Spontaneous improvement of spatial coherence and frequency locking in high-pump-power multimode lasers
By using the time average of amplitude products we are able to identify changes in the dynamical complexity and the spatial coherence of a multimode laser. We find that there are cases in which as the pump increases, the dynamical complexity decreases and the spatial coherence improves. In some limiting cases the complexity is reduced to zero and the beam is completely coherent spatially. We show that these phenomena are caused by phase synchronization of the mode amplitudes and that they can be observed using slow detectors.<br/
Pattern formation in lasers with Fabry-Perot cavities and hard-edge diffraction
We show that the presence of cylindric metallic objects, such as waveguides and apertures, inside lasers with Fabry-Perot cavities modifies considerably the symmetry of these systems. This, in turn, changes the structure of the patterns that can be observed and could lead to the use of patterns as a way of studying properties of the scattering objects
Bistability of liquid crystal microcavities
We develop a model of a liquid crystal Fabry-Pérot microcavity. We study the homeotropic and the hybrid cavity configurations and show that both are multistable. Moreover, in the hybrid case a branch of solutions disconnected from the zero field solution exists
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Correction: Differences between experimental and placebo arms in manual therapy trials: a methodological review (BMC Medical Research Methodology, (2022), 22, 1, (219), 10.1186/s12874-022-01704-8)
Following publication of the original article [1], the authors reported an error in the presentation of author names. The given name and family name were swapped. The correct author names are as follows: Giandomenico D’Alessandro, Nuria Ruffini, Alessandro Aquino, Matteo Galli, Mattia Innocenti, Marco Tramontano, Francesco Cerritelli. The author group has been updated above and the original article [1] has been corrected
Soft turbulence in multimode laser
Using a weakly nonlinear analysis, we study the behavior of a homogeneously broadened laser in the vicinity of the second threshold. We show that the dynamics is described by a complex Ginzburg-Landau equation coupled to a Fokker-Plank equation. Although the cubic term of the Ginzburg-Landau equation is destabilizing for all parameter values, bounded solutions exist because of the strong nonlinear dispersion ('dispersive chaos'). A careful numerical study of the original Maxwell-Bloch equations is also carried out to investigate the role played by off-resonant solutions
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
