THE ROLE OF DNA AS SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

    No full text
Criminal trial has recently been focusing on scientific evidence: in particular, DNA evidence ensures reliable results. Peculiarities of this evidence cause a discussion in the search for a balance between individual guarantees and efficiency of criminal justice. This is regulated by Italian Law 85/2009, following the Treaty of Prüm. There are four main critical aspects related to this legislation. 1) Coercive nature of the DNA sample. 2) Individuals whose DNA samples are taken from. 3) Privacy. 4) Reopening of the trial after definitive judgment

The neural bases of vitality forms

Unlike emotions, which are short-lasting events accompanied by viscero-motor responses, vitality forms are continuous internal states that modulate the motor behaviors of individuals and are devoid of the autonomic modifications that characterize real emotions. Despite the importance of vitality forms in social life, only recently have neurophysiological studies been devoted to this issue. The first part of this review describes fMRI experiments, showing that the dorso-central insula is activated during the execution, the perception and the imagination of arm actions endowed with different vitality forms as well as during the hearing and the production of speech conveying vitality forms. In the second part, we address the means by which the dorso-central insula modulates the networks for controlling action execution and how the sensory and interoceptive information is conveyed to this insular sector. Finally, we present behavioral data showing the importance of vitality forms in social interactions

Left on the right or viceversa. On a case of “alternating” allochiria

We describe a patient with an ischemic right frontal lesion and mild left neglect who showed a systematic tendency to transpose drawings on one side of the page, which varied depending on the starting point (left or right) of his graphic productions. When not specifically cued, the patient started to draw in the ipsilesional (right) side and tended to show allochiria on the right, but occasionally, or under specific instructions, the patient started drawing from the left side and then showed a complete reversion of his spatial transpositions. To clarify the basic mechanisms underlying such a peculiar constructional phenomenon, we performed a series of experimental investigations, including extended copying tasks, a clock-marking test (to mark the position of single hours on a clock-face), and a line bisection task with progressive left-toright or right-to-left stimulus presentation. Findings suggested that “alternating” allochiria in copying and drawing from memory tasks is an epiphenomenon of a basic inability to move attention and action away from the starting point of graphic productions. The present case study, contrasted with observations on other brain-damaged patients, demonstrates that allochiria may have different neuro-cognitive bases and offers new insights for theoretical interpretations of unilateral spatial neglect

La ceramica italiota a figure rosse in Daunia: temi e problemi

Recent research on South Italian red-figure pottery raises the need to overcome the almost exclusive stylistic rather than typological seriation of this class of materials. If classification by attribution is inevitable for vases in which the figurative decoration is, together with the shape, a fundamental part of the objects’ function, it’s now important both to submit the attributions themselves to revision and to consider the contribution which can be provided, in understanding production and reception mechanisms, by other approaches, such as morphological and contextual analysis. Daunia represents a privileged territory for investigating, through the examination of the 'first steps' of the local productive experience, on a framework of organization and mobility of artisan work very complex and correlated to the 'market' of the manufactured articles themselves, as emerges from multiple perspectives. An exemplary sample is, in this perspective, the activity of the Lampas Group, whose peculiar appearance, starting from the morphology of the vases, returns, together with an overview of provenances and known contexts, a very interesting insight into these dynamics
