Open Access digital institutional repositories have motivated a strong debate on electronic publishing in specialized literature. More focused on questions related to the so called Open Access Movement of the Scientific Information, they have raised discussions both in the context of the academy and the government and the industry (this related to the scientific publication work). It is subject, therefore, of constant concern of all the scientific community actors, to name scientific authors (researchers), publishers, scientific societies, funding agencies, libraries and access and service providers. The text deals with university institutional repositories focusing some of the main questions that guide the discussions of the subject. It emphasizes the impact of research aspects and motivation that certainly is part of their dissemination on the Web, and it reflects a scientific community reaction to the business model of the scientific publishing companies

From theoretical reflections, the institutional repositories are discussed under the prism of the scientific knowledge management, both the point of view of knowledge conversion model (Nonaka and Takeuchi, 1997) and the basic processes of knowledge management. One suggests that the institutional repositories appear both as alternative to speed up the scientific communication processes and the scientific knowledge management

Authors who have published in a subscription journal can do this by depositing the version of the article accepted for publication (version 2) in their own institution's repository. The impact of computer usage on scholarly communication among social scientists Sely Costa and Jack Meadows Loughborough University, UK Received 17 December 1999 Abstract. An examination has been made of the effects of using information technology on the communication of research by social scientists in Brazil. Two disciplines were studiedeconomics and sociology -via both interviews and a questionnaire survey. A small sample of UK social scientists was also interviewed. The results indicate that major changes in communication habits are occurring. These are already well advanced for informal communication and are beginning to appear for formal communication. Differences have been found between economists and sociologists, with the former more active in their use of electronic facilities. Along with such discipline-related differences, the developments also appear to be influenced, in part, by pressures from the research community and from the institutional environment. One significant impact of information technology seems to be an increasing democratisation of the international research community

___________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThis research’s main objective was to investigate if the characteristics of deafness studies, as a multidisciplinary subject, influence the patterns of scholarly communication of researchers that study it from a language perspective. Based on the basal concepts presented by Meadows (1999), Garvey (1979), Ziman (1984), on the scholarly communication models formulated by Garvey e Griffith (1979), Hurd (2000), Bjork (2005) e Costa (2008), and on the concepts about disciplinary relations discussed by Japiassu (1976), the conceptual model designed for the study included the necessary elements to the study of scholarly communication in communities formed by researchers from various disciplines. While the epistemological aspects guided this research, primarily for the analysis of the results, the methodological aspects that were adopted allowed a quantitative precision as well as qualitative depth, through a compound approach, with data collection methods using survey and documentary analysis. Based on its specific objectives, the research identified the disciplines that posses studies on the subject up to scholarly communication patterns. The results obtained revealed that the subject is of interest in Education, Phonoaudiology, Linguistics and Psychology. Notwithstanding the unique subject matter, these disciplines study various underlying subjects, where the qualitative approach is more widely used in the research. The results also revealed the multidisciplinarity of the subject and its partial influence on the scholarly communication, vis-à-vis the variety of sources used and publishing media, indicating influence of each discipline’s standard patterns of communication.Faculdade de Ciência da Informação (FCI)Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciência da Informaçã

This book analyzes the characteristics of the digital repositories in Latin America for the development of open access. In Latin America, the development of these systems by teaching and research institutions, the so-called institutional repositories, are appointed by scientific literature as a promising area for the fulfillment of the purposes of open access, due to the public source of research funding in the region and also to the very features of institutional repositories. For the development of this study it was conducted a systematic literature review, using literature and documents from Google Scholar and Web of Knowledge databases in order to the elaboration of a theoretical lens about the elements that define open access and features institutional repositories. As a result of this step were defined five selection criteria and eight dimensions of analysis for institutional repositories. The elements were used for the selection, mapping and characterization of 84 institutional repositories, that were selected in the a set of 289 digital repositories. The survey results showed that Latin America has significant advances in the development of institutional repositories, as compared to other regions, but it is still very incipient in programs and policies to promote open access by funding institutions of scientific knowledge production in the region

In a time so absorbed by new technologies which seem to dominate everything, the present study becomes relevant by assessing the patterns of scientific communication in Social and Human Sciences. Notwithstanding the problems which emerged from this research, the results obtained revealed the predominance of the printed form over the electronic one. However, we also made evident the growing use of the electronic form and the shift of paradigm among certain subjects deeply rooted in the production of knowledge through the traditional means. Another conclusion is the vital importance of the word processor in the production of knowledge and the importance of the e-mail as means of communication between peers. The final outcome of this study is the introduction of the two patterns of scientific communication presently best adapted to the Social and Human Sciences and the proposal of a new model of scientific communication
