Polyphony and the anxiety of influence in the fiction of Henry James

    No full text
James's fiction, especially in the Middle Phase, centres on the figure of the artist and is characterized by, the two interrelated aspects which previous criticism has largely overlooked: the Bakhtinian 'polyphonic' -creation of 'author-thinkers'; and the conflict between ephebes and precursors, for which Harold-Bloom's concept of 'the-anxiety of influence' is the most illuminating model. Polyphony is the narrative mode, and influence is the intra-artistic, theme. These, as the Introduction to the thesis makes clear, are rehearsed in James's inaugural novel, Roderick Hudson. Rowland Mallet is an author-thinker, and his failure is caused by authorial limitations. His monologism -is impaired by his mistaking empathy for the authorial sympathy. Likewise, Hudson's failure does not arise from a mercurial temperament, but from a polyphonic shortcoming: not possessing the power of fiction to contain the fiction of power in, his mentor. And the relationships among the three artists - Gloriani, Hudson and Singleton - perfectly exemplify the Bloomian-theme. It is these two concepts, polyphony and influence, which are the major preoccupation in the Middle Phase; as, the works chosen demonstrate. These are a novella, a novel, and a number of short stories all of which have been unjustifiably neglected. Chapter One, on The Aspern Papers, argues that Tina Bordereau, far from being, the artless victim seen by many critics, actually challenges and defeats the narrator by the very form of her narrative. Her 'realist' discourse undermines his language of 'romance', and shows up its internal unstability. Chapter Two is an extensive study of the critical reception of The Tragic Muse. The most common areas of critical attention have been its contemporary topicality, its relation to previous novels on similar themes, and the possible genealogy of Gabriel Nash. Those have all missed the core of the work. - Chapter Three demonstrates how polyphony and the anxiety of influence make the novel what it really is. Influence arises from the juxtaposition of, and the wrestling between, artistic ephebes and their precursors (Nick and Nash,, Miriam and Madame Carre). The dialogic quality defined by Bakhtin is crucial to the proper, and even-handed, characterization of all, the conflicts in the novel. And since most of James's tales in the eighties and nineties -are about 'masters - and acolytes, the anxiety of influence remains central. Chapter Four is a study of 'The Author of Beltraffiol' and 'The Lesson of the Master'. Again the characters' manipulations are a crucial focus in a way that G6rard Genette's terminology helps to illuminate. The fact that the ephebe is the author-thinker emphasizes the inextricability of the Bakhtinian and the Bloomian in James. Just as polyphony offers a different focus for explicating the poetics of James's fiction; so the ephebal conflict provides the basis for a fresh perception of James's own artistic struggle

A Study of Bozza\u27s Eighteen Etudes In The Form of Improvisation For Horn and New Preparatory Etudes on the Works of Bozza

This document serves as an analysis of Eugene Bozza\u27s Dix-Huit Études en Forme d\u27Improvisation pour Cor (1961), translated to Eighteen Etudes in the Form of Improvisation for Horn for the purposes of this document. I found and documented all motifs within the eighteen etudes, and categorized connections between them and Bozza\u27s compositional ouerve as displayed in Dr. Lois Kuyper-Rushing\u27s A Thematic Index of the Works of Bozza. My research takes inspiration from Dr. Kuyper-Rushing\u27s work as well as Dr. Hsing-Fang Liu\u27s research involving Bozza\u27s use of “Adoptive Transcription”, or taking old melodies from previous works and using them in new works. Involved with this document is a recording of all eighteen etudes, recorded and performed by the author at the Barth House, a local Episcopalian center in Memphis, Tennessee. A discussion of each of the 18 etudes, their connections, and the process I had taken in practicing and recording them makes up the middle section of the document. Finally, using the knowledge gained from the connections made and the recordings provided, this document will conclude with three new preparatory etudes for the horn composed by the author in the spirit of making the performance of Bozza\u27s body of work easier for future horn students. In their current state, most of Bozza\u27s Eighteen Etudes in the Form of Improvisation are simply too difficult to be played well by intermediate students

This book presents a comprehensive analysis of the dynamics of the Third World business environment where, unlike the West, government is what the author terms a "megaforce". With hundreds of examples, Austin shows how managers must interact with Third World governments in each of the functional areas of management: finance, production, marketing and organization

Analysis of Fabry-Pérot laser resonators stabilized by microlenses and applications in speckle-free imaging

