Classification of agricultural systems based on pesticide use intensity and safety

An analysis of socio-economic driving forces in crop protection is proposed to improve the implementation of sustainable strategies. The analysis includes: (1) a classification of agricultural systems based on pesticide use intensity and safety, (2) an evaluation of the profitability of farming systems and identification of socio-economic factors that influence pesticide use and (3) formulation of policy recommendations. We find that for cereals and for fruit trees alike, crop yields are much higher for agricultural systems with high doses of pesticides. The safety of applied pesticides does not affect crop protection costs significantly. For cropping systems characterised by low-intensity in pesticide use, the application of safer products has a positive effect on reduction of crop protection costs.pesticide use, driving forces in crop protection, economic analysis of agricultural systems, Crop Production/Industries,

Figuraciones sesgadas: teatralidad, intermedialidad y yo autoral en Cristina Rivera Garza

In the work of Mexican writer Cristina Rivera Garza (Matamoros, 1964), strategies of autofiction in lyric and narrative are frequently used. Although author itself has scrutinized on the affordances and contradictions of writings of the self, especially in her essay The Restless Dead (2020), scholarship hasn’t work on it enough. In this article I study how self-representation are mediated through intermedial references in Rivera Garza’s books. In the first section, after discussing the relevance of self-representation as a problem in the lyric, I analyze its forms in both La más mía (1998) and La imaginación pública (2015) to locate a critical reflection on the self. In the second section, I consider the reference to author’s grandmother in Autobiografía del algodón (2020) as an oblique thinking on writing and its material conditions.

Assessing Land Degradation (SDG 15.3) in Latin America: Western Coast of Mexico

    No full text
Latin American countries face extreme challenges in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) due to inequalities in access to information and economic resource allocation and a lack of effective political management. While Mexico is active in terms of the SDGs, the SDG related to land degradation has not been met. In 2015, Mexico ranked third in Latin America for the largest area of degraded land (47%), reducing the potential productivity of the soil, increasing arid lands, and compromising biological and/or economic productivity. This case study analyzes the Tomatlán Basin (257,915 ha) to evaluate the influence of agriculture on land degradation from 2000 to 2020 using the open-access tool Trends.Earth, which calculates trends in vegetation productivity and soil organic carbon changes using the global inputs MODIS and SoilGrids, respectively. Land cover transitions were calculated with regional inputs, and land cover maps were generated with Landsat imagery and the Dzetsaka classification tool in QGIS. The results show improvement in land conditions due to increased vegetation productivity related to ecological succession processes on 207,000 ha (80.6% of the territory), which is nine times larger than degraded territory (23,172 ha), indicating progress toward the 15.3 SDG target. The results were validated by using Google Earth Pro to identify degraded areas, achieving 92.5% accuracy. Trends.Earth is a useful tool for monitoring land degradation at different scales in countries with limited information and economic resources, allowing the identification of degraded areas so that appropriate practices and activities can be implemented.Fil: Sanchez Casanova, D..

The aim of this paper is to investigate the figure of Juan Rivera, a Spanish translator working during the Liberal Triennium, through the analysis of prefaces he added to his three translations of important Enlightenment texts one of them being On Crimes and Punishments by Cesare Beccaria Bonesana. Since much of its fortune depended on the reception of its translations, first of all the French one by André Morellet, this paper analyses other translators’ prefaces, namely that of Morellet himself, the first anonymous English translation and the first Spanish one, in order to highlight correlations between the historical and political context and the translation method employed. Morellet, for instance, transformed the philosophical Italian essay into a legal treatise as he was guided by the idea of writing a useful tool for the French Nation and the whole of humanity, as he declared in his “Preface of the translator”. Juan Rivera, author of the second translation into Spanish of On Crimes and Punishments, seems to have followed his example: in his “Preface” he declared a manifest willingness to influence the political debate of his age (the Liberal Triennium, 1820-23) and, more precisely, to offer a useful instrument to legislators who were about to approve the first Spanish Criminal Code. He did the same with the two other translations he published in the same short liberal period, and with the same publisher (Imprenta de D. Fermín Villalpando), that is, the Spanish translations of Scienza della legislazione (The Science of Legislation) by Gaetano Filangieri and the Traité d’économie politique, by Jean-Baptiste Say, in this case, from French. Through the analysis of some passages from peritextual items, such as prefaces and open letters addressed to the Spanish National Congress, we attempt to draw the profile of this activist translator operating during an age full of optimistic expectations of the progress of society

Structure of a bacterial type IV secretion core complex at subnanometre resolution

Type IV secretion (T4S) systems are able to transport DNAs and/or proteins through the membranes of bacteria. They form large multiprotein complexes consisting of 12 proteins termed VirB1-11 and VirD4. VirB7, 9 and 10 assemble into a 1.07 MegaDalton membrane-spanning core complex (CC), around which all other components assemble. This complex is made of two parts, the O-layer inserted in the outer membrane and the I-layer inserted in the inner membrane. While the structure of the O-layer has been solved by X-ray crystallography, there is no detailed structural information on the I-layer. Using high-resolution cryo-electron microscopy and molecular modelling combined with biochemical approaches, we determined the I-layer structure and located its various components in the electron density. Our results provide new structural insights on the CC, from which the essential features of T4S system mechanisms can be derived
