Precarious Motherhood
Precarious Motherhood explores the experiences of racially minoritised mothers living with insecure immigration status and financial hardship in London, UK. It exposes the impact of hostile immigration policies and precarity on mothers’ interpersonal relationships and access to support. The author draws attention to how mothers manage the constraints they face and enact belonging. She then explores the impact on mothers’ couple relationships, friendships, adult kin relationships and faith-based networks. The book underlines the vital role of personal relationships in providing access to resources and support, but also demonstrates how precariously positioned mothers must carefully navigate relational tensions in their everyday lives. It highlights how social infrastructure facilitates relational practices, helping mothers to sustain their children’s wellbeing and their own.
Praise for Precarious Motherhood
'Rachel Benchekroun shows how mothers living without citizenship in a migrant community in Britain navigate kin networks to guard against immigration policies designed to undermine their social connections...This book deftly analyses alternative avenues to community well-being in a context of state violence.'

PLASMA ACTH PRECURSORS (PRO-OPIOMELANOCORTIN AND PRO-ADRENOCORTICOTEROPIN) IN CATS WITH HYPERADRENOCORTICISM
Feline hyperadrenocorticism (FH) is a rare condition. Pituitary-dependant hyperadrenocorticism (PDH) is observed in approximately 80% of cases. Most of the cases are associated with diabetes mellitus. Diagnosis of FH is quite difficult. First, clinical signs are non specific, except for the non systematic feline skin fragility syndrome. Secondly, the specificity of all tests validated for cats is questionable as well. Recently, an ACTH precursor (POMC/pro-ACTH) assay has been validated in cats (Benchekroun et al. , Proc Am Coll Vet Intern Med (ACVIM) Forum 2008). The aim of this preliminary study is to evaluate prospectively the plasma concentration of ACTH precursors in a small cohort of cats with PDH and estimate its usefulness in its diagnosis.
Three groups of cats were defined. Group 1 included cats with PDH. The diagnosis of FH was based on clinical data and low-dose dexamethasone suppression test (LDDST). PDH was demonstrated by adrenal and pituitary gland CT scan. Group 2 and 3 included diabetic and apparently healthy cats respectively. For the two groups, FH was excluded by LDDST or Urine Cortisol:Creatinine Ratio (UCCR).
Whole blood was collected from the cats on EDTA-tubes; after immediate centrifugation at 4°C, plasma was promptly frozen (-80°C) until assay.
Six cats were included in group 1. 5 cats had a large pituitary tumor with a height ranging from 6 mm to 27 mm. No pituitary tumor was visualised in the remaining cat. Plasma ACTH precursor concentrations ranging from 132 to 1412 pmol/L were measured in PDH cats with large tumors; the remaining cat of group 1 had an ACTH precursor concentration <26 pmol/L. Group 2 and 3 included 8 and 13 cats respectively. Plasma ACTH precursors ranged respectively from <26 to 96 pmol/L and from <26 to 99 pmol/L.
Although being found in a small number of cats, these results suggest that large corticotropic tumors are associated in that species with large plasma concentration of ACTH precursors like in dogs. No plasma POMC/pro-ACTH concentration above 100 pmol/L was found in cats free of PDH. The specificity of high plasma ACTH precursor concentration in cats with PDH has to be confirmed on a larger cohort. If confirmed, given the high prevalence of large pituitary tumors, the introduction of this tool could offer a gain of specificity in the general approach of feline PDH

NONRENEWABLE RESOURCE OLIGOPOLIES AND THE CARTEL-FRINGE GAME
We specify and solve a closed-loop dominant firm nonrenewable resource game, with a price-taking fringe. We show that (i) the outcomes of the closed-loop and the open-loop dominant firm nonrenewable resource game (a la Salant 1976) coincide and (ii) when the number of fringe firms becomes arbitrarily large, the equilibrium outcome of the closed-loop oligopoly game does not coincide with the equilibrium outcome of the closed-loop dominant firm nonrenewable resource game. Thus, the interpretation of the dominant firm model, where the fringe is assumed from the outset to be the price-taker, as a limit case of an asymmetric oligopoly where the number of fringe firms tends to infinity, does not extend to the case where firms can use closed-loop strategies.
Lean manufacturing in the valve pre-assembly area of a bottling lines production plant: An Italian case study
This paper describes a case study on lean manufacturing implementation to the valve pre-assembly area of a bottling lines production plant in Italy, and it is a pilot project for a wider lean implementation in the whole organization, with the aim of rationalizing all processes and improving efficiency. The case study was deeply described, justifying the implementation of lean in an area of an Engineer-To-Order (ETO) company. Despite the context, lean led to significant improvement in throughput rates (+50%), average lead times (-80%) and products quality. Also, the pilot assembly plant greatly decreased the occupied space on the shop floor. For all these reasons, lean is also confirmed as a strategic choice in ETO companies, where this philosophy can lead to a new way of thinking and working towards successful and long-lasting results

Emission taxation, green innovations and inverted-U aggregate R&D efforts in a linear state oligopoly game
We revisit the well known differential Cournot game with polluting emissions dating back to Benchekroun and Long (1998), proposing a version of the model in which environmental taxation is levied on emissions rather than the environmental damage. This allows to attain strong time consistency under open-loop information, and yields two main results which can be summarized as follows: (i) to attain a fully green technology in steady state, the regulator may equivalently adopt an appropriate tax rate (for any given number of firms) or regulate market access (for any given tax rate); (ii) if the environmental damage depends on emissions only (i.e., not on industry output) then the aggregate green R&D effort takes an inverted-U shape, in accordance with Aghion et al. (2005), and the industry structure maximising aggregate green innovation also minimises individual and aggregate emissions