    No full text
In this work, laser arrays comprising thousands of beams are experimentally demonstrated by stabilizing macroscopic Fabry-Pérot resonators with microlens arrays. The cavity parameters are tunable to either force fundamental-mode lasing across the array or to promote oscillation of various higher-order transverse modes. The fundamental mode produced by this resonator very closely matches theoretical results calculated with standard Gaussian optics as well as numerical Rayleigh-Sommerfeld diffraction results. It was found that the beams are generally uncoupled in this arrangement, and therefore do not produce interference. The resulting emission from large arrays of lasers has a moderate degree of coherence. Therefore, this laser produces very directional light with high brightness that does not generate coherent artefacts. Because of the moderate coherence and nanosecond-scale pulse duration of the light, this laser was shown to be an ideal light source for speckle-free imaging of dynamic targets. Most notably, fruit flies were imaged while flying with high resolution and without speckle or motion blur, an otherwise challenging task because their wings can beat at frequencies up to 200 Hz.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2022-05-01The student, Austin Steinforth, accepted the attached license on 2020-04-11 at 13:06.The student, Austin Steinforth, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2020-04-11 at 13:18.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2020-04-13 at 19:14.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #14962 on 2020-08-25 at 17:27:24Made available in DSpace on 2020-08-26T23:54:31Z (GMT). Surat Jerami di Meja Austin: Penggunaan Speech Act Theory sebagai Usaha Pembacaan Efektif Ujaran Performatif dalam Surat Yakobus

    No full text
Many hermeneutical approaches have been developed in response to interpretive difficulties arising from the reading of text, especially sacred writings. The linguistic ontology developed by John Langshaw Austin (1911-1960) might offer a novel perspective for “reading” such an utterance. For Austin, there are multiple kinds of speech effected in the instance of human uttering. A given action therefore results out of a person's given speech. Austin terms “performative utterance” that action performed by way of speech. Further explicating his speech-act theory, Austin outlines that the action exemplified by a given speech are, in fact, three simultaneous acts—first the “locutionary act,” as the compilation of the particular words uttered; next the “illocutionary act,” as the force rendered by this given speech; then the “perlocutionary act,” as the effect consequentially achieved upon a speech's audience. By proposing that Austin's approach be deployed to interpret the Epistle of James, I consider a number of ways in which such an interpretation would be demonstrably enriched via speech-act theory. I contend that an interpreter of James' letter must distinguish among the three kinds of acts being performed in the work of the epistolary author. The culminating aim, then, is to discern what outcomes might have been intended by the epistolary author, in relation to the letter's original audience

Attacks created to exploit these vulnerabilities are remarkably brittle due to their dependence on the presence of specific security settings, use of certain compiler toolchains, and the target's environment. I present Marten, a new end-to-end system for automatically discovering, exploiting, and combining information leakage and buffer overflow vulnerabilities to generate exploits that are robust against defenses, compilation decisions, and environment differences. Marten has generated four control flow hijacking exploits and three information leakage exploits. One of the information leakage exploits is generated against a previously undiscovered zero-day vulnerability in Serveez-0.2.2. CVE-2019-16200 has been assigned to this vulnerability. These results highlight Marten's ability to generate robust exploits that bypass modern defenses to download and execute injected code selected by an attacker.by Austin James Gadient.S.M.S.M. A histological study on the effects of semicarbazide on limb regeneration in Triturus viridescens, 1965

    No full text
There is evidence that some factor or factors resulting from cell injury are conveyed to other cells in unknown fashionj this initiates events of regeneration including cell breakdown, cell migration and multiplication, and ultimately cell differentiation. Histamine, which is a known product of cell injury, is released from cells when they are injured. Metabolically, its formation by decarboxylation of histidine is an attribute of the rapid growth of many tissues. This histological study dealt with stumps of amputated Triturus limbs treated with semicarbazide for many hours at a time in efforts to decrease histamine formation and retard cell breakdown, cell migration and multiplication, and cell differentiation. When limbs were treated with semicarbazide only in preblastemal stages of regeneration, it seemed to have no effect on the course of regeneration histologically. When the early meaenchymatous blastema was treated directly, however, it retarded the expansion and differentiation of the blastema. From the present evidence, it appears that histamine production may not be involved in the initiation of limb regeneration but is probably concerned in the phase of rapid blastema! enlargement, whose primary histological attribute is cellular mitosis
