    Succeeding in Innovation: Key Insights on the Role of R&D and Technological Acquisition Drawn from Company Data

    This paper discusses the relationship between a company's investment in innovation and its success in introducing new product and/or process innovations. In doing so, this analysis departs from the standard approach which puts forward a homogenous R&D-based knowledge production function by introducing different types of innovation investments (R&D and technology acquisition) for different sets of companies. Using the Community Innovation Survey (CIS) dataset comprising more than 3000 Italian manufacturing companies, the econometric analysis adopts a set of techniques which allows to control for the sample selection, endogeneity and simultaneity problems which arise when dealing with CIS data. The main findings are summarised as follows: (1) beyond the acknowledged effect of R&D in increasing the probability of success of product innovation, a larger-than-expected role is played by technology acquisition in the innovation process; (2) the relative importance of R&D and technology acquisition varies significantly across different types of companies where crucial dimensions of analysis are company size and the technological domain of a sector

    Regulation of HIPK Proteins by MicroRNAs

    The homeodomain-interacting protein kinase (HIPK) family consists of four evolutionarily conserved and highly related nuclear serine/threonine kinases of recent discovery. They interact with homeobox proteins and other transcription factors, as well as transcriptional coactivators or corepressors depending on the cellular context. HIPK proteins are sensors for various extracellular stimuli, which control key cellular functions such as signal transduction to downstream effectors that regulate apoptosis, embryonic development, DNA-damage response, and cellular proliferation. Thus, HIPKs are involved in proliferative diseases such as cancer and fibrosis. mRNA levels and protein stability tightly regulate expression levels of HIPKs

Dal 2000 EcoOne, sezione ecologica dell’Associazione Internazionale New Humanity-NGO (status consultivo generale dell’ECOSOC delle Nazioni Unite, partner ufficiale dell’UNESCO, accreditata presso l’UNEP) ha organizzato numerose conferenze internazionali su temi ambientali. L’incontro del 2020 “Nuove vie verso l’ecologia integrale” ha discusso le sfide economiche, ambientali e sociali della transizione ecologica: alcuni paper selezionati della conferenza sono pubblicati in questo rapporto.In this time of crisis, we discover the need for anthropological values to guide the navigation of our species on this planet. Since 2000 EcoOne, the ecological section of the International New Humanity Association-NGO (general consultative status of the United Nations ECOSOC, official partner of UNESCO, accredited to UNEP) has organized numerous international conferences on environmental issues.     Imported skill-biased technological change in developing countries

    This paper discusses the occurrence of skill-enhancing technology import, namely, the relationship between imports of embodied technology and widening skill-based employment differentials in low- and middle-income countries. Generalized method of moments (GMM) techniques are applied to an original panel dataset comprising 28 manufacturing sectors for 23 countries over a decade. Econometric results provide robust evidence of the determinants of widening employment differentials in low- and middle-income countries. In particular, the proposed empirical evidence indicates capital-skill complementarity as a possible source of skill bias, while imported skill-enhancing technology emerges as an additional driver of increasing demand for the skilled workers in these countries

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Update on the Regulation of HIPK1, HIPK2 and HIPK3 Protein Kinases by microRNAs

    The homeodomain-interacting protein kinases (HIPKs) HIPK1, HIPK2 and HIPK3 are Ser/Thr kinases which interact with homeobox proteins and other transcription factors, acting as transcriptional coactivators or corepressors. HIPKs contribute to regulate several biological processes, such as signal transduction, apoptosis, embryonic development, DNA-damage response, and cellular proliferation, in response to various extracellular stimuli. Recently it has emerged that, in addition to their role in cancer, fibrosis and diabetes, HIPKs may also be involved in other human diseases, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Rett syndrome, cerebellar diseases, and retinal vascular dysfunction. Methods: Here, we update our previous paper concerning the regulation of HIPK proteins expression by microRNAs (miRNAs), pointing out the most recent findings about new cellular mechanisms and diseases which are affected by the interplay between HIPKs and miRNAs. Conclusion: Recently, it has emerged that HIPKs and their related miRNAs are involved in diabetic nephropathy, gastric cancer chemoresistance, cervical cancer progression, and recombinant protein expression in cultured cells. Interestingly, circular RNAs (circRNAs) deriving from HIPK2 and HIPK3 loci also modulate cellular proliferation and viability by sponging several miRNAs, thus emerging as new putative therapeutic targets for diabetes-associated retinal vascular dysfunction, astrogliosis and cancer

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Neurologic improvement after peripheral blood stem cell transplantation in poems

    We read with interest the recent article by Kuwabara et al.1 describing the clinical and electrophysiologic findings in 9 patients with polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, M-protein, and skin changes (POEMS) syndrome and treated with autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (auto-PBSCT). From May 2003 until September 2006, we treated 4 patients with POEMS syndrome with chemotherapy and auto-PBSCT.2 There were 3 men and 1 woman with a median age of 53 years (range 44–62). Three patients had severe and rapidly progressive sensory– motor peripheral neuropathy with predominant involvement of the lower limbs leading to inability to walk, reduced muscle strength of the upper limbs, absent deep tendon reflexes, and distal sensory impairment
