Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Incontrarsi al limite. Ibridazioni mediterranee nell’Italia preromana

The volume hosts the proceedings of the international conference "Meeting at the Limit: Mediterranean Hybridizations in Pre-Roman Italy", which was held in Ferrara during the 6th through the 8th of June 2019. The conference was dedicated to the specific research theme of borders in the classical world, which is extremely promising for the understanding of the processes of definition of socio-economic and cultural spaces in ancient times. The theme is addressed in an interpretative perspective that sees the liminal areas as open systems of passage and therefore of contact between different realities; of encounters in essentially fluid places that lead to the development of new and unprecedented relationships and therefore of hybridizations. The aim of the work was to widen the historiographical debate already started during the 54th Magna Graecia Study Conference (Hybridization and integration in Magna Graecia: Shapes, models, dynamics) to the Tyrrhenian and especially Adriatic contexts of pre-Roman Italy, areas where the development of Greek culture did not take place according to the poleic model, thus allowing to focus more attention on the phenomena of mobility, fluidity and multiplicity of individuals, resources, practices, and ideas that involved the whole ancient Mediterranean

Modeling the Longitudinal Flight Dynamics of a Fixed-Wing Aircraft by using a Multibody System Approach

Considering the multibody method for the dynamic analysis of mechanical systems, this paper aims at constructing a simple computer model describing the dynamics of a fixed-wing aircraft performing a longitudinal motion. To this end, a simplified model of an aerial vehicle was analyzed without control surfaces, featuring an axial thrust, and having limited aerodynamic actions. By using the Digital DATCOM software, the modeling of the aerodynamic coefficients was then taken into account considering also the elevator as a control surface. First, aircraft dynamics was studied in general in the context of multibody dynamics. Then, the case study considered as the illustrative example of the paper was analyzed, namely the Cessna 172 Skyhawk aircraft. By modeling the externally applied actions and the aerodynamic coefficients, the fundamental mechanics behind the take-off phase of the flight was subsequently analyzed. In the paper, the equations of motion describing the dynamic behavior of the illustrative example were driven using a Lagrangian formulation approach. The dynamic model of the demonstrative example was then implemented in a computer code constructed in the MATLAB environment. By doing so, the goal of this process was to develop as accurately as possible a virtual model of the Cessna 172 Skyhawk aircraft. As shown in the paper using numerical simulations, the computer model of the case study analyzed in this work is able of simulating the vertical motion of the aircraft. In the conclusive part of the manuscript, a discussion about the dynamic behavior of the aircraft found in this investigation and some comments on several topics for future research are reported as wel

Multibody Modeling and Dynamical Analysis of a Fixed-Wing Aircraft

This study is aimed at developing a simplified virtual model capable of simulating the dynamic behavior of a fixed-wing aircraft by applying the multibody approach. The case of an aircraft with simplified aerodynamics, an axial thrust, and without control surfaces is considered. After modeling the aerodynamic actions following a Lagrangian approach, the equations of motion are analytically derived and numerically implemented in a MATLAB computer code to develop a virtual model capable of simulating the dynamic behavior of the aircraft. Finally, the numerical results found are presented and a discussion on the numerical results is provided, paying attention to the Cessna 172 Skyhawk, which is considered as the case study

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
