Fortifications of the Western Borderland of the Soviet Union between 1918–1939
In this article, the author explores the permanent fortifications known as the “Fortified Districts”, and unofficially as the “Stalin Line”, which were established on the western borderland of the Soviet Union between 1929 and 1939. The Soviet theory of developing a fortification system along the entire western borderland envisaged protection of the most important operational and strategic directions: Leningrad, Moscow, and Kiev. According to Soviet plans, the basis for the line of fortifications was the Fortified Districts. In terms of manpower, they were equivalent to an infantry brigade, with powerful firing assets matching those of a corps. Overall, a typical Fortified District ranged from 100 to 180 km in length (140 on average) and from 30 to 50 km in depth (42 on average), and was varied in nature. The “Stalin Line” was built between 1929 and 1939, and this period can be divided into two distinctive phases, namely: the first, covering years from 1931 to 1934, which witnessed the construction of the first thirteen Fortified Districts, fully equipped where possible; the second period, covering the years from 1936 to 1939, when a decision was made to close the gaps existing between the thirteen Fortified Districts by adding eight more, to further reinforce the fortifications by placing heavy artillery in the flanking bunkers, and to complete the formation of the fireteams. The development of the fortified districts lasted probably until the end of August 1939, after which it was stopped on the explicit orders of Joseph Stalin. It is reasonable to believe that this decision originated, among others, in the signing of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact on 23 August 1939. At the same time, it can be concluded that the eastern neighbour of Poland, who on 17 September 1939 became its aggressor, had a well-developed fortification system along its western border. Starting with 28 June 1940, it constituted a new line of fortifications known as the “Molotov Line”.Szkic eksploruje stałe umocnienia fortyfikacyjne zwane „Umocnionymi Rejonami”, a nieoficjalnie „Linią Stalina”, która powstała na zachodnim pograniczu Związku Sowieckiego w latach 1929–1939. Należy sądzić, iż decyzja ta wynikała m.in. z podpisania 23 sierpnia 1939 r. paktu Ribbentrop–Mołotow. Można jednocześnie skonstatować, iż wschodni sąsiad, a następnie agresor Polski z 17 września 1939 r. posiadał na swoim zachodnim pograniczu dobrze rozwinięty system fortyfikacyjny. Natomiast od 28 czerwca 1940 r. stanowił on nową linię umocnień zwaną „Linią Mołotowa”
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Deportacje i rozmieszczenie obywateli polskich wyznania mojżeszowego na obszarach Związku Socjalistycznych Republik Radzieckich w latach 1939-1943
The presented article addresses the history of the Second Polish Republic’s political relations with the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in 1939-1943. The study aims to characterize the mass deportations and the distribution of Polish citizens in the territory of the Soviet Union, with emphasis on the population of the Mosaic faith. The statistical method was used to analyze and assess the fundamental issues related to the exploration of the Jewish population against the background of the national structure of Poland in the years 1918-1939, mass deportations of the people of the Eastern Borderlands by the Soviet authorities in 1940-1941, and the areas of the Soviet state where people from the occupied territories of the Second Polish Republic were deployed. The substantive considerations also indicated that mass deportation actions and everyday life on “inhuman land” reached not only Poles but also Polish citizens of the Mosaic faith.
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Sojusze polityczno-militarne w kształtowaniu bezpieczeństwa Polski w latach 1918-1939
Poland was forming allied relations in the twenties and thirties of the twentieth century due to the state’s weakness, mainly in military and economic terms. The Polish state’s situation regarding political and military security guarantees on the part of other subjects of the international community was neither stable nor advantageous during that period. That was influenced, among others, by the following phenomena: changes in the international arena that were unfavorable for the Second Republic of Poland, diplomatic activities of Germany and the USSR aimed at revising the borders of the Polish state, political and military rapprochement between the USSR and Germany in the area of economic and military cooperation, conciliatory and ineffective international policy of the Western powers (mainly the French Republic) towards Germany in the late 1920s, impermanence and low effectiveness of bilateral agreements and declarations concluded by Poland with its eastern neighbor – the Soviet Union and its western neighbor – Germany, ineffectiveness of the political-military alliances concluded by Poland with France, Romania, and the United Kingdom, and significant disproportions between Polish and German and Soviet industrial and military potential, combined with the inability of the western powers to fulfil their allied obligations in practical terms.W latach dwudziestych i trzydziestych XX wieku Polska zawierała związki sojusznicze z powodu słabości państwa, przede wszystkim w wymiarze militarnym i ekonomicznym.
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
