Spectral variability of quasars from the MACHO project database
V- and R-passband light curves of a sample of 59 QSOs, most of which were detected on the basis of variability, have been recently made public as part of the MACHO project database. The high sampling frequency is unique for a statistical QSO sample. Preliminary results of the color variability as a function of redshift are presented
Investigation of transit-selected exoplanet candidates from the MACHO survey
Context.Planets outside our solar system transiting their host star,
i.e. those with an orbital inclination near 90°, are of special
interest to derive physical properties of extrasolar planets. With
the knowledge of the host star's physical parameters, the
planetary radius can be determined. Combined with spectroscopic
observations the mass and therefore the density can be derived from
Doppler-measurements. Depending on the brightness of the host star,
additional information, e.g. about the spin-orbit alignment between
the host star and planetary orbit, can be obtained.
Aims. The last few years have witnessed a growing success of transit
surveys. Among other surveys, the MACHO project provided nine
potential transiting planets, several of them with relatively bright
parent stars. The photometric signature of a transit event is,
however, insufficient to confirm the planetary nature of the faint
companion. The aim of this paper therefore is a determination of the
spectroscopic parameters of the host stars as well as a dynamical
mass determination through Doppler-measurements.
Methods. We obtained follow-up high-resolution spectra for five stars selected
from the MACHO sample, which are consistent with transits of
low-luminosity objects. Radial velocities were determined by means of
cross-correlation with model spectra. The MACHO light-curves were
compared to simulations based on the physical parameters of the system
derived from the radial velocities and spectral analyses.
Results. We show that all transit light-curves of the exoplanet candidates
analysed in this work can be explained by eclipses of stellar
objects, hence none of the five transiting objects is a planet
Macho Icons Going Places
This paper is an exploration of the increasing trend of popular macho representations on the back of three-wheeled auto rickshaws in the Punjab, Pakistan. Through an ethnographic field research it was observed that the painted visuals of popular icons in clichéd heroic poses are rampant on rickshaws, representing a mobile exhibition of urban folk art. These visuals are mostly taken from the local Punjabi film industry, which has eclipsed over the past two decades. This study further explored the reasons for the increase of male figures displayed on rickshaws (and other) popular art and the almost total extinction of female figures because of increased religious assertion in Pakistan over this two-decade period. Our analysis shows that the relationship between rickshaw drivers and a common male audience with these powerful visuals is so strong that it reinforces the 'impulse to image'. The power of macho visuals satisfies the taste of cinemagoers who love to travel by rickshaws loaded with such visuals. We argue that these macho ideal representations have a strong impact on the beholders and they influence society through the power they convey. Finally, this study concludes that the popular macho visuals effectively communicate real emotions and please the mood of vast audiences in particular segments of society
The M31 pixel lensing plan campaign : macho lensing and self-lensing signals

The campaign consists of about 1 month/year observations carried out over 4 years (2007-2010) at the 1.5 m Cassini telescope in Loiano (Astronomical Observatory of BOLOGNA, OAB) plus 10 days of data taken in 2010 at the 2 m Himalayan Chandra Telescope monitoring the central part of M31 (two fields of about 13′ × 12.′6). We establish a fully automated pipeline for the search and the characterization of microlensing flux variations. As a result, we detect three microlensing candidates. We evaluate the expected signal through a full Monte Carlo simulation of the experiment completed by an analysis of the detection efficiency of our pipeline. We consider both "self lensing" and "MACHO lensing" lens populations, given by M31 stars and dark matter halo MACHOs, in M31 and the Milky Way, respectively. The total number of events is consistent with the expected self-lensing rate. Specifically, we evaluate an expected signal of about two self-lensing events. As for MACHO lensing, for full 0.5(10-2) M☉ MACHO halos, our prediction is for about four (seven) events. The comparatively small number of expected MACHO versus self-lensing events, together with the small number statistics at our disposal, do not enable us to put strong constraints on that population. Rather, the hypothesis, suggested by a previous analysis, on the MACHO nature of OAB-07-N2, one of the microlensing candidates, translates into a sizeable lower limit for the halo mass fraction in form of the would-be MACHO population, f, of about 15% for 0.5 M☉ MACHOs.Peer reviewe

"Macho": The singularity of a mock Spanish item
This paper scrutinizes the path of the semantic extension of the originally neutral Spanish term macho ‘male animal’ to the pejorative ‘animal-like man’. Semantic pejoration belongs to one of the techniques that Hill (1995b) identifies when describing Mock Spanish, a type of racist discourse used by monolingual English speakers when using single Spanish words. Prototypically, the author of the semantic change from a positive or neutral to a negative connotation of a Spanish term is the monolingual speaker of American English. This seems not to be the case with respect to macho. In the same theoretical vein as Mock Spanish, many voices attribute the semantic pejoration of macho to the US-English discourse. The objective of this paper is to identify the origin of this pejoration. Methodologically, this is conducted by means of a lexical search of the oldest pejorated macho items in Spanish, and the semantic content of the first macho borrowings in English. For this purpose, I consulted different sources, like diachronic corpora, etymological dictionaries and specialized references on the macho concept for Spanish as well as English. My analysis leads me to conclude that the semantic shift of macho, at least in its written form, developed in both sides of the Mexican-American border at the beginning of the XX century.

Unvelling O poder do macho: an encounter with Heleieth Saffioti
This article makes a tribute to Heleieth Saffioti, especially approaching O poder do macho. This publication was ordered the author, in the 1980’s, with the objective of presenting, to a young and no-academic public, the discrimination against the woman, in the Brazilian society.
Visual satire of the macho ego
1991 Fall.My work began as a satirical critique of the macho ego, but while it remains largely critical of the macho male, it now embraces a more general human issue. Through manipulation of symbolism and carefully considered usage of the picture plane, the work is a visual study of the insular world of the macho self. I have concentrated on containing images and their activity within the picture plane, without suggestion from the viewer. The allusions created by the idea, like the illusions created by the self, are supported by a narcissistic dependence on the internal structure of the image. The symbols - sperm, fire, and hands - represent three critical views of the ego. The progression of the use of these symbols parallels the progression of their interpretation. In conclusion, I have developed two significant means to achieve a more complete exposition of ideas: the symbolic use of conscious containment of visual elements within the picture plane, and the integration of formal elements and content through the transformation of overt symbolism to plastic visual elements
MACHO 311.37557.169:A VY Scl star
Optical surveys, such as the MACHO project, often uncover variable stars whose classification requires follow-up observations by other instruments. We performed X-ray spectroscopy and photometry of the unusual variable star MACHO 311.37557.169 with XMM-Newton in April 2018, supplemented by archival X-ray and optical spectrographic data. The star has a bolometric X-ray luminosity of about 1 × 1032 erg s−1 cm−2 and a heavily absorbed two-temperature plasma spectrum. The shape of its light curve, its overall brightness, its X-ray spectrum, and the emission lines in its optical spectrum suggest that it is most likely a VY Scl cataclysmic variable.</p
