Quincy Jones' Q's: Ollie Howell quartet residency
Polyarts is thrilled to announce that Quincy Jones has invited multi-award winning drummer, instrumentalist, composer and producer Ollie Howell to perform the opening residency at his first ever club, Q’s Bar and Lounge at the Palazzo Versace Dubai.
The residency runs from the hotel’s opening night on 14 November until 12 February. In the words of Quincy Jones himself, Ollie Howell is “an unbelievable drummer. So creative I couldn’t believe it… he really is a 360-degree beautiful young cat.” Watch Quincy Jones talking about Ollie to Sky Arts.
Ollie said: “I feel truly honoured and humbled to have been asked by Quincy to perform the opening residency at the club with my group. I really don’t know if my debut album would have been created in quite the same way, had it not been for my interaction with Quincy at that time, and the impact his continued support and help is having on me is simply unquantifiable.”
Set to become Dubai’s most desirable venue for live entertainment, Q’s is based in the Palazzo Versace Dubai and its living room-like space will feature performances from an ever-changing schedule of acts featuring next generation stars, directed by Quincy himself
Firm R&D, innovation and easing financial constraints in China: Does corporate tax reform matter?
This paper studies the relationship between firms' innovation activities, financial constraints and corporate tax reform in China. A firm-level proxy for financial constraints is derived using cash-flow analysis and subsequently linked to various innovation activities of the firm. As an identification strategy, difference in-differences with exact matching is employed to study whether a reduction in the corporate tax burden via China's 2004 value-added tax (VAT) reform influences firms' innovation activities given they face increasing financial constraints. The results reveal that low access to liquidity in the private sector has a persistent negative effect on firms' innovation activities and reduces the innovation success for more R&D intensive firms. Given increasing financial constraints, a reduction in private-sector firms' corporate tax burden spurs new product and process sales despite failing to affect either their decision to pursue R&D or the amount to invest. The findings suggest that easing financial constraints alone cannot correct the market failure caused by underinvestment in China's private sector. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. New X-Ray Observations of the Old Nova CP Puppis and of the More Recent Nova V351 Puppis
We present X-ray observations of the field containing Nova Puppis 1942 (CP Pup) and Nova Puppis 1991 (V351 Pup), done with ASCA in 1998, and with XMM-Newton in 2005. The X-ray and UV luminosity of CP Pup seem to have remained approximately constant since the last X-ray observations of the 1980s, while the optical luminosity has decreased. The X-ray properties of this nova are explained by a high-mass white dwarf (WD) accreting at low rate, in agreement with the nova theory given the large amplitude and other characteristics of the 1942 outburst. Assuming a distance of 1600 pc, the X-ray luminosity of CP Pup is L x = 2.2 × 1033 erg s-1 in the 0.15-10 keV range covered with EPIC, compatible with a magnetic system. The RGS grating spectrum shows a few prominent emission lines, and it is fitted with a cooling flow with mass accretion rate \dot{m} 60 keV, indicating a WD with M > 1.1 M sun. The X-ray flux is modulated with the spectroscopic period of 1.47 hr detected in the optical. Since CP Pup is not an eclipsing system, this is better understood if magnetic accretion occurs: we discuss this possibility and its implications in detail. V351 Pup was detected with XMM-Newton, but not with ASCA. It is a faint, nonsupersoft X-ray source with luminosity L x sime 3 × 1031 erg s-1, a factor of 50 less than measured with ROSAT in 1993

A statistical analysis of circumstellar material in Type Ia supernovae
A key tracer of the elusive progenitor systems of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) is the detection of narrow blueshifted time-varying Na I D absorption lines, interpreted as evidence of circumstellar material surrounding the progenitor system. The origin of this material is controversial, but the simplest explanation is that it results from previous mass-loss in a system containing a white dwarf and a non-degenerate companion star. We present new single-epoch intermediate-resolution spectra of 17 low-redshift SNe Ia taken with XShooter on the European Southern Observatory Very Large Telescope. Combining this sample with events from the literature, we confirm an excess (∼20 per cent) of SNe Ia displaying blueshifted narrow Na I D absorption features compared to redshifted Na I D features. The host galaxies of SNe Ia displaying blueshifted absorption profiles are skewed towards later-type galaxies, compared to SNe Ia that show no Na I D absorption and SNe Ia displaying blueshifted narrow Na I D absorption features have broader light curves. The strength of the Na I D absorption is stronger in SNe Ia displaying blueshifted Na I D absorption features than those without blueshifted features, and the strength of the blueshifted Na I D is correlated with the B − V colour of the SN at maximum light. This strongly suggests the absorbing material is local to the SN. In the context of the progenitor systems of SNe Ia, we discuss the significance of these findings and other recent observational evidence on the nature of SN Ia progenitors. We present a summary that suggests that there are at least two distinct populations of normal, cosmologically useful SNe Ia
