Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Vi har to statlige tilsyn som skal jobbe etter samme overordnede forutsetninger, hvorfor er det så betydelige forskjeller mellom dem?
Til grunn for denne problemstillingens hensikt ligger St. Meld. nr.17 «Om statlige tilsyn» (St. meld. nr. 17 (2002-2003)), som blant annet setter en forventing til statlige tilsyn om at disse skal levere en tilnærming som er gjenkjennbar og som sørger for at næringen som kontrolleres holder seg innenfor lov og forskriftskrav.
For å kunne besvare problemstillingen utformet vi to forskningsspørsmål:
Hypotese 1: Petroleumstilsynet har bedre rammevilkår enn Helsetilsynet og har fokus på dialog og samarbeid med tilsynsobjektene.
Hypotese 2: Helsetilsynet har dårligere rammevilkår enn Petroleumstilsynet og har fokus på kontroll og straff i oppfølging av tilsynsobjektene.
Undersøkelsen ble utført ved hjelp av kvalitativ metode. Vi valgte å gjøre en case-studie, med en «mest ulike case» tilnærming.
For Petroleumstilsynet underbygger funnene i denne undersøkelsen vår første hypotese. Vi finner et tilsyn som gjennom våre undersøkelser har de rammevilkårene de behøver for å utføre sin tilsynsrolle. Vi finner også strukturer og arenaer for samarbeid med næringen, samt en kultur der samarbeid med næringen er viktig.
For Statens helsetilsyn var vi av en oppfatning at vi ville finne andre rammevilkår og en annen kultur for oppfølging av deres tilsynsobjekter. Våre funn viser en utvikling i Statens helsetilsyn som har beveget seg bort fra vår hypotese for dem og mot hypotesen vi har for Petroleumstilsynet.
Våre funn viser at de økonomiske rammene for Statens helsetilsyn er mindre enn for Petroleumstilsynet, både totalt og beregnet per ansatt. Samtidig tolker vi funnene våre i den retning at også Statens helsetilsyn fokuserer på læring og dialog i mye større grad enn å finne syndere som skal straffes.
Vi finner et Petroleumstilsyn som er i tråd med vår hypotese. Vi finner derimot ikke et Statens helsetilsyn som er i tråd med vår hypotese, da fokuset på læring, utvikling og dialog er mer utpreget enn vi trodde.The purpose of this study has been to take a closer look at the issue:
We have two national supervision bodies which are supposed to work according to the same overall prerequisites, why are there such significant differences between them?
The purpose of this issue is based on a Report to the Parliament: St. Meld. nr.17 (St. meld. nr. 17 (2002-2003)) “On State Supervision Authorities”, which places an expectation on the Supervision Bodies, that they must have an approach which is recognizable and that ensures that the industry being audited stays within regulatory requirements.
In order to be able to answer this, we developed two research questions:
Hypothesis 1:
The Petroleum Safety Authority has better framework conditions than the Norwegian Board of Health Supervision and focuses on dialogue and cooperation with the organizations being audited.
Hypothesis 2:
The Norwegian Board of Health Supervision has worse framework conditions than the Petroleum Safety Authority and focuses on control and punishment in the follow-up of the organizations being audited.
The survey was conducted using a qualitative method. We chose to do a case study, with a “most different case” approach.
For the Petroleum Safety Authority, the findings in this study support our first hypothesis. We find that this governmental authority, through our study, has the framework conditions they need to carry out their supervisory role. We also find structures and arenas for cooperation with the industry, as well as a culture where cooperation with the industry is important.
For the Norwegian Board of Health Supervision, we were of the opinion that we would find different framework conditions and a different culture for the follow-up of organizations being audited. Our findings show that the governmental authority has moved away from our first hypothesis for them and towards the hypothesis we have for the Petroleum Safety Authority.
Our findings show that the financial framework for the Board of Health Supervision is smaller than that for the Petroleum Safety Authority, both in total and calculated per employee. At the same time, we interpret our findings in the direction that the Board of Health Supervision also focuses on learning and dialogue to a much greater extent than on finding culprits to be punished.
We find a Petroleum Safety Authority that is in line with our hypothesis. However, we do not find a Board of Health Supervision that is in line with our hypothesis, as the focus on learning, development and dialogue is more pronounced than we thought

Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
