    Cult: A Composite Novel

    No full text
Cult (redacted) The first component of the thesis is a composite novel called Cult which falls into two parts with seven narratives in each. Part 1 tracks the protagonist, Ellen, from her first involvement with the cult through to her eventually leaving it. Although fiction, the first half of the book answers the kinds of questions the author is asked when people discover that she was once a sannyasin (a follower of the guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh). While the experiences of meditation, group therapy and communal living are all faithfully rendered within the stories, the need for strong characters, narrative drive and a lightness of touch takes precedence. Part 2 picks up Ellen’s story some twenty or so years later and explores what becomes of her in middle age. It also looks at other groups in society, such as academia, the law and the internet dating community which each have their own jargon, hierarchies, rituals and rules but are not considered to be cults. The book examines the question raised in the Epigraph, ‘how do we be together when we feel so alone’ with a focus on relationships other than the familial and the romantic. Collisions, Chasms and Connections: a Performative Exploration of the Composite Novel Form The second part of the thesis is both a critical and creative response to three contemporary American books: Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout; A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan; and Legend of a Suicide by David Vann. The critical element comprises a close reading of the three books; a chronological reconstruction of their overarching storylines; and a consideration of what their authors have said about writing the books. It concludes that, in the composite novel, the simultaneous presentation of multiple views and storylines operate much like a 3D image to give the impression of depth to the characters and situations rendered. The creative element of the essay is a playful and personal response to the texts

Denouncement, engagement and dialect: the Sicilian mystery novels of Leonardo Sciascia and Andrea Camilleri

    No full text
The genre of the mystery novel offers an ideal medium to analyze social injustice. The guise of criminal investigations allows for an examination of deviant behavior across diverse social strata and its causes and effects upon modern society. In theory, institutional justice in Italy extends equal rights and treatment to all citizens, irrespective of social standing or political affiliation. However, an analysis of criminal activity and the manner in which it is investigated and prosecuted reveals that this principle does not always hold true. These crimes--each a labyrinth of social and political connections, the daunting task of exposing those responsible and bringing them to justice within the framework of the legal system--constitute the plot of the Sicilian mystery novel. Despite the valiant and occasionally successful efforts of an investigator to solve these crimes, it is impossible to prosecute the guilty parties within the framework of the legal system. This break of the Sicilian mystery novel with the tradition of the genre prompted Italo Calvino to comment on "…the impossibility of the mystery novel within a Sicilian context" (Calvino, Foreword. To Each his Own). These mystery novels raise the question: What are the social phenomena unique to a Sicilian context that prevent institutionalized justice from being administered and what are the historical reasons responsible for such phenomena? When read as reflections of modern Sicilian society and the complex social problems that beleaguer it, the mystery novels of Leonardo Sciascia and Andrea Camilleri act as powerful tools of social denouncement. Through these novels their authors denounce the obscure web of connections and corruption that plagues not only Sicily but the Italian mainland as well. These mysteries reflect a society that is increasingly socially engaged, and they hint at the evolution of a collective moral consciousness in Sicily since Sciascia first published The Day of the Owl in 1961. This dissertation examines the innovative stylistic and thematic elements that make Sciascia and Camilleri’s literary contributions unique while reflecting the socially unjust cultural reality in which they were raised.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical references (p. 156-160)by Jennifer Hol

    No full text
The purpose of this research paper is to establish the syntactic-pragmatic elements of the ember chamí language used by an embera family with the aim of strengthening their intercultural communicative competence regarding native language teaching and learning processes within in urban contexts. To begin with, the embera chamí is a community that has become vulnerable in the city due to various factors: displacement, migration, overcrowding in the city, the imposition of alien cultural practices; along with a repetitive loss of sociocultural embera aspects, the linguistic detriment and the capitalization of traditional ways of life. Throughout the research those factors are conceived as transversal components that direct this project research reflection. The proposed conceptual framework is founded on two main theoretical approaches. On the one hand, the Communicative Approach proposed by Dell Hymes regarding two categories of analysis: Syntactic and pragmatic competences. On the other hand, the educational approach and intercultural perspective were incorporated; as well as the cultural symmetry concept suggested by Walsh. Hand in hand with the model proposed by Chen and Starosta, we directed the research towards a cultural sensitivity, understood from the intercultural communicative competence. As preliminary conclusions, there is a construction of the embera being in the city was evidenced and the sociocultural implications that this entail from the language value. The final considerations raised in this research point to the projection of a pedagogy and intercultural education that strengthen teaching and learning processes in the native language, immersed in an urban context. Therefore, the need for a proper linguistic and appropriate cultural education for the embera chami community is questioned, and where the socio-cultural construction of the embera is appealed as a social actor that responds to specific needs within the classroom

A Smoothing Proxy Service for Variable-Bit-Rate Streaming Video

    No full text
Provisioning network resources for multimedia streaming is complicated by the bursty, high-bandwidth traffic introduced by compressed video, as well as the variability of the throughput, delay, and loss properties of the Internet, and the lack of end-to-end control by any one service provider. To address these problems, we propose that proxies should perform online smoothing by transmitting frames into the client playback buffer in advance of each burst, to reduce network resource requirements without degradation in video quality. This paper describes the practical systems issues we have encountered in building a smoothing proxy service using off-the-shelf components, in the context of an MPEG-2/RTP streaming testbed.
