for delivery system reform, rather than being in competition with it. Second, it strengthens the case for further expanding health insurance coverage. I argue that a dynamic regulatory system is better able to address problems of access, costs, and quality; to adapt to other changes in the underlying health care system; and to facilitate policy learning
Humour and the locus of control in The Gruffalo (Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler)
The purpose of this article is firstly to distinguish between the notions “external locus of control” and “internal locus of control”, secondly to indicate ways in which the locus of control in humour in “The Gruffalo” by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler can be identified and thirdly to indicate possible ways in which emphasis on the internal locus of control in the young reader can assist him/her in the development of a general mental/- psychological well-being.
Different kinds of literary humour contribute to the ways in which young listeners/readers can identify with stories, poems, dramas and films. The young listener/reader can recognise him/herself in humorous situations, in the humorous use of imagery, wordplay and illustrations/visuals. He/she can also identify with or distance him-/herself from or reject the characters, the values represented and the author who created the text.
When in interaction with the works of authors who use negative as well as positive kinds of humour to point out the dos and don’ts, the rights and the wrongs in life, the horizon of a young listener’s/reader’s experience can be expanded. Such a reading would contribute to the development of the young reader’s cognitive, emotional, social and moral values as it links up with an unconscious or conscious decision about the locus of control in his/her life
Estimating selection pressures on HIV-1 using phylogenetic likelihood models
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) can rapidly evolve due to selection pressures exerted by HIV-specific immune responses, antiviral agents, and to allow the virus to establish infection in different compartments in the body. Statistical models applied to HIV-1 sequence data can help to elucidate the nature of these selection pressures through comparisons of non-synonymous (or amino acid changing) and synonymous (or amino acid preserving) substitution rates. These models also need to take into account the non-independence of sequences due to their shared evolutionary history. We review how we have developed these methods and have applied them to characterize the evolution of HIV-1 in vivo. To illustrate our methods, we present an analysis of compartment-specific evolution of HIV-1 em) in blood and cerebrospinal fluid and of site-to-site variation in the gag gene of subtype C HIV-1. Manufacturing of hybrid aluminum copper joints by electromagnetic pulse welding – Identification of quantitative process windows
Art. 110001, 6 S.Compared to conventional joining techniques, electromagnetic pulse welding offers important advantages especially when it comes to dissimilar material connections as e.g. copper aluminum welds. However, due to missing guidelines and tools for process design, the process has not been widely implemented in industrial production, yet. In order to contribute to overcoming this obstacle, a combined numerical and experimental process analysis for electromagnetic pulse welding of Cu-DHP and EN AW-1050 was carried out and the results were consolidated in a quantitative collision parameter based process window
Roman-Punktir. Indirektes Erzählen durch Leerstellen in Jurij Trifonovs Roman "Zeit und Ort"
Jurij Trifonov's last great novel "Vremja i mesta", understood by the author to be his most important work, outlines in the experience of epic figures a contemporary historical period: Moscow, in the period from August 1937 to early 1980. Trifonov saw it as the most important task of literature as well as his personally most important task as a writer, "to represent the phenomenon of life and the phenomenon of time".Jurij Trifonovs letzter großer Roman "Vremja i mesta", vom Autor selbst als sein bedeutendstes Werk verstanden, skizziert im Erleben epischer Figuren eine zeitgeschichtliche Epoche: Moskau, in der Zeit vom August 1937 bis Anfang 1980. Trifonov sah es als die wichtigste Aufgabe der Literatur wie auch als seine persönlich wichtigste Aufgabe als Schriftsteller an, "das Phänomen Leben und das Phänomen Zeit darzustellen"
Which Features Matter How Much When?
AbstractHow do brains learn which features matter how much, when and for what purposes? A specific feature may matter more or less for recognitions of different learned patterns, and in different contexts and attentional foci. Simple executable “neural circuits” built from biologically-inspired reusable memory pattern components in the NeurOS™ and NeuroBlocks™ technology11patents pending; see www.cognitivity.technology model and implement a range of learning and dynamic contextual/situational/attentional feature relevance. A pattern is a collection of weighted features, roughly analogous to a neuron or neuron assembly. New patterns are created for sufficiently novel feature combinations. Individual feature weights in best-matching existing patterns grow or diminish with repetition, yielding patterns that adjust to repeated experience. Arbitrarily complex classification meshes typical of human knowledge are easily assembled by varying a simple novelty parameter. Cascading pattern recognitions build up layers of concrete to abstract feature vocabularies. Names or labels are modeled as synonyms for experience patterns. Context can be modeled as yet another feature, derived from recent activity, to discriminate among otherwise similar patterns. Attention can be modeled as broad dynamic parameters modulating feature signal strengths
