Parallel Implosion. Densità, intimità e spazio pubblico
Get PDFForty years from now, we will reach the threshold of 10 billion inhabitants and 75% of the world population will live an urban existence. Hyper-density and hyper-expansion of housing is already encouraging experimentation of different corporeal scales, modifying the customary proportions to which our bodies have adapted. Tokyo has adapted the capsule hypothesised by Kenzo Tange, Kisho Kurokawa and Toyo Ito, where density and intimacy represent a design and temporal synthesis, encouraging new architectural and planning transformations such as the manga kissa, karoke box and love hotel. In this scenario, the thesis sets out to identify the real conditions which favour the simultaneous presence of the individual sphere and the "culture of congestion" theorised by Rem Koolhaas. Two antithetic realities, the first of isolation, similar to a nest moulded by the weight of the body; the second chaotic, saturated and intricate. The study is organised into an initial theoretical analysis, followed by empirical investigation through two case studies of uninterrupted efficacy - the Tsukiji fish market and the Jimbocho city of books. The considerations deriving from the direct analysis and documentation acquired define a number of characteristics in common to the cases observed. Both markets are formed by the assembly of compressed, modelled micro-architecture around an intimate and personal space for consumption, proposing hybrid formal/informal systems located in the pulsating heart of the largest megalopolis. Finally, the transformation process has successfully merged the social-cultural archetypes and components of a postmodern metropolis into the same urban context. They become strategies, hypotheses, postulates and soft operations to transform the immeasurable to adapt the small in which the two antithetic dimensions coincide. L’iper-densità e l’iper-estensione abitativa sta già favorendo la sperimentazione di differenti scalarità corporali, modificando le consuete proporzioni a cui i nostri corpi si sono adattati. In questo scenario l’obiettivo della tesi è l’individuazione di realtà che favoriscano la compresenza fra l’intimità della sfera individuale e la densità della congestione metropolitana. Due condizioni opposte, la prima d’isolamento e simile alla forma di un nido plasmata dal peso del corpo mentre la seconda è caotica, satura e intricata. L’investigazione si struttura in un’analisi teorica prima ed una successiva indagine empirica attraverso due casi studio identificati nella metropoli più densa al mondo, Tokyo, il mercato ittico, Tsukiji, e la città dei libri di Jimbocho. Le considerazioni derivanti dall’analisi diretta e dalla documentazione acquisita delineano alcune caratteristiche che accomunano i casi osservati: entrambi i mercati si compongono dall’assemblaggio di micro-architetture, modellate attorno allo spazio intimo e personale del consumo proponendo un sistema ibrido fra formale ed informale, sono localizzati nel cuore pulsante della maggiore megalopoli del Giappone, infine il processo di trasformazione è riuscito a fondere nello stesso contesto urbano archetipi socio-culturali e componenti di una metropoli postmoderna. I termini densità ed intimità non sono posti in antitesi ma risultano come sintesi progettuale: una soffice operazione di trasformazione dello smisurato per adattarvici il piccolo può far collimare le due dimensioni antitetiche in cui si trova inserito l’uomo della metropol
"Anticipating the Impossible"
No full textIl Monumento è termine lontano e desueto. L’obiettivo della ricerca avviata nei laboratori Re-cycle, illuminando i prodotti delle disgregazioni contemporanee, persegue la volontà di ri-destare la Meraviglia come sostanza prima del Neo-monumento. Le due condizioni antitetiche, gli scarti e l’incertezza vs monumento e meraviglia, divengono pertanto normali o iniziali per la verifica di strategie progettuali o processi (ri)generativi colti tra la spettacolarizzazione delle previsioni di Guy Debord e l’efficacia del dislocamento delle proiezioni dei “Generators” di Cedric Price.
Un caso studio doppio, dove scale d’intervento opposte, quella minuta di Muggia, primo comune litorale adriatico italiano, e dall’altra parte del golfo di Trieste la città navale di Monfalcone, propongono una visione eccezionale del dubbio tra il compiacimento di dispositivi balneari e paesaggistici e l’instabilità della bigness di aree industriali ciclicamente in dismissione e rilancio.
Progetti e mappe, strumenti che articolano i temi dei corsi e laboratori condotti nei tre anni della ricerca Re-Cycle, hanno fatto emergere quattro aspetti principali attraverso cui passa il rilancio progettuale e programmatico del litorale immaginato. Il primo è quello dell’infrastruttura, la struttura osteologia primaria che si sviluppa fra terra e acqua. Il secondo è lo sviluppo esasperato del tessuto urbano volto ad assecondare l’andamento costiero. Il terzo, qui centrale, si riferisce agli spazi del lavoro intesi come grandi fabbriche industriali e sociali per lo più ora diventate rovine di un’economia navale prima in trasformazione, poi in abbandono e di nuovo di cocente attualità. Questo fenomeno, definito dai repentini cicli di espansione e contrazione economica, ha segnato fortemente il paesaggio e necessita un approccio progettuale quanto mai urgente nel re-cycling ovvero up-cycling di paesaggi frantumati. Infine, correlato, i luoghi incerti delle trasformazioni antropiche del paesaggio stesso, inaspettatamente colonizzati da una natura ri-adattata: paradossalmente, una resilienza naturale che “anticipa l’impossibile” (C.Price), ritmi biologici estensivi, modelli analogici per le neo eterotopie degli spazi (altri?) della città contemporanea

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
