The European Union and Reflexive Modernization: Is Anthony Giddens' and Ulrich Beck's Theory of Late Modernity Convincing as a Political Discourse of Europeanization?
The article discusses Anthony Giddens’ and Ulrich Beck’s vision of the European Union, which they constructed on the basis of theoretical insights developed in their sociology of late modernity. Starting from the “moderate version” of political discourse theory, the author tries to show how Giddens’ and Beck’s sociology of late modernity has a strong normative-political dimension that neglects the social and political reality of classical modernity, and shows how political discursive interpretation of their theory can even be derived from their own methodological presuppositions. The author concludes that, once outside the protective belt of legitimacy provided by the category of neutral scientific theory, Giddens’ and Beck’s theory, as one of the political discursive projects of European integration, has to consider more seriously the persistent counterpolitics of classical modernity: the nation state institutions, the strength of national identity and the nation state allegiances, whether those are understood as primordial givens or as firmly established discursive-political forces of the contemporary world
Zmierzch cywilizacji? Rozważania wokół teorii Barbera, Giddensa i Becka

In order to examinethe theories: Benjamin Barber, Anthony Giddens and Ulrich Beck. The conclusions state thatthere is no way to predict whether actually gone civilizations and the emergence of the McWorld(as it defined Barber) because, according to Popper, the future cannot be predicted. Nevertheless, the paper presents the processes leading to the disappearance of civilizations, and which aremainly from globalization

Józef Beck a Czechosłowacja w roku 1938. Czy wchodziła w grę alternatywna opcja polityki polskiej?
This article examines the highly contentious topic of Polish diplomacy’s actions towards Czechoslovakia during the Sudeten crisis, which ultimately led to the resolutions reached at the Munich Conference, attended by the heads of government from the four powers. It also investigates the Polish ultimatum issued to the government in Prague, demanding the cession of Cieszyn Silesia. The author analyses the dilemmas faced by Minister Józef Beck and poses questions about whether a different political approach could have emerged in 1938, particularly regarding the appeasement policy of the Western powers.Artykuł poświęcony został niezmiernie spornemu problemowi postępowania polskiej dyplomacji wobec Czechosłowacji podczas kryzysu sudeckiego, zakończonego uchwałami konferencji szefów rządów czterech mocarstw w Monachium i polskim ultimatum do rządu w Pradze z żądaniem cesji Śląska Cieszyńskiego. Autor analizuje dylematy ministra Józefa Becka i stawia pytania o możliwości innej opcji politycznej w realiach 1938 r., tj. appeasement policy mocarstw zachodnich
“Una semana de siete días” as “A Week is Seven Days”: Translating Magali García Ramis for my Senior Thesis Project
From the very beginning, Becka Garonzik was a very focused and enthusiastic student. During her intensive study abroad experience in Cuba (2003), she had the unique opportunity to meet with Nancy Morejón, Afro-Cuban poet, translator and poet. Inspired by Morejón’s work, Becka decided she wanted to become a translator of Latin American literature. She wanted US readers to love the history, culture, and language of this region of the world that was so close to her heart. Her passion was contagious! After she returned from Cuba, she took courses in linguistics and Latin American literature, and she participated in summer internships in the Dominican Republic. It did not come as a surprise that she decided to complete her personal and intellectual journey through a senior thesis. Her goal was to translate for the first time into English a short-story by Puerto Rican author Magalí García Ramis. She selected that story because it summarized the type of courses she had taken at Goucher. To serve as mentors and directors for her project, Becka selected three faculty members with experience in literary translation, creative writing, women studies and Latin American literature. After a semester of intense research on translation theory and readings on Puerto Rico’s rich culture and social politics, Becka produced an extraordinary translation. Not only she succeed in evoking the Puerto Rican identity embedded in the story but she was able to recreate in English the complexities of a narrative voice that shifts throughout the story. The result is a beautiful literary piece that manages to evoke the same cultural values and human emotions as it does in its original Spanish form.