Marcelo dascal and the literal meaning debates
No full textWhat role does literal meaning play in people’s understanding of indirect and figurative language? Scholars from many disciplines have debated this issue forseveral decades. This chapter describes these debates, especially focusing on the arguments between the author and Marcelo Dascal. I suggest that Dascal’s defense of “moderate literalism” may have some validity, contrary to some of my earlier arguments against this point of view. Marcelo Cohen’s Work : Between Fantastic Sociology and Fictional Geography
No full textCette thèse étudie les notions de géographie imaginaire et de sociologie fantastique dans l’œuvre de Marcelo Cohen (Buenos Aires, 1951). Le corpus de travail comprend l’ensemble de la production de fiction narrative de l’auteur (contes, nouvelles et romans en une vingtaine d’ouvrages) entre son premier recueil de récits, Lo que queda (1972), et son roman Balada (2011). La thèse est organisée en trois parties : la première (« Marcelo Cohen et son œuvre. Perspectives théoriques et méthodologiques ») propose une présentation de l’auteur et de son œuvre et un bilan théorique et pratique des notions de géographie imaginaire et de sociologie fantastique ; la deuxième (« Écrire l’espace ») analyse la construction de l’espace dans le corpus choisi dans une double démarche chronologique et figurative ; la troisième (« Littérature et société ») se penche sur les manifestations des dimensions idéologiques, sociales et politiques, et sur les relations entre l’individu et la société dans les ouvrages de Marcelo Cohen. Le travail s’achève par une réflexion globale sur la poétique et l’esthétique de l’auteur argentin.This thesis considers such concepts as fictional Geography and fantastic Sociology in Marcelo Cohen’s work (Buenos Aires, 1951).The body of this research includes all the narrative fiction by this author (some twenty tales, short stories and novels in total), between his first collection of stories, Lo que queda (1972), and his novel Balada (2011).Our thesis develops three domains : the first one (« Marcelo Cohen and his work, a theoretical and methodological outlook ») introduces the author and his work, along with a theoretical and practical evaluation of such concepts as fictional Geography and fantastic Sociology ; the second one (« Space in writing ») analyzes the make of space in the selected books, in a dual approach : both chronological and representational ; the last one (« Literature and society ») addresses the expressions of ideological, sociological and political dimensions, plus the relationship between a particular person and his/her society in Marcelo Cohen’s works. This research ends with a global consideration of poetry and estheticism in the work of our Argentinean author
The lazy life of lipid-linked oligosaccharides in all life domain
No full textLipid-linked oligosaccharides (LLOs) play an important role in the N-glycosylation pathway as the donor substrate of oligosaccharyltransferases (OSTs), which are responsible for the en bloc transfer of glycan chains onto a nascent polypeptide. The lipid component of LLO in both eukarya and archaea consists of a dolichol, and an undecaprenol in prokarya, whereas the number of isoprene units may change between species. Given the potential relevance of LLOs and their related enzymes to diverse biotechnological applications, obtaining reliable LLO models from distinct domains of life could support further studies on complex formation and their processing by OSTs, as well as protein engineering on such systems. In this work, molecular modeling techniques, such as quantum mechanics calculations, molecular dynamics simulations, and metadynamics were employed to study eukaryotic (Glc3-Man9-GlcNAc2-PP-Dolichol), bacterial (Glc1-GalNAc5-Bac1-PP-Undecaprenol), and archaeal (Glc1-Man1-Gal1-Man1-Glc1-Gal1-Glc1-P-Dolichol) LLOs in membrane bilayers. Microsecond molecular dynamics simulations and metadynamics calculations of LLOs revealed that glycan chains are more prone to interact with the membrane lipid head groups, while the PP linkages are positioned at the lipid phosphate head groups level. The dynamics of isoprenoid chains embedded within the bilayer are described, and membrane dynamics and related properties are also investigated. Overall, there are similarities regarding the structure and dynamics of the eukaryotic, the bacterial, and the archaeal LLOs in bilayers, which can support the comprehension of their association with OSTs. These data may support future studies on the transferring mechanism of the oligosaccharide chain to an acceptor protein.<br/

No full textIn current Brazilian constitutional debate there may be no subject that has generated as many publications as that of constitutional principles. Many of these publications, however, are a mere repetition of what has been written before. The publication of Marcelo Neves' book ”Entre Hídra e Hércules" is certainly an exception in this scenario. It brings new light to the debate and proposes a change of course. In this shorte Article, I defend my views against the objections Neves raises to some of my ideas in his book to show that his objections are unsound and that he does not in fact offer an alternative to what he calls "still dominant models".

Cloud-based molecular simulations for everyone
This is a repository where you can find a Jupyter notebook scripts for running Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations using OpenMM engine and AMBER and CHARMM force fields files on Google Colab. This repository is a supplementary material of the paper "Making it rain: Cloud-based molecular simulations for everyone" and we encourage you to read it before using this pipeline.
The main goal of this work is to demonstrate how to harness the power of cloud-computing to run microsecond-long MD simulations in a cheap and yet feasible fashion.
