Does Beta React to Market Conditions? Estimates of Bull and Bear Betas using a Nonlinear Market Model with an Endogenous Threshold Parameter

    No full text
We apply a logistic smooth transition market model (LSTM) to a sample of returns on Australian industry portfolios to investigate whether bull and bear market betas differ. Unlike other studies, our LSTM model allows for smooth transition between bull and bear states and allows the data to determine the threshold value. The estimated value of the smoothness parameter was very large for all industries implying that transition is abrupt. Therefore we estimated the threshold as a parameter along with the two betas in a dual beta market (DBM) framework using a sequential conditional least squares (SCLS) method. Using Lagrange Multiplier type tests of linearity, and the SCLS method our results indicate that for all but two industries the bull and bear betas are significantly different.Logistic Smooth Transition Market Model (LSTM); Sequential Conditional Least Squares (SCLS); Linearity Tests; Bull/Bear Betas

Gate level optimisation of primitive operator digital filters using a carry save decomposition

    No full text
This paper introduces a method for optimising digital filter realisations at the gate level. The method is based on a derivative of the primitive operator approach of Bull and Horrocks which is extended using a carry-save decomposition of the primitive operator graph. This facilitates the generation of a set of Boolean expressions for the multiply-accumulate section of the filter which can be minimised using standard sum of products or Reed Muller techniques. The technique is fully described and results are presented for a representative range of FIR filters. Savings of up to 83% are obtained for sum-of-products minimisation when compared to a CSD coded hard-wired multiplier solution. Initial results suggest further improvements in excess of 20% for the Reed Muller cas

Perception of American Pit Bull Terriers

    No full text
abstract: Behavior traits were examined in an observed experiment with the presentation of an American Pit Bull Terrier. The experiment was conducted at two locations (Wal Mart, Pet Smart) with searching for behavior traits (positive, negative) with an American Pit Bull Terrier present. In contrast to the hypothesis, there was more positive behavior traits than negative behavior traits. Together, these findings suggest that the presentation of an American Pit Bull Terrier has a more positive outlook on the breed rather than negative. Similar studies should be conducted to change the legislation in regard of "Pit Bulls" that cause discrimination against the breed
