The public sphere in the new Media age

    No full text
Peter Dahlgren sets out to describe the public sphere in the new media age, his first step being to critically examine the model evolved by Habermas. This brings him to question the presupposition of an ideal 18th century public sphere, surely more appropriately considered as a normative utopia. Were this model enlarged to include the mass of empirical knowledge acquired since the 1950's, as the author suggests, then, without totally eliminating the philosophers doubts, it would be possible to advance beyond the core concept of a decadent public sphere.
