No full textNeste artigo, pretendo estabelecer diálogos entre o filme Ngwenya, o crocodilo, de Isabel Noronha, e o livro O beijo da palavrinha, de Mia Couto, ilustrado pelo pintor Malangatana Valente. No filme de Isabel Noronha, que pode ser classificado como docdrama, Malangatana Valente torna-se personagem e ator de sua própria história, tecendo, por meio de seus relatos, de suas pinturas, das histórias de sua família e amigos, sua biografia e a história de Moçambique. Ao fim do documentário, o escritor Mia Couto comenta a respeito da obra de Malangatana: “E na sua pintura, há ali um convite para a gente sonhar. Sonhar sem barreiras, sonhar a cor”. A partir dessa afirmação, debruço-me sobre o texto e as ilustrações de O beijo da palavrinha, para, então, compreender a atmosfera onírica das telas e das palavras, refletindo acerca da narrativa de Mia Couto e das ilustrações de Malangatana Valente

Daughter of fortune: Isabel Allende's popularity from a readership perspective
No full textThe primary aim of this thesis is to explore and critically interrogate Isabel Allende’s popularity cross-culturally in Britain and Spain. It analyses readers’ responses to Allende’s works as well as the discourses surrounding her public representation, an approach that is ‘readerly’ but must also take account of production and text. This approach is intended to further the understanding of Allende’s work which so far has always been analysed from a textual perspective. However, the relationship between Allende’s popularity, her texts, public representation and readers has not been yet analysed in detail.This thesis is innovative in other ways too. Methodologically, it approaches readers through the under studied cultural form of the reading group. It also incorporates a comparative dimension by looking at the reception of Allende in two different cultural contexts: the British and Spanish respectively. Finding out about Allende’s popularity has involved asking readers about their reading experiences as well as analysing the production of discourses around her public representation. Paul Ricoeur’s (1984, 1988) perspective on authorial intentions and readers’ responses to texts helps in understanding the intricacies surrounding what is involved in reading any text. It draws attention to Allende’s and her publishers’ authorial strategies, her ‘strategies of persuasion’ and the specificity of the lives and contexts of British and Spanish reading publics. Equally, this ‘readerly’ approach draws on feminist audience research and primarily on the work of Ien Ang and Janice Radway. Their work with viewers and readers respectively is particularly useful in establishing and developing methodological parameters for the study of reading groups. As a whole, this thesis contributes to the understanding of Allende’s cross-cultural popularity by situating readers at the centre

Este suplemento panamericano veio a público entre 1941 e 1949, no entanto a pesquisa aqui apresentada focalizou o período que compreendeu desde seu início até 1945, representativo marco do final da segunda Guerra Mundial e do Estado Novo. A primazia do enfoque recaiu sobre o estudo de mecanismos editoriais que permearam uma publicação oficial, bem como sobre a relação estabelecida entre os intelectuais acima apontados e o governo estadonovista. Abstract : This dissertation purpose is to study the editorial activity of Rui Ribeiro Couto and Renato Costa Almeida while these intellectuals were editors of a publication linked to the newspaper of Estado Novo (A Manhã). This publication was called Pensamento da America and was a monthly pan-American journal published between 1941 and 1949. However, this research focused on the period between 1941 and 1945, year that represents the end of the Second World War and the end of the Estado Novo. The focus was on the study of mechanisms that permeated the edition of an official publication, as well as on the relation between these intellectuals and the Estado Novo

No full textDissertação de mestrado em Tradução - variante Inglês-Português, apresentada à Fac. de Letras da Univ. de CoimbraO presente estudo visa identificar e analisar os problemas inerentes à tradução do romance A Varanda do Frangipani para língua inglesa, tendo-se também realizado uma breve descrição da obra e uma contextualização da respectiva publicação em Portugal e no Reino Unido. A criatividade linguística de Mia Couto explora amplamente os recursos e a plasticidade da língua portuguesa, o que coloca ao tradutor britânico, David Brookshaw, problemas relacionados com a transposição dessa criatividade para uma língua não românica, cujo funcionamento morfológico, fonológico, semântico e gramatical é bastante diferente do funcionamento da língua portuguesa. No presente estudo abordam-se os problemas identificados pelo tradutor, nomeadamente a utilização de neologismos, jogos de palavras e trocadilhos, bem como a presença de aspectos de cariz cultural. Identificam-se ainda alguns aspectos não referidos pelo tradutor, nomeadamente o hibridismo linguístico e a utilização de palavras moçambicanas. Cada um dos aspectos identificados é exemplificado e são analisadas as diversas estratégias de tradução utilizadas.The current study identifies and analyses the problems that arise when translating the romance A Varanda do Frangipani into English, providing a brief description of the story and the context for its edition both in Portugal and the UK. Mia Couto‟s linguistic creativity widely explores the resources and the plasticity of the Portuguese language, which poses the British translator, David Brookshaw, problems associated with the transposition of that kind of creativity into English, a non romance language, whose structure – morphologic, phonologic, semantic and grammatical – is very different from Portuguese. The current study analyses the problems identified by the translator, namely the use of neologisms, word-plays and puns, as well as the presence of cultural aspects. Some other aspects not referenced by the translator were also identified, namely linguistic hybridity and the use of Mozambican words. Examples were given of each of these aspects, providing an analysis of the various translation strategies used

