An Interview with Cass R. Sunstein: Author of The World According to Star Wars
The guest editors of special issue 12, Jason W. Ellis and Sean Scanlan, interview Cass R. Sunstein, the Robert Walmsley University Professor at Harvard, where he is founder and director of the Program on Behavioral Economics and Public Policy. He is the author of many books, including the bestseller Nudge: Improving Decisions about Health, Wealth, and Happiness (with Richard H. Thaler). His 2016 book The World According to Star Wars attempts to understand the Star Wars universe in ten chapters through the lenses of Sunstein’s academic interests, namely: culture, sociology, psychology, behavioral science, and political science. The book is both personal and theoretical, practical and academic. It takes accurate measure of the genesis of the movies, the movies themselves, and briefly, but trenchantly, it examines concepts such as reputational cascades and speculates on what Star Wars can teach viewers about constitutional disputes
Appropriations of Irish drama by modern Korean nationalist theatre : a focus on the influence of Sean O’Casey in a colonial context
My thesis explores how a translated author on the periphery of the host culture’s
translated repertoire can be at once subversive and innovative on the colonial scene,
using as an example the case of Sean O’Casey in colonial Korea. It explores the
importation of Irish drama in modern Korean theatre during the colonial period and
examines the appropriations of O’Casey’s plays by a central Korean playwright, Yu
Chi-jin, in creating his own plays. Under Japanese colonial rule in the early twentieth
century, intellectuals perceived the supreme task for the Korean people to be the
recovery of national sovereignty and independence. The modern Korean theatre
movement which rose among Korean intellectuals and dramatists during the colonial
period was to play a major part in this task. The ultimate goal of this movement was
to establish a modern national theatre promoting Korean culture and educating the
people, thereby recovering national independence. As their modernised dramatic
polysystem was still "young", Korean intellectuals and dramatists who were
involved in the theatre movement had to borrow dramatic models from other
countries. One of the models they chose was Irish playwrights, especially those who
were involved in the Irish dramatic movement. They published or staged the works
of W.B. Yeats, Lord Dunsany [Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett], Augusta
Gregory, J.M. Synge, St. J. Ervine, T.C. Murray and Sean O'Casey. Although
O'Casey was considered an important dramatist in the Irish dramatic movement, he
was a playwright on the periphery in the list of translated Irish dramatists in Korea
due to the colonisers’ censorship. However, he remained as a subversive and
innovative playwright on the colonial scene by virtue of being appropriated by Yu
Chi-jin who used O’Casey’s plays as models when creating his own works. In
discussing the subject matter of my thesis, I use Even Zohar’s polysystems theory as
a starting point in looking at ideological issues surrounding translation and extend
the discussion to offer a postcolonial perspective. While most translation in a
colonial context was considered as "an expression of the cultural power of the
colonisers," my thesis shifts the focus to translation as an expression of the cultural
power of the colonised. I explore how the colonised uses another colonised culture to
subvert the colonisers’ power

Absorbing new subjects: holography as an analog of photography
I discuss the early history of holography and explore how perceptions, applications, and forecasts of the subject were shaped by prior experience. I focus on the work of Dennis Gabor (1900–1979) in England,Yury N. Denisyuk (b. 1924) in the Soviet Union, and Emmett N. Leith (1927–2005) and Juris Upatnieks (b. 1936) in the United States. I show that the evolution of holography was simultaneously promoted and constrained by its identification as an analog of photography, an association that influenced its assessment by successive audiences of practitioners, entrepreneurs, and consumers. One consequence is that holography can be seen as an example of a modern technical subject that has been shaped by cultural influences more powerfully than generally appreciated.
Conversely, the understanding of this new science and technology in terms of an older one helps
to explain why the cultural effects of holography have been more muted than anticipated by forecasters
between the 1960s and 1990s
Player agency in interactive narrative: audience, actor & author
The question motivating this review paper is, how can
computer-based interactive narrative be used as a constructivist learn-
ing activity? The paper proposes that player agency can be used to
link interactive narrative to learner agency in constructivist theory,
and to classify approaches to interactive narrative. The traditional
question driving research in interactive narrative is, ‘how can an in-
teractive narrative deal with a high degree of player agency, while
maintaining a coherent and well-formed narrative?’ This question
derives from an Aristotelian approach to interactive narrative that,
as the question shows, is inherently antagonistic to player agency.
Within this approach, player agency must be restricted and manip-
ulated to maintain the narrative. Two alternative approaches based
on Brecht’s Epic Theatre and Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed are
reviewed. If a Boalian approach to interactive narrative is taken the
conflict between narrative and player agency dissolves. The question
that emerges from this approach is quite different from the traditional
question above, and presents a more useful approach to applying in-
teractive narrative as a constructivist learning activity

