Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Roel Coutinho: Director of the Centre for Infectious Disease Control Netherlands [interview]
No full textIn 2005, Roel Coutinho became the first director of the Netherlands' new national coordination centre for infectious diseases. After graduating in medicine in 1972 from Amsterdam University, and a sojourn as a physician in tropical medicine in Senegal and Guinea-Bissau, Coutinho returned to the Netherlands to specialise as a medical microbiologist. Coutinho joined the Municipal Health Service of Amsterdam in 1977 as the head of the Public Health Department, where in 1984 he completed a PhD on sexually transmitted diseases among men who have sex with men. He was one of the founders of the Amsterdam cohort studies. In 1989, Coutinho was appointed Professor in the Epidemiology and Prevention of Infectious Diseases at the Academic Medical Center, University of Amsterdam. In 2000 he became General Director of the Municipal Health Service of Amsterdam, a post he occupied until joining the RIVM (National Institute for Public Health and the Environment) in 2005. Roel Coutinho has contributed to more than 450 international publications. Since 2000 he has been a coeditor of the international scientific journal AIDS. He has two children and two grandchildren

No full textUnavailable.Texto inédito de Carlos Nelson Coutinho, que integra o projeto em que se dedicava – a escrita de História da Filosofia, em dois volumes, resultado de um curso sobre filosofia por ele ministrado na década de 1990. O texto em questão, que tem por título “História da Filosofia – o renascimento”, foi escolhido pela necessidade premente de retomarmos as reflexões a respeito do renascimento e dos valores difundidos pelos filósofos que abarcam aquela quadra histórica, entre eles as ideias de autonomia e dignidade do homem, bases para a compreensão, segundo o autor, de que “a ideia renascentista de que o homem é livre, de que pode por seu esforço e seus méritos elevar-se socialmente e desenvolver sua personalidade, num mundo infinitamente aberto, é a expressão teórica de possibilidades reais contidas na economia mercantil burguesa”. Da extensa gama dos filósofos renascentistas, Carlos Nelson Coutinho se ocupa dos mais significativos, que vão desde Nicolau de Cusa, neoplatônicos e neoaristotélicos, Maquiavel, Giordano Bruno, Bacon a Galileu, no sentido de historicizar e problematizar valores e ideias que forjaram, resguardadas suas diferentes perspectivas, a filosofia burguesa subsequente. Coutinho afirma nesse ensaio que “O importante a destacar é que renascentistas e ‘modernos’ se situam no horizonte do que poderíamos chamar de filosofia burguesa, ou seja, da filosofia que expressa – de múltiplos e diferenciados modos, a depender dos contextos históricos e nacionais – a concepção de mundo da nova classe, cuja práxis e cujos valores vão determinar as principais características da chamada modernidade”. Essas reflexões são extremamente pertinentes ao pensarmos os valores e princípios que conformaram o projeto da modernidade e da razão dialética, bem como as disputas teóricas, político-ideológicas e filosóficas em torno do referido projeto
Flesh for the Author: Filmic Presence in the Documentaries of Eduardo Coutinho
Full text linkThis essay examines the questions of authorship and national cinema through the concept of filmic presence. Drawing from Tom Gunning’s valorization of “instants” and “presentation” in the cinema of attractions and from Deleuze’s “cinema of bodies,” the essay studies self-inscription through the director’s photographic image. Key to this analysis is Barthes’s idea of authorial figuration, which privileges physical presence over self-expression.
The object of this investigation is the work of Brazilian documentarian Eduardo Coutinho, who in the past decade has revised the role of sociologist that once defined Latin American filmmakers by shunning interpretation and analysis. Coutinho stresses the encounter between camera and subject, structuring his documentaries as talking heads. In this scenario, the author functions as a catalyst inspiring specific “performances” and narratives. By the same token, Coutinho’s documentaries emphasise the subjects’ body language, syntax and accent. Narrative and self-expression are thus replaced by process and presence

It can be used for testing mathematical formulations and algorithms for solving the GRTOP. This dataset has been artificially generated based on risk maps of flooding-prone cities across the UK.
