Get PDFIn this editorial we report on a workshop of editors of educational technology and open and distance education journals held in Barcelona, Spain in June of this year, attended by Barney Dalgarno on behalf of the AJET editorial team. Some of the key issues discussed during the workshop included editorial processes, author services, sustainability of business models, and emerging impact metrics. Overall the workshop was a valuable opportunity to compare the processes used by AJET with those used by other journals. An online network of participating editors has now been established and a commitment has been made to come together for similar events in the future
I remember summertime
No full textIn this "I remember" memoir, Barney Sasaki recalls games that Seabrook children would play on hot, muggy summer nights. Although they played games that were similar to those played by children elsewhere, Barney claims that Seabrook kids added rules that made the games unique to Seabrook. Barney also remembers these games as being the only sports that boys and girls could play together without being on separate teams. The Seabrook Educational and Cultural Center has been soliciting current and past residents of Seabrook Farms for an "I remember" project. Residents are asked to create narratives regarding their experiences at Seabrook Farms. These memories help preserve the history and multi-cultural heritage of Seabrook Farms

VirtualPREX: Providing virtual professional experience for pre-service teachers
No full textProfessional experience (or practicum) is problematic within teacher education courses because preparation for, and the quality of , placements can be inconsistent. Pre-service teachers can commence their first placement without some of the requisite skills and off-campus pre-service teachers do not always have opportunities to practise any skills at all pre-placement. VirtualPREX is an innovative approach to professional experience preparation, providing opportunities for practice in a virtual world such as Second Life. In the chapter the authors outline the rationale for this innovation and then report on the data from the pilot trials of the VirtualPREX role plays where pre-service teachers role-played the teacher and students in a Second Life virtual classroom. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the next steps in the project

Despite his wide-ranging experience and endless sacrifices, Lewis Barney was a worker in the Mormon vineyard, not one of the princes of the Kingdom of God whose lives have been so exhaustively celebrated. Building an Instructional Design Model for Immersive Virtual Reality Learning Environments
No full textThe recent increase in affordability of immersive virtual reality learning environments (IVRLEs) grows the interests of university, school, and industry training contexts. Due to their unique affordances, these environments have the potential to lead to a paradigm shift in learning experience design. The absence of learning design models, however, represents a significant challenge to the widespread and effective utilisation of this technology platform. Several researchers have proposed design models for virtual reality learning environments (VRLEs). The majority of these models don't explicitly consider the unique characteristics of Immersive environments. This research describes an instructional design model for IVRLEs, which draws upon Dalgarno and Lee's affordance model for VRLE and Tacgin's IVRLE development stages for teaching concepts and procedures. The specific learning strategies and affordances of IVRLEs are matched with the features of current IVR systems and technologies.</p