Mia Couto and the enchantment of rain
No full textIn his preface to Rain and Other Stories, Mia Couto refers to the remaking of the world following the Mozambican civil war: ‘we soak our faces in this rain of hope, this water of benedreamtion’. Pluvial rain, as Nuttall terms it, can bring huge destruction, as can drought, its absence. Scholars have insisted on the agency of water, including African ecocritics who argue for an ‘animist conception of the world’ which transposes and transgresses boundaries and identities. Garuba specifically refers to the ‘persistent re-enchantment of the world’ whereby the ‘rational and scientific are appropriated and transformed into the mystical and magical’. This article explores the range of roles, agentic and enchanted, which Couto accords rain in his stories. Although he rejected the label ‘magic realist’, his translator Chabal argues that in his stories the fantastic ‘transmutes the fictitious into the factual’ so that ‘all boundaries are put into question’: between past and present, far and near, material and spiritual. And he seeks to regain the ‘brotherhood’, the ‘relation’, the ‘link between nature and humanity’. Ashcroft says Couto’s vision as a writer is to ‘give back to the word its divine power … the power to enchant things, be these trees, birds, or landscapes’. Samuelson too claims that Couto’s stories ‘invoke an enlivening ecocritical method’ that draws readers into a ‘sacred web’, an ‘indivisible body, an ‘interconnected world’. While the notion of enchantment is not unproblematic, the interconnections it entails between human and environment, material and spiritual, generate a receptive matrix in which to understand and recognise the agency of rain.
Contribution: This article engages with ecocritical readings of the stories of Mia Couto by examining his treatment of rain and his approach to the issue of enchantment. It thus contributes to criticism of his work as well as to the growing field of ecocriticism in this country

No full textO referido trabalho é uma análise das crônicas A velha e a aranha e Lixo, Lixado de Mia Couto, expoente escritor moçambicano, tem como objetivo principal perceber como o autor representa a identidade do povo moçambicano através de suas memórias. A vida dos personagens no contexto da obra também é analisada, estabelecendo-se um paralelo com a realidade moçambicana, percebe-se que a linguagem que Mia Couto utiliza nos seus escritos é importante nessa tarefa de representação identitária. A pesquisa é bibliográfica, sustentada pelas teorias de identidade e de memória individual e cultural de Stuart Hall, Roger Bastide, Maurice Halbwachs, dentre outros. Mia Couto constrói nas duas crônicas estudadas, as relações identitárias e de memória do povo africano, através da construção de seus personagens

No full textO presente relatório de estágio incide sobre a Prática Educativa Supervisionada desenvolvida no âmbito do Mestrado em Educação Pré-Escolar e Ensino do 1.º Ciclo do Ensino Básico, tendo como base a metodologia de Investigação-Ação. A intervenção da mestranda decorreu em dois contextos educativos distintos: uma sala de Educação Pré-Escolar e uma turma do 1.º ano do Ensino Básico, permitindo uma abordagem holística do processo de ensino-aprendizagem. Este documento resulta da partilha de saberes e do trabalho colaborativo com o par pedagógico, os orientadores cooperantes e as supervisoras institucionais. Este diálogo sustentou-se nos referenciais teóricos e legais que
valorizam a criança como sujeito ativo na construção do conhecimento, tendo como princípios orientadores a intencionalidade pedagógica, a escuta ativa e o envolvimento das famílias. Para que tal fosse possível, a mestranda recorreu à Metodologia de Trabalho de Projeto, à Aprendizagem Cooperativa e ao modelo de Rotação por Estações que promoveram a participação ativa das crianças, tendo em conta as suas especificidades e a articulação entre os diversos agentes educativos. A
intervenção pedagógica refletiu uma constante adaptação às necessidades e interesses das crianças, assegurando a equidade, a inclusão e o desenvolvimento de competências transversais como a autonomia, a criatividade e a cidadania. A reflexão crítica e metacognitiva realizada pela mestranda sobre o percurso desenvolvido revelou-se determinante para a consolidação da sua identidade profissional, evidenciando um compromisso com uma prática docente ética, reflexiva, colaborativa e centrada na criança, em consonância com os princípios de uma educação de qualidade, que se quer inclusiva e transformadora.This internship reportfocuses on the Supervised Educational Practice developed within the scope of the Master's Degree in Preschool Education and Primary School Teaching, based on the Action Research methodology. The master's student's intervention took place in two distinct educational settings: a Preschool classroom and a first-grade Primary School class, allowing for a holistic approach to the teaching-learning process. This document results from the sharing of knowledge and collaborative work with the teaching partner, cooperating mentors, and institutional supervisors.
This dialogue was grounded in theoretical and legal frameworks that value the child as an active subject in the construction of knowledge, guided by pedagogical intentionality, active listening, and family involvement. To achieve this, the student applied the Project-Based Learning Methodology, Cooperative Learning, and the Station Rotation Model, which promoted children's active participation, taking into account their specific needs and the collaboration among various educational agents. The pedagogical intervention reflected a continuous adaptation to the children's needs and interests, ensuring equity, inclusion, and the development of transversal skills such as autonomy, creativity, and citizenship. The master's student's criticai and metacognitive reflection on the journey undertaken proved essential for the consolidation of her professional identity, demonstrating a commitment to an ethical, reflective, collaborative, and child-centered teaching practice, aligned with the principies of quality education that is inclusive and transformative
