Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Práticas baseadas em evidências nos contextos inclusivos de jardim de infância: intervenções inseridas nas rotinas
Get PDFPartindo da importância de promover práticas de qualidade e baseadas em
evidências no que diz respeito à inclusão de crianças com incapacidade, o objetivo deste
estudo é avaliar o impacto de uma ação de desenvolvimento profissional, nas
competências e capacidades dos profissionais que trabalham com crianças com
incapacidade entre os três e cinco anos, relativamente ao processo de tomada de decisão
e implementação de intervenções inseridas nas rotinas. Esta ação de desenvolvimento
profissional, baseada nos módulos do Projeto CONNECT e utilizando os materiais por
ele disponibilizados, foi realizada em três sessões de 2h30m.
Participaram neste estudo oito profissionais a desenvolver atividade em jardins
de infância inclusivos. Os seus conhecimentos acerca da temática em estudo foram
avaliados nos momentos pré e pós formação através da análise de um caso hipotético.
Foi ainda utilizada uma subamostra de três educadoras, com o objetivo de se avaliarem
as suas práticas. Estas educadoras foram submetidas a observações gravadas em vídeo
das rotinas diárias das suas salas, também antes e após a ação de desenvolvimento
profissional. As observações foram posteriormente avaliadas com uma versão
experimental traduzida em português da Inclusive Classroom Profile (ICP), escala de
observação estruturada (Soukakou, 2007), que permitiu averiguar a qualidade das
respostas e das práticas diárias da sala face às necessidades das crianças com
incapacidade.
Verificou-se um enriquecimento nos conhecimentos dos participantes acerca
das intervenções inseridas nas rotinas e dos processos de tomada de decisão, tendo-se
obtido valores significativamente superiores na análise de caso posterior à formação.
Quanto às práticas das educadoras, não se verificaram diferenças significativas antes e
após a formação. Por fim, através da avaliação da adequabilidade e satisfação dos
participantes acerca da ação de desenvolvimento profissional, os participantes
consideraram a formação adequada, embora de curta duração. Os resultados são
discutidos tendo em conta as suas implicações a nível da formação dos profissionais.Based on the need to promote evidence-based and high quality practices with
respect to the inclusion of children with disabilities, the purpose of this study is to
evaluate the impact of a professional development program on skills and capabilities of
practitioners working with children with disabilities between three and five years old,
about the decision making process and implementation of embedding interventions.
This professional development program, based on the CONNECT project and its
materials, was performed in three 2h30m sessions.
Eight practitioners working in inclusive kindergartens participated in this study.
To assess their skills on the theme, we built a hypothetical case to be analyzed before
and after the implementation of the professional development program. Additionally, a
subsample of participants comprising three early childhood educators was selected in
order to assess their practices. Video observations were recorded in each educator
classrooms before and after the professional development program. These observations
were subsequently evaluated with an experimental version translated to portuguese of
the Inclusive Classroom Profile (ICP), a structured observation scale, (Soukakou, 2007),
that allowed to evaluate the quality of responses and daily practices of the classroom to
the needs of children with disabilities.
There was enrichment in the participants’ knowledge on embedded interventions
and decision making process, yielding significantly higher values after the training. In
reference to educators practices there were no significant differences before and after
training. Finally, the satisfaction and adequacy of the professional development
program was evaluated, revealing that practitioners considered it an appropriate
training, although they found the length of the formation to be too short. The results are

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
Get PDFWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

Avaliação da satisfação das famílias com as respostas de intervenção precoce na região Oeste: um estudo quantitativo com as famílias e os profissionais
Get PDFA intervenção centrada na criança e na família resulta de uma abordagem ecológica e sistémica que salienta o papel da família na intervenção precoce. Nesta concepção, o técnico deverá funcionar como um catalizador, incentivando e ajudando as famílias a implementar estratégias apropriadas para lidar, não só com as dificuldades do seu filho, mas com todas as alterações que a existência de uma criança com necessidades educativas especiais acarreta.
Segundo alguns estudos, a satisfação das famílias está directamente dependente do seu grau de envolvimento nos programas de intervenção precoce. Assim, a presente investigação procurou avaliar o grau de satisfação das famílias na região Oeste de Portugal com as respostas que estão a ser dadas pelos Agrupamentos de Escola de referência para a intervenção precoce nos vários concelhos. Para o efeito desenvolveu-se um estudo quantitativo que contou com a colaboração da Equipa de Apoio às Escolas do Oeste. Participaram, neste estudo, 56 famílias e 10 profissionais que responderam a um conjunto de questões sobre as respostas de intervenção precoce na região. As famílias responderam também a um questionário de satisfação parental, adaptado da escala do Project Dakota (Kovack & Jacks, 1989).
Os resultados são bastante significativos, na medida em que as famílias apresentam níveis de satisfação bastante elevados, em todos os domínios avaliados. Em termos comparativos, o domínio que apresenta valores médios mais baixos é o que se refere à rede social de suporte, na medida em que nem todas as famílias avaliaram de forma positiva esta dimensão. Este facto poderá ser sugestivo de uma nova linha de investigação, uma vez que seria interessante perceber no futuro as razões subjacentes a uma menor satisfação das famílias com a rede de apoio.Systemic and ecological approach emphasizes the role of families in early intervention. In this conception, professionals should act as a catalyst, encouraging and helping families to implement appropriate strategies to deal not only with the difficulties of his children, but with all the changes that the existence of a child with special needs entails. According to some studies, the family satisfaction was directly dependent on their degree of involvement in early intervention programs. Thus, this research sought to assess the degree of family satisfaction with the answers being given by the early intervention team, in the western region of Portugal. For this purpose we developed a quantitative study with the collaboration of the teachers and families. The participants in this study were 56 families and 10 professionals who answer to a number of questions about early intervention in the region. The families also answered to a questionnaire of parental satisfaction, adapted from the scale of Project Dakota (Kovack & Jacks, 1989).
The results are quite significant to the extent that families have very high levels of satisfaction in all domains assessed. By comparison, the lowest average values regarded the social support network. This may be suggestive of a new line of research, since it would be interesting to see, in future researches, the reasons behind family lowest satisfaction with the social network support