“Una semana de siete días as A Week is Seven Days” is my reflection on my senior thesis project, in which I translated the above story by Magali García Ramis from Spanish into English. During my tenure at Goucher I became fascinated with the field of literary translation and the question of how a translator makes literature written in one language and one culture accessible to people of another language and culture. The thesis project was an ideal opportunity in which to explore this question, not only because it gave me an entire year to grapple with scholars’ divergent ideas about translation, but also because I had the expertise of three esteemed Goucher faculty, Professors Cristina Saenz de Tejada, Irline François, and Michelle Tokarczyk to guide me along the way. In addition, devoting my year to one short piece of fiction allowed me to learn the craft of literary translation through trial and error and to give A Week is Seven Days the number of edits it needed to become a worthy translation of García Ramis’s story. My goal in undertaking the project was to give the English-speaking reader at least some idea of the profound strength and heart-rending beauty of García Ramis’s writing, and I am glad that, through this publication, people will have the chance to read the translation and decide for themselves whether I achieved my goal.Cristina Saenz de Tejadahttp://blogs.goucher.edu/verge/3-2
Religion, Democracy and Solidary Personalism: On the Way to World Culture and Civilization
At the beginning of the article the author considers recent works of Peter Sloterdijk and Ulrich Beck who want to outline the cosmopolitan culture and civilization of peace and tolerance, and also of cooperation which would be suitable for the present situation. The author points to certain problems, limitations and deficiency of their views and suggestions. He turns, in his searching for the answer about the meaning and value of faith for the modern world, to the work of René Girard, and illustrates his importance through the consideration of the problem of the factual implementation of human rights. The article ends with the defense of solidary personalism and with the consideration of the meaning of faith and religion for its realization on the one hand, and with a contribution to the answer about the proper faith and religion at present times on the other
The Globalization of Taste: the Influence of Gloalization on Choice
This paper focuses on the consequences that globalization processes had on the world, especially after the Second World War. It tries to show how globalization and globalism, as the ideology of globalization, shaped many fields of the society. It analyses how the globalization is manifested, primarily in culture, using taste and choice as culture's expressions. Connections between globalization, taste and choice are made through out the paper using tangible examples. Those examples are diet and cuisine, but also ecological consequences that are a result of globalization and actions of multinational corporations. While synthesising globalizaton, taste and choice, the paper theoretically relies on the work of authors that dealt with the phenomenons of the modern society, such as Ulrich Beck and Pierre Bourdieu as the most influential author in defining taste
The author presents that further democratisation and opening of political arenas (polity) for environmentally aware general public are necessary pre-conditions for designing environmental protection policy (policy) and implementation of sustainable development that will be able to cope with modern hardship and environmental protection issues. By involving general public into communication processes and decision-making, the roles of government have been changing inevitably, specifically on different levels, and professions. By developing his argument, the author relies on Offe, Kitschelt, Hannah Arendt and Beck, as well as on other authors in the field of associational and deliberative democracy.
GLOBAL CIVIL SOCIETY AS A COUNTERPOWER
Na końcu autor rozważa przydatność tak uproszczonego ujmowania globalnego społeczeństwa obywatelskiego oraz przedstawia zarys modelu alternatywnego, opartego o metaforę korpuskularno-falową, która wyznaczyć może dalsze poszukiwania adekwatnego modelu społeczeństwa na poziomie globalnymThe aim of the article is to criticize the global civil society as a counterpower, i.e. social power opposing to the rule of bureaucracy and global capital. The basic point of reference are the theories of Manuel Castells and Ulrich Beck, representing the movement under discussion. By means of comparing them the author wishes to indicate the weaknesses common to the discourse around the global civil society as a counterpower. The main flaw of this discourse turns out to be the insufficient recognition of agency. Next, the grounds for attractiveness of this model are indicated as well as the contradictions inherent to it. In the end, the author reflects on the usefulness of the simplified approach to the global civil society and presents an outline of an alternative model. He proposes a wave-corpuscle metaphor, which may serve as means of further search for an adequate model of society on a global level
