Metrological Performance of Traffic Detection Systems”, IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement

    No full text
All of the more advanced traffic management techniques base their efficiency on reliable traffic detection systems. In a very important and emerging field, where the technical solutions proposed to measure and collect traffic primary data are not few, a unique methodology to evaluate and compare their performance still misses. In this paper, the problem of the metrological characterization of traffic detection systems is widely treated, founding inspiration on the ISO Guide to Uncertainty in Measurement. Experimental results are reported to demonstrate the applicability of the suggested procedure to some commercial instruments

A vision system for the online quality monitoring of industrial manufacturing

The design of an image based measurement system for the online inspection of electromechanical parts is described. A two-camera architecture is introduced in order to highlight all the required details involved in the measurements. The design takes into account both the interfacing and the real-time issues that assure an effective online operation. The description of the measurement system and the corresponding installation on the production line points out a methodological approach to the design of these kinds of measurement systems. The paper provides details about the algorithms for the localization and the measurement of the required quantities, as well as the calibration procedure and the error correction. Experimental tests for the performance evaluation are presented and discussed in terms of timing and accuracy

Machine vision systems for on line quality monitoring in industrial applications

This paper is concerned with the topic of non-contact measurements for industrial applications. It presents the case of vision-based systems realized by the authors expressly for the measurement of geometric and/or chromatic parameters of rubber profiles for the automotive industry. After a brief description of the extrusion process, a stereo vision system for the on-line measurement of the dimensional characteristics of the profile transversal section is first described in all its main components and features, then two modules for the inspection of the finish of profile surfaces are presented. © 2014 IMEKO

Multi-exposure imaging for measurements in rubber production

    No full text
In the paper, the application of high dynamic range and exposure fusion techniques to image-based measurement systems is described. The advantages of such techniques are discussed, and their performances are compared to the original high-contrast images and between them. Results will show the improvements of measurement reliability achieved with the technique presented in the case of length measurements of industrial products characterized by different surface reflectance

A New Calibration Procedure for 3-D Shape Measurement System Based on Phase-Shifting Projected Fringe Profilometry

An original procedure is presented for the calibration of fringe-projection-based 3-D vision systems. The proposed approach estimates both the phase-to-depth and transverse relationships by directly measuring the phase maps for only three planes placed within the calibration volume and then estimating the phase maps for a number of other ldquovirtual planes.rdquo Experimental tests conducted on a fringe projection system show the effectiveness of the proposed procedure
