A model for term selection in text categorization problems
No full textIn the last ten years, automatic Text Categorization (TC) has been gaining an increasing interest from the research community, due to the need to organize a massive number of digital documents. Following a machine learning paradigm, this paper presents a model which regards TC as a classification task supported by a wrapper approach and combines the utilization of a Genetic Algorithm (GA) with a filter. First, a filter is used to weigh the relevance of terms in documents. Then, the top-ranked terms are grouped in several nested sets of relatively small size. These sets are explored by a GA which extracts the subset of terms that best categorize documents. Experimental results on the Reuters-21578 dataset state the effectiveness of the proposed model and its competitiveness with the learning approaches proposed in the TC literature
A Fully Semantic Approach to Large Scale Text Categorization.
No full textText categorization is usually performed by supervised algorithms on the large amount of hand-labelled documents which are labor-intensive and often not available. To avoid this drawback, this paper proposes a text categorization approach that is designed to fully exploiting semantic resources. It employs the ontological knowledge not only as lexical support for disambiguating terms and deriving their sense inventory, but also to classify documents in topic categories. Specifically, our work relates to apply two corpus-based thesauri (i.e. WordNet and WordNet Domains) for selecting the correct sense of words in a document while utilizing domain names for classification purposes. Experiments presented show how our approach performs well in classifying a large corpus of documents. Exploring the relatedness of gene sets
No full textA key activity for life scientists is the exploration of the relatedness of a set of genes in order to differentiate genes performing coherently related functions from random grouped genes. This paper considers exploring the relatedness within two popular bio-organizations, namely gene families and pathways. This exploration is carried out by integrating different resources (ontologies, texts, expert classifications) and aims to suggest patterns that facilitate the biologists in obtaining a more comprehensive vision of differences in gene behaviour. Our approach is based on the annotation of a specialized corpus of texts (the gene summaries) that condense the description of functions/processes in which genes are involved. By annotating these summaries with different ontologies a set of descriptor terms is derived and compared in order to obtain a measure of relatedness within the bio-organizations we considered. Finally, the most important annotations within each family are extracted using a text categorization method

A Human Rights Approach to Environmental Health
No full textThis chapter explores the interface between health and the environment through the human rights prism, focusing on the environmental dimension of the right to health and on the now widely recognized right to a healthy, safe and clean environment. To this end, the chapter intends to offers a comprehensive analysis of the relevant provisions contained in human rights treaties and the obligations stemming therefrom. The review of these legal sources is completed by a critical assessment of the case law produced by regional human rights bodies and their evolutive interpretation of individual rights and corresponding State obligations in this field, with a special focus on the case law of the European Court of Human Rights. The aim of this legal analysis is to evaluate the added value of a human rights approach to environmental health litigation, with a view to best achieving the overarching goal of public health protection from environmental harm. The author highlights that human rights can be used in court as effective tools to protect public health against the adverse effects of environmental degradation and severe pollution. She also stresses that the potential of human rights bodies in the field of environmental health is yet fully unexpressed, but further positive developments towards the protection of collective and intergenerational rights related to the environment and human health can be achieved thanks to the dynamic and evolutive approach adopted by these bodies and through the virtuous circle created by judicial cross-fertilization
A Multitude of Women: The Challenges of the Contemporary Italian Novel
No full textA Multitude of Women looks at the ways in which both Italian literary tradition and external influences have assisted Italian women writers in rethinking the theoretical and aesthetic ties between author, text, and readership in the construction of the novel. Stefania Lucamante discusses the valuable contributions that Italian women writers have made to the contemporary novel and illustrates the relevance of the novelistic examples set by their predecessors. She addresses various discursive communities, reading works by Di Lascia, Ferrante, Vinci, and others with reference to intertextuality and the theories of Elsa Morante and Simone de Beauvoir.
This study identifies a positive deviation from literary and ideological orthodoxy, a deviation that helps give meaning to the Italian novel and to transform the traditional notion of the canon in Italian literature. Lucamante argues that this is partly due to the merits of women writers and their ability to eschew obsolete patterns in narrative while favoring forms that are more attuned to the ever-changing needs of society. She shows that contemporary novels by women authors mirror a shift from previous trends in which the need for female emancipation interfered with the actual literary and aesthetic significance of the novel. A Multitude of Women offers a new epistemology of the novel and will appeal to those interested in women's writing, readership, Italian studies, and literary studies in general

the following nursing schools: University School of Nursing and Midwifery (1946-1951), Public School of Nursing and Midwifery (1949-1951), Public School Of Nursing (1950-1964), Public Medical School of Nursing (1964-1971), Department of Nursing of the Medical Vocational
College No 1 (1971-1981), and Anna Rydlówna Department of Nursing of the Medical Vocational College No 1 (1982-2001). The
school was localised in Cracow, 25 Kopernika St. until 1975, and then was moved to a new location - 12 Michałowskiego St. The aim of the study was the recollection of Stefania Poznańska, PhD, a nurse, teacher, tutor of nursing, author of multiple research studies
and publications, a person dedicated to the development of modern nursing, and last but not least, a great fiend.
The study material is based on a review of personal notes and archive materials gathered by the Institute of Nursing and Midwifery,
Faculty of Health Sciences, Medical Collage, Jagiellonian University in Cracow. Also, personal recollections of multiple encounters
with Stefania Poznańska were taken into account. A biography-historical method as well as the review of documents were applied by
the authors. A significant contribution of Stefania Poznańska to the development of modern nursing must be emphasized. This contribution included her
work for the Programme Committee in Cracow for nursing education curriculum at university level as well as specific detailed programs regarding nursing history and ethical issues in nursing care, and the publication of a series of articles on new concept for teaching nursing
profession. Stefania Poznańska was a person open to another human being
