Polibio e Callistene: una polemica non personale?

No full text
The paper has been committed by the organizers of the Volume "The shadow of Polybius. Intertextuality as research Tool in Greek Historiography", in order to complete a full analysis of the impact of this historian over his predecessors; the paper studies carefully all the quotations of Callisthenes made by Polybius – with a particular care for the manuscript tradition of the fragmentary Book XII - and highlights Polybius’ mental attitude towards Callisthenes. The author defines also the place of Polybius among the various ancient traditions about Callisthenes both as a person and as an historian

Studia na temat św. Jana Bosko – między zachwytem a pytaniami krytycznymi

No full text
This contribution deals with the theme of the studies made on Don Bosco. In the article the author equally takes into consideration both the studies carried out in the Salesian world and the contributions which do not belong to the Salesian world in the strict sense. The main objective was to analyze the various periods in which different authors made a valid contribution in deepening the figure of Don Bosco throughout his history. Thanks to the edition of the sources and the publications of numerous studies, the traditional image of Don Bosco is no longer the only one. Alongside it gradually grows a richer image, more differentiated and more in conformity with the historical reality of its time. The renewed image of Don Bosco is more suggestive. The use of more reliable historical data has made it possible to have a clearer vision of both the ecclesial religious situations and the social and educational ones, in which it was necessary to relocate Don Bosco. Thanks to the considerations made, Don Bosco appears as one who in his care and action knew how to relate to the concrete situations of his own time. In that climate he developed a pedagogical and spiritual orientation which also for the future could be a light and strength both inside and outside the Salesian world.

How are falls and fear of falling associated with objectively measured physical activity in a cohort of community-dwelling older men?

No full text
Falls affect approximately one third of community-dwelling older adults each year and have serious health and social consequences. Fear of falling (FOF) (lack of confidence in maintaining balance during normal activities) affects many older adults, irrespective of whether they have actually experienced falls. Both falls and fear of falls may result in restrictions of physical activity, which in turn have health consequences. To date the relation between (i) falls and (ii) fear of falling with physical activity have not been investigated using objectively measured activity data which permits examination of different intensities of activity and sedentary behaviour

No full text
In this work we present a MEMS-based eNVM concept, designed for sustaining harsh environmental conditions. The endurance and the data retention features are investigated through a set of electrical characterization measurements. A guideline on the physical principles on which the memory relies is also included. © 2011 IEEE

Reliability and performance characterization of a mems-based non-volatile switch

No full text
This paper reports about the reliability and performance characterization of a CMOS-based non-volatile memory (NVM), which operating principle is based on stiction forces within a MEMS switch. Unlike any other NVM technologies operating principles, the data retention of this technology improves at higher temperatures. The switches have been proven to operate in a extremely wide temperature range from -150 ̊C to 300 ̊C, in a 4MRad/s radiation environment and withstanding acceleration forces up to 30,000g. The technology is an ideal candidate for highly reliable non-volatile memory in harsh environmental applications, like auto-motive, defense, space, down-well and geo-thermal. This NVM switch and a tunable RF-MEMS capacitor will be the first products based on this CMOS integrated MEMS platform

Reconfigurable small antenna for mobile phone using MEMS tunable capacitor

No full text
In this paper we present a tunable PIFA which can be used in a mobile terminal. A NanoMech™ process enabled MEMS digital variable capacitor has been used as a capacitive load to the antenna. The antenna occupies a volume of just 1.3 cc and is targeted to be placed at the bottom corner of the device. With the help of tunability the antenna is able to cover from 704-960MHz in the low-band and 1710-2170MHz in the high-band, thus covering a wide range of frequency bands required for GSM/WCDMA/LTE systems. The MEMS device has an equivalent series inductance of less than 0.1nH hence the variation in the capacitance value with respect to frequency is less than 10%up to 5GHz. Further, the equivalent series resistance (ESR) of the digital variable capacitor is <0.4 across the whole frequency range of interest, hence causing very low insertion loss to the antenna. The tunable antenna is characterized by measuring it in 3D anechoic chamber. The measured total efficiency of the antenna varies from -4 to -2dB for 700MHz-960MHz and -3dB to -2dB for 1710-2170MHz.</p

Are Changes in Ocular Aberrations With Age a Significant Problem for Refractive Surgery?

7 pages, 3 figures.-- PMID: 12361160 [PubMed].-- Presented at the 3rd International Congress of Wavefront Sensing and Aberration-free Refractive Correction, February 15-17, 2002, Interlaken, Switzerland. We discuss current knowledge about the change of aberrations with aging, cataract surgery, and laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) for myopia. Based on this evidence, we speculate about the long-term expectations for postoperative LASIK eyes in terms of aberrations. Standard myopic LASIK surgery produces a significant increase in aberrations, particularly corneal spherical aberration, which changes to positive values. Aberrations increase with age, and in particular, the spherical aberration of the crystalline lens shifts toward positive values. Therefore, no compensatory effect is expected to occur with age after standard myopic LASIK, but rather the unusually high amount of aberrations in postoperative LASIK patients is expected to worsen with age. The amount of aberrations in patients after cataract surgery with implantation of standard intraocular lenses (IOLs) is higher than in normal young subjects. If an ideal customized ablation (not inducing aberrations and reducing naturally existing aberrations) is ever possible, the perfect correction will not last (due to the change of aberrations with age), and aberrations of the crystalline lens corrected on the cornea are likely to reappear after conventional cataract surgery. Potential benefits of customized IOLs for cataract surgery and improved optics in older patients are discussed. The author acknowledges the co-authors of the published results reviewed here: James Maclellan and Stephen A. Om te voorkomen dat scheepvaartroutes dichtslibben moeten waterwegen en havens in deltagebieden regelmatig worden gebaggerd.
