It can be seen that prison theme is mostly used by the authors who are sentenced to short or long term punishments for political reasons in Turkish literature. Orhan Kemal, Kemal Tahir, Kerim Korcan, Çetin Altan, Nihal Atsız, Erdal Öz, Rıfat Ilgaz, Abdülkadir Billurcu, Remzi Çayır, Sevgi Soysal, Feride Çiçekoğlu are some examples of the Turkish authors who carried their experiences in this harsh environment to their literary works. Füruzan and Canan Tan differ from other writers who used prison theme in their novels by not knowing this place by a consequence of legal punishment. In her novel 47’liler, Füruzan tells the story of the women who lives in this place which she herself did not live. Yet, she scrutinizes the relationship between woman and prison in 12 Mart era instead of focusing to prison. One of the bestselling writers of our time and the author of novel Kelepçe which is subject of our study, Canan Tan, set foot in prison not as a prisoner but as an observer with the purpose of gathering material for her novel. In this paper, the novel Kelepçe, which is written by Canan Tan and published in April 2016, will be reviewed and its portrayal of psychological – sociological background of crime will be examined. Kelepçe presents a view to the life of the women inmates, and also narrates the process which ends up with stigmatizing of them in public opinion

    No full text
Multifunctional sensing capability, ‘unusual’ formats with flexible/stretchable designs, rugged lightweight construction, and self-powered operation are desired attributes for electronics that directly interface with the human body. The collective results in this dissertation suggest utility in a variety of sensors and energy harvesting components, with lightweight construction, attractive mechanical properties and potential for implementation over large areas, with promising application in unusual bio-integrated electronics, such as self-powered cardiac pacemakers, skin-mounted blood pressure sensors, modulus sensors and skin cancer detection bio-patches. For these and related applications, unusual electronics provide the capability of intimate and conformal integration with a variety of substrates on biological tissues. These systems can be twisted, folded, stretched/flexed and wrapped onto curviliniar surfaces without damage or significant alteration in operation. In this dissertation, the application of ferroelectric/piezoelectric materials and patterning techniques for ‘unusual’ electronics, with an emphasis on bio-integrated systems were demonstrated. Overall, the results suggest that the various sensor capabilities could be valuable for a range of applications in continuous self-powered health/wellness monitoring and clinical medicine.Item withdrawn by Mark Zulauf ([email protected]) on 2014-12-01T14:42:54Z Item was in collections: University of Illinois Theses & Dissertations (ID: 1) No. of bitstreams: 1 Dagdeviren_Canan.pdf: 13101093 bytes, checksum: 1ff904b8a9fc06cb3bd1aa2b12411180 (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2015-01-21T19:59:05Z (GMT). Measured Output Voltages of Piezoelectric Devices Depend on the Resistance of Voltmeter

    No full text
Piezoelectric mechanical energy harvester (MEH) has been developed as an important emerging variant of piezoelectric devices. Experiments in the literature show that the voltage-time curves of piezoelectric devices encompass both positive and negative characteristics even though the strain in the piezoelectric material is always positive during the applied cycling load. This does not agree with the results predicted by the piezoelectric theory of open circuit. Here, both the experiments and theory are performed to understand this important problem. A zirconate titanate (PZT) MEH is fabricated and the output voltages are recorded with three voltmeters. It is found that the measured voltages depend on the resistance of voltmeter. The peak value of voltage increases with the increase of the resistance of voltmeter, which is contrary to the established knowledge that the measurement results are independent of the instruments used. A theoretical model considering the voltmeter with finite resistance is established. The charge is allowed to go through the voltmeter and switch the directions during increasing and releasing of strain. The results by this model agree well with those from the experiments. The findings suggest that the resistance of voltmeter should be reported for voltage measurement of the piezoelectric devices.Piezoelectric mechanical energy harvester (MEH) has been developed as an important emerging variant of piezoelectric devices. Literary works, depending on the content of individual or social issues can reach a wider audience. In a novel, poetry or essay, the matter in hand can change the prejudices and existing perceptions by creating awareness in the reader. In the same way, it can help the reader to obtain prior knowledge in a subject that he/she has no idea about before. The literary works referring to social problems rather than individual issues are also a sociological document. Issues that are subject to works can either directly or indirectly affect a significant part of society. In this context, novels with broad expression have covered many issues ranging from children's rights to exile in both Turkish literature and world literature. Canan Tan, with her novels published in the 2000s and after, puts some ongoing social problems on her agenda. Various issues are addressed in the novels written by the author, employing her own experiences and observations. Piraye and Pembe and Yusuf draw attention as the novels in which elements of morals were intensely discussed. In this study, it is examined how the ceremonies were performed in Canan Tan's Piraye and Pembe and Yusuf novels and the concerns of the people who are effective in these practices. Negative examples are emphasized more and how some of these morals caused the people to suffer is explained by means of the texts

Determination of the Objective Reason Condition in the Conclusion and Renewal of Fixed Term Employment Contracts

    No full text
An employment contract may be executed for a fixed or indefinite term. An indefinite-term employment contract is the rule of thumb, whereas a fixed-term contract is an exception. According to Article 11 of the Employment Code No 4857, a fixed-term contract may be signed when it is based on an objective reason, such as fixed-term work, the completion of a certain job, or the emergence of a relevant fact. There is no similar provision in other employment codes, which is why concluding a fixed-term employment contract with a worker covered by the Employment Code is more difficult than terminating workers excluded from the said code. This strict structure to conclude a fixed-term employment contract of the Employment Code has been criticized by the doctrine. According to Article 11, paragraphs 2 and 3, of the Employment Code and Article 430 of the Obligation Code No. 6098, to renew a fixed-term employment contract with all workers, an objective reason is required. This article explains what objective reason means and if such a condition is suitable and evaluates the debates in the doctrine and legal studies regarding the objective reason condition in the conclusion of fixed-term employment contracts, regulated in Article 11 of the Employment Code. Further, the author discusses whether an exception should be introduced into the objective cause condition. This article next examines the objective reason condition for the renewal of fixed-term employment contracts. In this framework, in addition to the objective reason condition, the application of a time limit and a number limit will be evaluated to prevent abuse in the renewal of employment contracts by using successive fixed-term employment agreements

    No full text
In this study, we examined a mathematics teacher’s communicative acts on an instant messaging tool, WhatsApp, and its role in creating a sustained learning environment between secondary-school students and a teacher in Turkey. The interactions of a mathematics teacher and his students (n = 38) over two years were explored. The WhatsApp group increased interaction in out-of-school hours. Analysis of the teacher’s communicative acts was the leading force that encouraged the group to continue to interact. The teacher portrayed an informal and sincere presentation of himself on social media. A constructive communication style between teacher and students was fostered by connecting through WhatsApp in out-of-school hours, when the teacher’s informal communicative acts have facilitated their learning. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V
