Airplane Landing Accident: How Safe Is Use of Passenger Lap Seat Belts in Aircrafts?
BACKGROUND: Seat belts are considered the reason for seat belt syndrome, which mainly occurs during rapid deceleration in motor vehicle accidents. Seat belt syndrome is characterized by contusion of the front torso, intrathoracic or intraabdominal organ injuries, and spinal thoracic or lumbar chance fractures. CASE DESCRIPTION: This case study presents a 21-year-old female who was injured by a lap-type seat belt and diagnosed with seat belt syndrome after an airplane landing accident. She underwent surgery for lumbar chance fracture and abdominal injury. We discussed the possible harmful effects of lap seat belts in passenger seats on airplanes. CONCLUSIONS: While an airplane is in a flying position, a lap seat belt functions to protect the passenger from any turbulence. However, during the landing or take-off phase, it may not be enough to fully protect the passenger, especially during sudden deceleration accidents, which cause seat belt injuries and head traumas. Therefore the unique design of a double functional passenger seat belt harness, along with a 3- or 4-point buckle protruding from the shoulder, can serve as a more favorable protective measure in limiting the severity of injury a passenger receives. After the plane has taken off, the diagonal seat belt can then be unlocked, leaving the lap seat belt to remain firmly in place and secured
DETERMINING THE TEACHERS' LEVEL OF OBEYING THE ETHICAL RULES ACCORDING TO STUDENT PERCEPTION
On this research, it is aimed to determine the teachers’ level of obeying the ethical rules and find out about the relationship between instructors’ ethical values and various variables. Research, in which scanning method is used, is performed with 182 learners on 2015-2016 educational year. For data collection, “Teacher Ethical Value Scale according to Students Perception”, which is developed and tested for reliability by Gunduz and Coskun (2012). On statistical evaluation of gathered values, independent t-test, Mann Whitney u test and correlation matrix is used. On the other hand, values are evaluated on 0.01 and 0.05 meaningfulness level and their percentage, frequency, average and standard deviation values are also analysed. On the research, it is determined that class level and school type variables are effective ones on teachers’ ethical standard of judgement. Yet, it is seen that there is no meaningful difference on gender variable
This present thesis contains a comparative study of two legends of different cultures: "The Lovers of Teruel" in Spain and "Ferhat and Şirin" in Turkey. It is the first study that elaborates the analysis of a Spanish legend with a Turkish story from a comparative point of view using a large bibliography of leading scholars from Spain, Turkey and the entire world.
The study consists of two parts. The first part contains the analysis of the two stories in the oral tradition. In the first chapter analyses the diferences between the folk genders that belong two stories: the legend and halk hikayesi. The second chapter focuses on the origins of "The Lovers of Teruel" and its evolution in the oral culture of the country, analyzing the structure and folk motifs taht contains the first oral testimony of the story in Spain taht is written by notarial Yagüe de Salas. The third chapter is dedicated to the origins of the Turkish story and the comparative analysis of the structure of Pertev Naili Boratav and folk motifs of Antti Aarne of the five versions in Turkish oral tradition. The last chapter contains the comparative analysis of the structure and the folk motifs of the first testimonies of the Spanish and Turkish stories.
The second part consists of its most successful versions in the literature of two countries: The Lovers of Teruel of Juan Eugenio Hartzenbusch and Ferhat ile Şirin of Nazım Hikmet. The first chapter is dedicated to the life and the century of Hartzenbusch and the comparison of the two versions of the book; one is written in 1839, the first manuscript and the other in 1849. Wıth thıs study we see the evolution of the legend in literature and also the evolution of the drama in the 19th century. The second chapter consists of the life and era of Nazım Hikmet who cultivated his work within the social realism movement and is regarded as one of the authors of Turkish literature more known ın world. We chose the first publication of Ferhat ile Şirin and compare it with the version in Spanish Legend of Love, translated under the control of the same author. So we compare the diferences between the original text and the translation one and also the evolution of the legend in literature

Seed morphology and its systematic implications for genus Oxytropis DC. (Fabaceae)
WOS: 000367792300007In the present study, seeds of 13 Oxytropis DC. species (including two latest synonyms) classified in subg. Oxytropis (sect. Dolichocarpon, sect. Chrysantha and sect. Eumorpha), subg. Euoxytropis (sect. Orobia) and subg. Phacoxytropis (sect. Protoxytropis, sect. Janthina and sect. Mesogaea) from Turkey were examined using light and scanning electron microscopy to evaluate the taxonomic relevance of macro- and micro-morphological seed characters. As a result of the study, species-specific characters have been determined. Seeds exhibit variation in size, shape, surface sculpturing pattern, hilum position and weight. Seeds ranged from 1.61 to 4.04mm in length and from 1.02 to 2.56mm in width. Five different seed shapes were recognised, as prolonged semielliptic, reniform, prolonged reniform, quadratic and cardiform, with a length to width ratio ranging from 1.02 +/- 0.08 to 1.75 +/- 0.27. Rugulate, rugulate-reticulate and lophate sculpturing patterns were observed in the studied species. According to the results, seed characters, such as the size (length, width and the length/width ratio), the shape, the surface sculpturing and the weight appear to have low taxonomic value in distinguishing subgenera, sections and species.Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) [TBAG-105 T 180]We thank all the curators of herbaria (AEF, ANK, B, E, EGE, G, GAZI, GB, HUB, LE, VANF) which first author visited for their kind permission to work and The Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) for financial support (Project No: TBAG-105 T 180). Relationship between obesity and thyroid function in adults