President Obamas presidential victory in 2008 was seen as a historic moment, and many people claimed Obamas election made America a post-racial society. However, since his election, Obamas growing opposition asserted that their antipathy was based on his party and policies, but this resistance may instead be rooted in a subtle racism. Though Obama has sought to transcend race, this opposition suggests that America is not at all a post-racial society

This article gives an overview of co-citation analysis and its applications in tracking the linkages among the intellectual works and mapping the evolutionary structure of scientific disciplines. It also focuses on the features, interface, terminology used, merits and demerits of co-citation based online database applications
Staging the Easter Rising: Plays by W.B. Yeats, Sean O’Casey and Colm Tóibín
Despite the fact that the 1916 Easter Rising has given rise to many critical inquiries and occasioned heated debate among nationalist and revisionist historians, this historical event has been revered almost as a creation story for the Republic of Ireland. This paper will examine three plays that revisit the Rising and feature the generally neglected participation of women in the events. By illustrating women’s quandaries and antagonisms, the plays either reflect on the causes and effects of remote English rule in Ireland or delineate the immediate impact of the Easter Rising on different social strata. Their alternative perspectives often feature the conflicting consequences of the Rising and illuminate ignored yet credible facets that may serve to rebut the received interpretations. Although there is a relatively long time span during which these works were produced, the social contexts in which the playwrights lived and worked give rise to diverse portrayals of the same political turmoil. More significantly, these plays initiate a debate on the Easter Rising yet produce healing effects by restaging historical traumas. The three plays are Yeats’s less discussed play The Dreaming of the Bones (1919), Sean O’Casey’s The Plough and the Stars (1926), and Colm Tóibín’s Beauty in a Broken Place (2004). Hello Rebels Family!
It's easy to believe that the rich and famous are born well...rich and famous. Not so! On the
way to being famous...Gwen Stefani worked at Dairy Queen, Madonna was fired from Dunkin'
Donuts, Brad Pitt handed out flyers wearing a chicken suit for El Polio Loco, Rachel McAdams
was a server at McDonald's and Beyonce was swept up hair in her mother's salon. There are
jobs you will have before you 'make it' too. Some you will enjoy. And some - not so much.
On my way to becoming a teacher I was a waiter, a landscaper, a tree planter, and a
bartender. Some of these jobs I liked and some I hated. But ALL of these jobs brought me to
the profession I love and shaped who I have become.
At W.R. Myers High School we are proud of being a school where every student can find an
avenue for success and in being part of a community where everyone in the Rebel family
strives to find the best in themselves and others. As Christian Larson said, "Believe in yourself
and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle."
Remember that you are the star of your own life and that, with hard work, your dreams will become reality!

Wow! What a year! I chose "REBEL RESILIENCE" as the yearbook theme this year as I thought it was rather fitting given our
current 'COVID-1 9' situation. Some of you are already VERY RESILIENT, while others may feel like you are not. One thing is
for sure - you can always WORK on becoming MORE resilient.
Here are 10 ways you can work on becoming more resilient:
Have the courage to be imperfect
Take time for yourself
Sign up for that course, join that club
Be active every day in as many ways as you can
Spend time with people who make you feel good
Laugh out loud each day
Invite your neighbor (friend) over for a cup of tea (chat)
Do one thing now that you've been putting off
Focus more on things you can control

Thank you to all those who gave me a big smile (or at least didn't run away) when I put the camera in front of your face! I
apologize to those teams I missed getting photos of (that actually had the opportunity to play). Because this year is unlike any
other, I also decided to change up the color scheme from the traditional red/black/yellow! I would love some feedback on
this decision (love it/dislike it etc).
A huge shout-out to a stellar group of grade 9's who helped me with the yearbook in June (Madisen and Bryden O'Connor,
Kiernan Gyepesi, Will Evanson, Madison Reid, Heston Bevans and Allen Clements). Thank you specifically to Bryden O'Connor
for creating the color graphic used throughout the yearbook.
Some of the quotes found through out the yearbook were from the survey you filled out in the spring, which in, most cases,
does not have the author information and therefore simply states the grade level the quote came from. All other quotes with
Author Unknown" were found online and in most cases didn't have any author information either. In any case, my hope is
that they will either put a smile on your face, make you go 'hmm' or possibly even take time to pause and reflect on the

