Internet Exchanges for Used Books: An Empirical Analysis of Welfare Implications
Information technology-enabled exchanges have enhanced the viability of a variety of secondary
markets, notably markets for used books. Electronic used book exchanges, in particular, offer a wider selection, lower search costs, and significantly lower prices than physical used bookstores do. The increased viability of these used book markets has caused concern among groups such as the Book Publishers Association and AuthorâÃÂÃÂs Guild who believe that used book markets will significantly cannibalize new book sales.
This proposition, while theoretically possible, is based on speculation as opposed to empirical
evidence. In this research, we use a unique dataset collected from Amazon.comâÃÂÃÂs new and used
marketplaces to estimate the impact of IT-enabled used book markets on new book sales. We use
these data to calculate the impact of these secondary market exchanges on consumer and publisher welfare by calculating the cross-price elasticity of new books sales with respect to used
book prices.
Our analysis suggests that IT-enabled secondary market exchanges increase consumer surplus by
approximately 32 million in gross profit annually (about 0.2% of total gross profit) due to the
presence of AmazonâÃÂÃÂs used book markets. Further, the additional used book readership gain
from these electronic markets may mitigate author losses through increased revenue from secondary
sources such as speaking and licensing fees. These surplus changes, combined with the estimated
$64 million the used book market added to AmazonâÃÂÃÂs gross profits, show that IT-enabled used markets for books have a strong positive first-order impact on total welfare.Information Systems Working Papers Serie

The Myth of the Double-Blind Review? Author Identification Using Only Citations
Prior studies have questioned the degree of anonymity of the double-blind review process for scholarly research articles. For example, one study based on a survey of reviewers concluded that authors often could be identified by reviewers using a combination of the author's reference list and the referee's personal background knowledge. For the KDD Cup 2003 competition's "Open Task" we examined how well various automatic matching techniques could identify authors within the competition's very large archive of research papers. This paper describes the issues surrounding author identification, how these issues motivated our study, and the results we obtained. The best method, based on discriminative self-citations, identified authors correctly 40-45% of the time. One main motivation for double-blind review is to eliminate bias in favor of well-known authors. However, identification accuracy for authors with substantial publication history is even better (60% accuracy for the top-10% most prolific authors, 85% for authors with 100 or more prior papers).NYU, Stern School of Business, IOMS Department, Center for Digital Economy Researc
This study aims to investigate and create a better understanding of why the different regions of Sweden have chosen their integration platform within the healthcare sector. Due to the decentralisation and political governance there is a complexity within the healthcare sector various integration platforms. The author has looked at the choices that the different regions have made based on strategic, economical, technical, operational and cultural characteristics. The various regions size is also investigated as a factor, making a distinction between higher and lower populated regions. An integration platform acts as an intermediary, allowing the various systems to communicate with each other without having a point-to-point connection. At present there is no integration platform at the forefront of supporting all the different needs of the different regions, each region finds the solution that is best for itself
Path-oriented synchronized transit scheduling using time-dependent data
With the emergence of innovations associated with public transport (PT) services, such as Mobility-as-a-Service, demand responsive transit, and autonomous vehicles, the door-to-door PT journey is achievable via multiple transfers between and within different PT modes. As such, seamless transfers between different modes of public transportation become an increasingly important factor for the attractiveness of PT services. At the same time, recent developments in travel time prediction methodologies offer new, reliable data sources for the optimization of PT operations. This work, with the consideration of these two elements, develops a mixed integer linear programming model for the PT schedule synchronization problem. The novelty is threefold. First, a novel concept of path-oriented scheduling is proposed. The path transfer time is explicitly formulated and minimized to provide a seamless travel experience considering that the emerging multimodal mobility inevitably induces multiple transfers. Second, time-dependent travel time data is also utilized in the model, which allows us to harness new and more representative data sources for improving PT services. Third, in order to complement the increase in computational complexity as a result of the utilization of time-dependent travel time data, three novel valid inequalities (VIs) are derived. Numerical studies show that the use of time-dependent travel time data is beneficial in terms of reducing path transfer times, when compared to using the mean historical travel times. The numerical study also reveals a tradeoff between the maximum allowable path transfer time and trip time. Using simulation studies on three bus lines in Copenhagen, we demonstrate that the valid inequalities could reduce the computation time by 8.5% on average, where the maximum reduction of computation time could reach 54.0%. The proposed valid inequalities are benchmarked against two classes of valid inequalities in the literature. It is found that the proposed valid inequalities could outperform those in the literature. We also found that further improvement in computational performance can be attained by using a combination of the proposed valid inequalities.Signal Processing System

Computational structure analysis of multicomponent oxides
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Materials Science and Engineering, 2008.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Includes bibliographical references.First principles density functional theory (DFT) energy calculations combined with the cluster expansion and Monte Carlo techniques are used to understand the cation ordering patterns of multicomponent oxides. Specifically, the lithium ion battery cation material LiNi0.5Mn0.5O2 and the thermoelectric material P2-NaxCoO2 (0.5 =/< x =/< 1) are investigated in the course of this research. It is found that at low temperature the thermodynamically stable state of LiNi0.5Mn0.5O2 has almost no Li/Ni disorder between the Li-rich and transition metal-rich (TM) layer, making it most suitable for battery applications. Heating the material above ~600°C causes an irreversible transformation, which yields a phase with 10~12% Li/Ni disorder and partial disorder of cations in the TM layer. Phase diagrams for the NaxCoO2 system were derived from the results of calculations making use of both the Generalized Gradient Approximation (GGA) to DFT and GGA with Hubbard U correction (GGA+U). This enabled us to study how hole localization, or delocalization, on Co affects the ground states and order-disorder transition temperatures of the system. Comparison of ground states, c lattice parameter and Na1/Na2 ratio with experimental observations suggest that results from the GGA, in which the holes are delocalized, matches the experimental results better for 0.5 =/< x =/< 0.8. We also present several methodological improvements to the cluster expansions. An approach to limit phase space and methods to deal with multicomponent charge balance constrained open systems while including both weak, long-range electrostatic interactions and strong, short-range interactions in a single cluster expansion.by Yoyo Hinuma.Ph.D