Objectives: Obesity affects prognosis of many comorbid diseases negatively. This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between obesity and thyroid function. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted between December 2011 and December 2012. Consecutively selected adults who applied to the outpatient clinics of Family Medicine and Internal Medicine, at Marmara University Hospital were recruited in the study. Height and weight were measured and body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine (fT4), total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), triglyceride and glucose levels were measured for every participant. According to their BMI, participants were divided into three groups as normal weight (< 25), overweight (25-30) and obese (>= 30). Results: Data of 618 participants (53% female/47% male) was analyzed. Mean age was 43 +/- 15. There were 175 (28.3%) participants in normal weight, 242 (39.2%) in overweight and 201 (32.5%) in obese groups. No statistically significant difference was found between groups in terms of TSH or fT4. Statistically significant difference was found in terms of lipid profiles and blood glucose between groups. Atherogenic lipid levels (total cholesterol, LDL and triglyceride) and blood glucose were higher and HLD levels were lower in overweight or obese groups P<0.05) but there were no statistically significant differences between overweight and obese groups (P>0.05). Conclusion: This study is one of the few studies in the literature showing that there is no relationship between obesity and thyroid function
Effects on Blood Pressure Control and Compliance for Medical Treatment in Hypertensive Patients by Sending Daily SMS as a Reminder
Objective: According to the World Health Organization(WHO), drug non-compliance in chronic diseases affects health conditions of patients negatively. The aim of this study is to determine the effects on blood pressure control and drug compliance in hypertensive patients by sending daily short message service(SMS). Methods: In this randomized controlled study, hypertensive patients were selected and divided into control and intervention groups. Daily SMS reminder has been send to intervention group for two months. Weekly ambulatory blood pressure measurements before two visits have been requested of all the patients and measurements were done at the visits. Compliance was scaled by Modified Morisky Questionnaire. Blood pressure measurements and compliance of each group was compared. Results: Sixty patients were enrolled in the study: 45 were female, 15 male; mean age was 55 +/- 11 years; mean BMI was 30 +/- 5 kg/m2; mean number of tablets per day was 4 +/- 2 pills. There was no statistically significant difference between the average at visit and weekly blood pressure (BP) measurements at first visit of two groups. The average at visit and weekly BP measurements at second visit were found to be statistically significant lower and the average at visit and weekly BP measurement change between first and second visit was found to be statistically significant higher in the intervention group compared to the control group. Drug compliance ratio was 36,7% for the control group, 96,7% for the intervention group. Conclusion: Sending a daily reminder SMS is effective in increasing blood pressure control and enhancing drug compliance in hypertension patients
Thyroid hormones and BMI in obese children: One year follow up results
Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between thyroid hormone levels and obesity, lipid levels and weight changes. Patients and Methods: Five to eleven year old normal weight, overweight and obese children underwent measurements of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine (fT4), lipid profile and autoimmune thyroid antibodies. Children with high TSH were re-evaluated one year later without any intervention. Results: Three hundred children (126 obese, 74 overweight, 100 normal weight) were evaluated in the study. The rates of high TSH levels were 1.0% in normal weight, 9.5% in overweight and 11.9% in obese group (p=0.007). fT4 levels of all the children enrolled in the study were in normal range. None of the children had autoimmune antibody positivity. Obese children with high TSH had higher triglyceride levels than children with normal TSH (p=0.028). One year later, a significant decrease in body mass index (BMI) was accompanied by a significant decrease in TSH levels. Conclusion: TSH levels can be high in obese and overweight children. Obese and overweight children with elevated levels of TSH do not need to be treated pharmacologically, losing weight decreases TSH levels significantly
Strategies of Enunciative Erasure and Position Taken by the Author-Researcher Case of Doctoral Student Articles
The main purpose of this article is to examine the construction of authorship in scientific articles written by Algerian doctoral students. We focused on the personal subject pronouns (nous and on) as the main mark of the expression of subjectivity, trying to see how the identity of the author is constituted in the texts of these young researchers. The observations indicates tyhat, dispite the requirement of objectvity that caracterireres the discursive genre in research, the writings of doctotoral studients continue to include markers of the first person.
Although the Black Sea Region is humid, there have been many forest fires recently. The province of Bartin, located in this region, has forests rich in biodiversity. In addition, the province also includes the Western Kure Mountains, an extension of the Kure Mountains National Park, which is one of the 9 hot spots of our country. Considering these conditions, forest areas within the provincial borders of Bartin should be protected against fire risks. In this context, the aim of the study is to determine the forest fire risk in Bartin province. For this purpose, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), which is a useful tool, was used in the study. GIS, an advanced approach to processing and displaying data, stands out by enabling risk analysis. In the research, Grey Relational Analysis (GRA) method was used to determine the fire risk. GRA is an effective formula for assessing the degree of influence of factors. In the calculation, the factors affecting the fire and the emergency response factors were analyzed and mapped separately. Then, these maps were combined to create a fire risk map. According to the result of the fire risk map, 18% of Bartin province is a very high risk area. In these areas, the temperature is high, the altitude is low, and the presence of conifers has been remarkable
