Interpretation of user’s feedback in human-robot interaction
In this paper we will propose the use of social robots as interface between users and services in a Smart Environment. We will focus on the need for a robot to recognize the user’s feedback, in order to respond and revise its behaviour according to user’s needs. As we believe speech is a natural and immediate input channel in human-robot interaction, we will discuss the importance of recognising, besides the linguistic content of the spoken sentence, the attitude of the user towards the robot and the environment. In this way, the meaning of the user dialog will be made clear when hardly recognisable by the analysis of the utterance structure. Then, we will present the results of the application of a potential approach used for integrating the linguistic analysis with the recognition of the valence and arousal of the user’s utterance. In order to achieve this goal, we collected and analysed a corpus of data to build an interpretation model based on a Bayesian network. Then we tested the accuracy of the model using a test dataset. Results will show that the integration of the linguistic content with the recognition of some acoustic features of spoken sentences perform better in recognising the key aspects of user’s feedback
Agent-Based Home Simulation and Control
In this paper, we propose an approach to the simulation of control of an intelligent home aiming at understanding which is the impact of embedded and pervasive technology on people daily life. In this vision, the house is seen as an intelligent environment made up of independent and distributed devices interacting to support user's goals and tasks. Achieving this aim requires giving, to these intelligent artifacts, an appropriate level of autonomy, distribution, adaptation, proactiveness, etc. Therefore, in some way, they share the same characteristics as agents. C@sa is a multiagent system aiming at modeling, controlling and simulating house behavior according to user and context features
A Group Adaptive System in Public Environments
This paper presents a methodology and an experience for building group-adaptive systems. To test
our approach, we developed a system, called GAIN (Group Adapted Interaction for News), able to provide
background information and news adapted to group of users in a public environment. Starting from different
hypotheses on the different knowledge level of the group members, the proposed system has been developed
using initially a group model that has been built from a preliminary user study based on a statistical approach.
Next, on the base of the hypothesis that the system has access to the user profile of some group members, the
environment sets up the model of the group interests mixing individual preferences with a probabilistic
prevision of unknown group members
Social robots as mediators between users and smart environments
In this paper we propose a model for the use of a social robot as mediator between the user and a smart environment. Since the speech is considered one of the more natural and immediate input channel in human-robot interaction we discuss the importance of recognizing both the linguistic content of the spoken sentence and the tone valence of the user voice in order to infer properly the user’s communication aim during the interaction
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
