Flows, currents, and cycles for Markov chains: Large deviation asymptotics
No full textWe consider a continuous time Markov chain on a countable state space. We prove a joint large deviation principle (LDP) of the empirical measure and current in the limit of large time interval. The proof is based on results on the joint large deviations of the empirical measure and flow obtained in Bertini et al. (in press). By improving such results we also show, under additional assumptions, that the LDP holds with the strong L1
topology on the space of currents. We deduce a general version of the Gallavotti–Cohen (GC) symmetry for the current field and show that it implies the so-called fluctuation theorem for the GC functional. We also analyze the large deviation properties of generalized empirical currents associated to a fundamental basis in the cycle space, which, as we show, are given by the first class homological coefficients in the graph underlying the Markov chain. Finally, we discuss in detail some examples

Francesca Bertini
No full textFrancesca Bertini was an extremely careful guardian of her image and legacy throughout her whole life. A major star of the international silent screen, she has recounted her hugely successful career in different autobiographic writings and interventions. An invaluable source of information for the history of Italian cinema, these documents are notoriously reticent—and sometimes unreliable—about certain personal details of her life. For example, she never revealed to have been first registered in 1892 at an orphanage in Florence as Elena Taddei, the daughter of Adelina di Venanzio Fratiglioni, a single mother and possibly a stage actress (Jandelli 2006, 31-2). While many sources indicate her first surname to be Seracini, the only concrete information we have about her acquired identity is that she became Elena Vitiello in 1910, when her mother married Arturo Vitiello, a Neapolitan propman or furniture dealer. Bertini was introduced to the sprightly Neapolitan theatrical milieu at an early age. She got her first, supporting role on stage when she was just seventeen, in the widely acclaimed 1909 production of “Assunta Spina”—an intense southern melodrama by reputed author Salvatore Di Giacomo. One of the most representative texts of the new Neapolitan popular theater, “Assunta Spina” was later transposed on screen by Bertini in 1915. The final result is still regarded as one of the masterpieces of Italian silent cinema and an emblematic example of Verist cinema. By 1915, Bertini had already been cast in more than 50 films, including many one and two-reel historical reconstructions and a few features. The following years saw her continuing to grow in popularity, with her films gaining huge acclaim wherever they were presented, from Europe to Latin America and from Russia to the United States
The FUP Credibility: a user satisfaction survey
No full textThis research deals with electronic publishing contemporary academic context. In particular the focus of the research is to verify the degree of credibility of Firenze University Press (FUP), academic electronic press project of the University of Florence, investigating its users’ perceptions and opinions. This survey was motivated by the need of FUP to develop a strategy focused to rationalise resources, responding to users requirements. Survey investigated mainly two categories of FUP user: professors as customers, authors (or potential authors) and students, as customers. Mixed method have adopted to draw the survey model, that combining qualitative and quantitative approaches, use both of them. Sample survey methodology have been used to obtain a picture of the general trend of faculty of the University of Florence, by selecting and measuring a sample from the whole population. Research have been directed to a sample of ‘electronically oriented’ users, those who have no prides towards Internet and email as information and communication tools and let personal email to be visible on the University website. On the basis of data and opinions gathered emerged:

Toric and tropical Bertini theorems in positive characteristic
No full textWe generalize the toric Bertini theorem of Fuchs, Mantova, and Zannier to positive characteristic. A key part of the proof is a new algebraically closed field containing the field \kk(t_1,\dots,t_d) of rational functions over an algebraically closed field \kk of prime characteristic. As a corollary, we extend the tropical Bertini theorem of Maclagan and Yu to arbitrary characteristic, which removes the characteristic dependence from the d-connectivity result for tropical varieties from that paper
Conformal structure of the Schwarzschild black hole.
No full textWe show that the scalar wave equation at low frequencies in the Schwarzschild geometry enjoys a hidden SL(2,R) invariance, which is not inherited from an underlying symmetry of the spacetime itself. Contrary to what happens for Kerr black holes, the vector fields generating the SL(2,R) are globally defined. Furthermore, it turns out that under an SU(2,1) Kinnersley transformation, which maps the Schwarzschild solution into the near horizon limit AdS_2 x S^2 of the extremal Reissner-Nordstr"om black hole (with the same entropy), the Schwarzschild hidden symmetry generators become exactly the isometries of the AdS_2 factor. Finally, we use the SL(2,R) symmetry to determine algebraically the quasinormal frequencies of the Schwarzschild black hole, and show that this yields the correct leading behaviour for large damping
Fine-grain watermarking for intellectual property protection
No full textThe current online digital world, consisting of thousands of newspapers, blogs, social media, and cloud file sharing services, is providing easy and unlimited access to a large treasure of text contents. Making copies of these text contents is simple and virtually costless. As a result, producers and owners of text content are interested in the protection of their intellectual property (IP) rights. Digital watermarking has become crucially important in the protection of digital contents. Out of all, text watermarking poses many challenges, since text is characterized by a low capacity to embed a watermark and allows only a restricted number of alternative syntactic and semantic permutations. This becomes even harder when authors want to protect not just a whole book or article, but each single sentence or paragraph, a problem well known to copyright law. In this paper, we present a fine-grain text watermarking method that protects even small portions of the digital content. The core method is based on homoglyph characters substitution for latin symbols and whitespaces. It allows to produce a watermarked version of the original text, preserving the anonymity of the users according to the right to privacy. In particular, the embedding and extraction algorithms allow to continuously protect the watermark through the whole document in a fine-grain fashion. It ensures visual indistinguishability and length preservation, meaning that it does not cause overhead to the original document, and it is robust to the copy and past of small excerpts of the text. We use a real dataset of 1.8 million New York articles to evaluate our method. We evaluate and compare the robustness against common attacks, and we propose a new measure for partial copy and paste robustness. The results show the effectiveness of our approach providing an average length of 101 characters needed to embed the watermark and allowing to protect paragraph-long excerpt or smaller the 94.5% of the times
