This dissertation focuses on statistical image and signal processing.Three main approaches are developed. In the first approach, based on Markov models, we consider pixel-level dependencies to bring out large-scale structures, in order to solve image segmentation and/or deconvolution problems. The second model is formulated as an off-the-grid sparse optimization problem and considers directly the object of interest. It is used to solve image deconvolution and analysis problems. The third representation, based on time-frequency transforms, opts for a denser approach to representations, and we focus on the practical and theoretical properties of these transforms.Throughout the dissertation, we are particularly interested in developing approaches that are explicable, both from a mathematical point of view, but also for the non-specialist user. Indeed, most of the work presented here has been carried out together with specialists from other disciplines. In the last part of the document, we propose a few lines of research that extend and link the proposed models.
Statistical hyperspectral image processing for diffuse object detection : application to the astronomical images from the spectro-imager MUSE
The main application of these works is the detection of large-scale structures in MUSE astronomical hyperspectral images, namely haloes (localized and homogenous in images) and filaments (anisotropie large-scale structures). First, we study the hypothesis-testing detection in hyperspectral images, based on spatial and spectral shape constraints as well as similarity constraints. Then, we introduce a pairwise Markov field model which allows the formulation of the detection problem as a special case of the segmentation problem while introducing a Markovian prior on the result. Next , in order to model onented structures m images, we propose a triplet Markov field model following the ià1ntsegmentation of orientations and classes in images. Finally, we study the modelling of large-scale structures in images by introducing a triplet Markov tree model handling inter-resolution dependancy jointly with homogeneity within resolutions. The two latter models were introduced in the general framework of image segmentation. Each model was validated with respect toits alternatives, then all models were compared on synthetic data in the context of detection within astronomical hyperspectral images. Finally, this document presents the analysis of the results on real MUSE images
This thesis focuses on the problem of unsupervised segmentation of fluorescent microscopy images of vinewood infected with Esca. The under investigation images are characterized by the presence of a fluorescent filamentary pathogen and a textured background that exhibits autofluorescence. These images suffer from blur, a phenomenon caused by a convolution between the observed sample and the Point Spread Function (PSF) of the microscope. This blur occurs mainly in areas where the pathogen is not situated on the focal plane. We present a joint segmentation deconvolution method based on the triplet Markov random field model. This method allows for taking into account a varying blur during segmentation, modeled using a Gaussian field. The proposed model returns both the labels and a blur map. This model has been compared to other Markov models, the pairwise and hidden Markov random field models. Additionally, it has been compared to a filtering method from the state-of-the-art. The results indicate that the proposed triplet model is highly efficient and surpasses these other models. Moreover, this unsupervised method is also compared to two other supervised architectures, namely random forests and U-Net. This model has shown performances as good as the ones achieved by the trained models

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Gaussian Unit-simplex Markov random fields as a fast proxy for MRF sampling
Markov random fields are classical models for Bayesian image modeling, but their sampling relies on traditionally Gibbs techniques, implying a non-negligible computational cost. On the other hand, Gaussian Markov random fields (GMRF), which are used to model continuous and spatially homogeneous variables, can benefit from highly efficient sampling techniques. In this paper, we propose a new discrete Markov field, based on a unit-simplex geometry, and coined Gaussian unit simplex Markov field (GUM). This model is specifically designed to benefit from the GMRF approach for sampling. We show that its sampling complexity is related to the GMRF sampling complexity. Numerical results show this leverages drastic improvement in the sampling time, while sharing similar empirical properties with a classical Markov random field
Pairwise and Hidden Markov Random Fields in Image Segmentation
International audienceThe purpose of this paper is to identify the similarities and differences between two image restoration approaches based on Markov field modeling. The first one is the well-known Bayesian approach which models the unknowns with a Markovian prior. In the second approach, as proposed by Pieczynski and Tebbache [1], the pair unknowns-observations as a whole is considered Markovian. The two approaches are compared based on their posterior distribution, synthetic results and real examples, when applied to the segmentation of degraded images
