MicroRNAs and bone metastasis: a new challenge

    No full text
The development of bone metastases requires multistep and multicellular machinery consisting not only of processes shared with any type of metastases (formation of a pre-metastatic niche, chemotaxis of tumor cells into the host tissue, tumor cells escape from the microvasculature), but also biological interactions that are strictly related to the particular bone microenvironment (bone marrow colonization by cancer cells, osteomimicry, deregulation of bone homeostasis). MiRNAs are highly conserved, small RNAs molecules that regulate gene expression. The functional consequence of miRNA deregulation lies in the mRNA targets whose expression is altered. MiRNA networks acting as upstream regulators of these genes interfere with the initial steps of tumor local invasion and cancer cell intravasation, mainly by regulating the epithelial-mesenchymal transition, the motility, invasiveness and survival abilities of these cells. The miRNA-mediated regulation on the steps of bone tropism, anchorage, homing and finally bone colonization is more tissue specific, being dependent on the expression pattern of target miRNAs in bone marrow sinusoids, bone cells and microenvironment. In that, miRNA specific expression signatures that can distinguish between primary tumors from their corresponding bone metastases might be determinants of clinical aggressiveness. In this review, we focus on the current advances on functions and molecular mechanisms by which miRNAs exert their biological roles in regulating bone metastases development

THE FAMILY TELEPHONE Martine Segalen This article evaluates the role of the telephone in family relations between three generations. Noting the existence of both the « duty to call » and « not to call », the author highlights the fact that no other household appliance conveys so much emotion. Whereas some people react to the telephone with loathing, others see it as a source of pleasure.LE TELEPHONE DES FAMILLES Martine Segalen L'article tente d'évaluer le rôle du téléphone dans les relations familiales établies entre trois générations. Family spirit in Nanterre, Martine Segalen. Using a study describing family relations in an urban environment in Nanterre (Hauts-de-Seine), 1840 to 1980, the author, as an anthropologist demonstrates that between the masses and the individuals the family played a singularly complex and strong part. In that old industrial suburb, destined to massive immigration and to the change from manufacturing to services, family networks stimulated solidarity and sociability. The family, between the couple and the relatives, has never been the secret chilly refuge of self-centered individuals.Segalen Martine. L'esprit de famille à Nanterre. MARTINE MULLER In 1967, a new public institution was formed : "L'Agence Nationale pour l'Emploi" (The National Employment Agency). It replaces the "Bureaux de placement" (employment agencies). The author studies how its tasks are defined, and what constraints it has towards its "employer", the State. The article ties together the political debate and the first moments of its implementation.Résumé : En 1967, une nouvelle institution publique est crée, l'Agence nationale pour l'emploi. This dissertation is the result of long research work carried out under the supervision of Professor Pierre-Alain Croset of the Politecnico di Milano and Professor Martine Weissmann of the Ensa- Paris-Val de Seine. Thanks to a double degree agreement between the two universities, I had the opportunity to spend a year in each town, which I believe has greatly enriched my education. This work is therefore aimed at “collecting the seeds” scattered during this journey. The goal is to ponder on the issues and problems that characterise the contemporary city, the role of nature in the city, the question of the open city and the role played by open spaces. The contemporary city is seen as a complex organism no longer attributable to a single, spatially limited and homogeneous entity, but traversed by boundaries that are as invisible as they are difficult to cross and characterised by a fragmentary nature that is the result of multiple and legitimate rationalities often simply juxtaposed to one another. It is a wide, diffuse city, encompassing landscapes, agriculture, human activities, infrastructures and living places. Designing today’s city, particularly the contemporary European city, means dealing with complex settlement systems that need to be understood, not only for the problems they have created, but for the collective capital they represent (energetic, spatial, cultural...). Most of this work come from from some considerations developed in Paris during the first semester of the academic year 2021-22 (semester 9) with my colleague Michela Botti and under the supervision of professors and architects Martine Weissmann and Jean Mas. We chose to work on the city of Marseille, specifically Le Crottes’, a neighbourhood located in the northern part of the city. It is a forgotten area, where, while waiting for an intervention, abandoned factories and buildings have been walled up, leaving empty spaces of neglect. The study area is extremely large and complex. For this reason, in semester 9 we concentrated mainly on the northern part of the site. Differently from it, this final thesis is an individual work that takes up the previous work, but focuses mainly on the southern part of the plot in. In addition to the more general issues that characterise contemporary cities, there are some dynamics and problems specific to the area in question. In France today, there is a growing demand for “logements”, which in Marseille, as in Paris, leads to the realisation of numerous projects, often at extremely high densities, where the size and distances between buildings often affect the quality of living and disregard the specific characteristics of the sites where they are located.. “Rediscovering the sea” is therefore an invitation to rethink the relationships between natural and artificial rationalities, between buildings and open spaces, imagining strategies of adaptation and mitigation to climate change, not overlapping the geographical surface but forming a unified environmental and urban system with it. From a strictly methodological point of view, starting with a careful analysis of the site and its surroundings, an attempt was made to understand its main strengths and weaknesses. Once the main design intentions had been defined, both on an urban and architectural level, the strategy through which they were to be pursued was defined in order to arrive at the construction of a possible future scenario. This thesis therefore aims to summarise the entire process that led to the definition of a specific scenario and to provide a solid basis to accompany the reading of the project itself. The idea is to start with a presentation of the site and some initial more general considerations on the city of Marseilles, and then explain the intentions of the project. In particular, an attempt has been made not only to give space to the more technical and scientific analyses and research that have been carried out, but also to start from what is the perception of spaces and environments today. Walking around the site, discovering it, through the 5 senses, analysing it. Trying to convey emotions and sensations to better understand the intentions and strategy that will lead, in the final chapters, to the ‘rediscovery’ of the site

This article examines the phenomena of division and codification into masculin and féminin roles between lesbians during the 50ies in the USA and highlights the part of the given political and social environment in the construction of identity. The author dissociates from the prevailing conception of these phenomena as a reproduction as a heterosexual society and accounts for the masculinity of « hutches » as a straight response to a repressive regime.Caraglio Martine.

The Martine series by Gilbert Delahaye and Marcel Marlier strikingly lacks critical attention, when compared to the immensity of its commercial success. Industrially produced in the context of a massification of young children’s literature, these serial picturebooks testify to the technical modernity of Casterman, to whom they offer a considerable windfall. The Casterman archives, deposited in the State Archives in Tournai, thus offer a fascinating insight into the making of the serial picturebook. The publishing house’s sales statistics and Marcel Marlier’s author file allow us to follow the progressive and paradoxical affirmation of authorship within the framework of a mass collection. As an illustrator of mass-produced picturebooks, Marlier was a commissioned worker for Casterman, whose fortune he nevertheless made. Paid on a flat-rate basis, Marlier gradually switched to copyright; the considerable success of the visual universe he created with Martine ended up, through a contamination effect, in the rest of the “Farandole” collection. The editorial enonciation was gradually replaced by the unexpected rise of a visual authorship
