Advisors: John Mowitt, Shaden Tageldin. 1 computer file (PDF); viii, 293 pages.In Non-Aligned Features: The Coincidence of Modernity and the Screen in Indonesia, I deploy extensive archival, ethnographic, and participatory research on Indonesian mass media as a critical intervention in the study of cinema. Examining Indonesian cinema from independence in 1949 until the present, I focus in particular on complicating understandings of how Western technologies, techniques and ideas have functioned as catalysts or determinants for the development of both nationalism and national cinemas worldwide. I examine local cinematic canons that bear the imprint of centuries of engagement with various transnational networks and forces. In the view that emerges, the pervasive politics of left-right alignment specific to the Cold War appear radically shifted – not simply, however, to a place “between” the binary poles of the United States and the Soviet Union, or within the triad of classical, oppositional, and Third cinemas that articulate their struggle as an epic of superpowers. Instead, following many of the Indonesian cineastes and critics I study, I endeavor to open the reading, viewing, present to an older domain of aesthetics and commodity exchange in which the linear arrangement of events leading to and from the rise of capitalism in Europe is made to coincide with other probable causes of the modern. In this regard, I engage in particular with the discourses and modes of address of Javanese wayang – the conceptual-textual center of shadow play and a critical platform for Indonesian art, politics and historiography, whose narratives and screens are always positioned to “coincide” with the present state of affairs. Far from buried or brushed aside in contemporary geopolitics, I argue that the methods and perspectives underpinning media like wayang continue to act as filters that critically influence the circulation and absorption of aesthetic and political ideas. The lineage of cinema’s development in Indonesia thus defined a form and sphere of influence neither here nor there, then nor now in the broadest terms of film theory and practice.Yngvesson, Dag. No full textAbstract Author: Josefin Almkvist and Ellenor Yngvesson Title: The battle for children – A qualitative study of the district court's assessment in custody disputes (translated title) Supervisor: Maria Bangura Arvidsson Assessor: Hans-Edvard Roos The purpose of this study was to analyze verdicts of custody disputes and thereby study how the court motivates their decisions in custody issues. The study also aims to examine how the parent’s gender influences the custody’s decision. More specifically we looked at how the district court's assessment looks like in sole and joint custody and whether there is any difference between cases where the court rules for the mother or father. This was done by studying 30 district court verdicts from Malmö Tingsrätt between 2007 and 2011 in which parents did not agree on custody. The studied verdicts were analyzed through a coding procedure to obtain a result. The analysis draws from theories on family and gender which are applied to our findings in an attempt to further put light on the issue of how the court decides in custody disputes. The study showed that there are many factors in custody disputes that are important and affects the district court's assessment of the custody issue. Each individual dispute has its own unique context and it is therefore difficult to make any generalization of what is required to enable the district court judge for sole or joint custody. Even though no single factor was found to be particularly crucial in the dispute, we have found some patterns in how the district court reasons. Factors that often have a decisive importance are parental suitability, parents' ability to cooperate and the child's right to both parents
Mentoring in the Academy Between Academic Mothers
No full textBeing a working mother in academia is difficult, creating tensions between the personal and professional spheres. With numerous conflicts to navigate, surviving becomes a lived reality for many. In this chapter, the authors reflect on the circles of mentoring between them to help navigate the tension-filled spaces in the academy, including traditional and hierarchical norms. Using Schwab’s flights from the field, the authors engage in six reflective states to reveal the importance of care and compassion that transcends countries, cultures and contexts to provide hope (and solidarity). Engaged in auto-ethnographic reflections, the authors build a shared understanding about what is important in their working lives as academic mothers and what are the key skills learnt from each other through mentoring. © The Author(s) 2020