It was a sad reality that we all had to face this year with little to no athletic
competitions across the Province for High School Sport. But very thankfully, and
in true Rebel Spirit, we made the most of the situation and were able to organize
and provide our student-athletes with a few opportunities to participate in sport.
The Rebels made teams and practiced as much as they possibly could in football,
volleyball, cross-country, golf, basketball, and curling. Unfortunately, a few of our
traditional sports were not able to get off the ground in the Spring, but hopefully
that will only fuel the fire of the up and coming athletes for next season! We want
to give a big thanks to all those student-athletes and coaches who committed to
one or more of our teams during these tough, unprecedented circumstances, and
a special shout out to all the Grade 1 2 student-athletes for all of their years of
dedication to High School Sport!

The W.R. Myers Concert and
Stage Bands were unable to
perform this year due to COVID,
but we were lucky enough to still
be able to play our instruments.
Vince Gassi, a composer from
Toronto, was commissioned by
the W.R. Myers Band Parent
Association to write a piece for
the Concert Band. The band
students met with Mr. Gassi via
Zoom in October to talk to him
about the piece and the writing
process. He completed the piece
for us in January and we began
working on it. Again the band
students met with Mr. Gassi on
Zoom for him to listen to us play
and give feedback. But
unfortunately due to the COVID
restrictions, we were unable to
premier the piece. Hopefully,
next year we will be able to play
Tomorrow Shines Soon.

..had the opportunity to be a part of the "Minister's Youth Council." The Minister's Youth Council consists of 40 junior and senior high school students (in
Alberta) all of which have many diverse interests, perspectives, and backgrounds. Students get the opportunity to share their perspectives on many different
topics in education. Over the last couple of years students on this council have worked with the Alberta Government Education Department, MLA's,
industry professionals, teachers and school boards to help better education in out province. Specifically, these students helped inform a vaping policy from
Edmonton Public Schools, assisted in the creation of Bill 1 9 which aims to reduce vaping use in Alberta and helped shape the Ministerial Order on Student
Learning.

Sayge Turcato was in the Alberta
High School Rodeo Provincials
Finals at the beginning of June
she went into the finals as the
season leader in the Barrel
Racing and she was 8th in
District 1 for the Breakaway
Roping with a few go round wins
she ended up winning the
Alberta Finals in the Barrel
Racing and placing 4th in the
Breakaway. That qualified Sayge
to go to the National High School
Rodeo Finals 2021 in Lincoln,
Nebraska.
Way to go Sayge!!
Kayce Liptak has also had a great showing this year
so far. She placed 2nd at Provincials, just behind
Sayce Turcato. This meant that she also qualified to
go to the National High School Rodeo Finals 2021
in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The Taber Thrashers get a season after all! With vaccinate numbers up and COVID cases dropping substantially
after a short shutdown the Lacrosse league got the green light to play. And play they did! If you enjoy watching
playing a high-intensity, high-contact sport, then this is a game for you! With the Lacrosse league in its infancy in
^ber (this is just the second season of play) the team did a stellar job working on basic skills, learning plays, and
Alling as a team unit. They definitely had their ups and downs where the scoreboard was concerned. But considering
^ey were up against teams with many more years experience, the Thrashers had a phenomenal season!

Creating culturally-safe schools for Māori students
In order to better understand the present trends in New Zealand’s schooling contexts, there is a clarion call for educators to develop sensitivity and sensibility towards the cultural backgrounds and experiences of Māori students. This paper reports on the work of four scholars who share research that has been undertaken in educational settings with high numbers of Māori students, and discusses the importance of creating culturally-safe schools – places that allow and enable students to be who and what they are. The theoretical frameworks drawn on are based on both a life partnership analogy as well as on a socio-cultural perspective on human development and learning. The Māori worldview presented in this paper is connected to the Treaty of Waitangi, The Educultural Wheel and the Hikairo Rationale. Data were collected from two ethnographic case studies and analysed through these frameworks. Practical suggestions are then made for using restorative practices and creating reciprocal relationships in classrooms within an environment of care.
