    Professor Patricia Melzer is the author of Death in the Shape of a Young Girl: Women’s Poltical Violence in the Red Army Faction (New York University Press, 2015). By focusing her study on the Red Army Faction (RAF), a West German terrorist group which had many female members, including leaders, Melzer complicates our contemporary understanding of feminism and violence. The RAF committed acts of assassination, bombings, bank robberies, and kidnappings from 1970 to the early 1990s in order to challenge what it saw as the West German state’s support of capitalism, imperialism, and patriarchy. While contemporary feminism is closely linked to positions of nonviolence, this was less the case at the founding of the Red Army Faction, where patriarchy shared responsibility with economic and political structures for women’s oppression. As feminism narrowed its focus to patriarchal violence – especially the personal physical abuse of men against women – the nurturing role of women and the importance of nonviolent political resistance became more essential to feminism’s understanding of itself. Melzer also analyzes the ways German media portrayed the lives and acts of these terrorists through a gendered lens that was very often inaccurate and misleading. This placed the contemporaneous German feminist movement in the delicate position of trying to respond to the misrepresentation of female RAF members while distancing itself from their terrorist acts. Juxtaposing feminism and violence in the Red Army Faction offers valuable insights on the nature of the modern women’s movement.     Augenscheinlich gibt es bis dato keinerlei wissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung mit der Darstellung von hörgeschädigten Figuren im Film. Aus diesem Fakt erschließt sich der Anspruch, dieses Themengebiet zu ergründen. Um das Feld der Forschung zu konkretisieren, werden exemplarisch die hörgeschädigten Protagonisten zweier Filme betrachtet. Hierbei handelt es sich einerseits um Ruben aus dem Film „Sound of Metal“ von 2019 und andererseits um Conny und Simon aus „Du sollst hören“ von 2022

    Arthur Melzer is professor of political science at Michigan State University. He is the author, editor, or coeditor of eleven books, including The Supreme Court and the Idea of Constitutionalism. Jerry Weinberger is University Distinguished Professor Emeritus of political science at Michigan State University. He has written, edited, and coedited several books on political thought, including Benjamin Franklin Unmasked: On the Unity of His Moral, Religious, and Political Thought. M. Richard Zinman is University Distinguished Professor Emeritus of political theory in James Madison College at Michigan State University. With Melzer and Weinberger, he has co-edited several books on democracy and modern politics.This Kansas Open Books title is funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Humanities Open Book Program.Multiculturalism: is it the face of twenty-first century America or merely a passing intellectual fad? With its celebration of ethnic diversity and strong advocacy of tolerance, this contemporary movement provides philosophical justification for many who seek to correct social inequities. But while its proponents see it as a means of promoting self-esteem among marginalized groups, its critics see it as a dangerous form of relativism that culminates, paradoxically, in a new form of intolerance. The fourteen essays in this volume address the pros and cons of multiculturalism and explore its relationship with liberal democracy. A team of stellar contributors—C. Vann Woodward, Linda Chavez, Stanley Fish, and others—offers viewpoints on multiculturalism from the perspectives of political theory, history, philosophy, and fiction. The editors first help explain multiculturalism by contrasting it with the Sixties counterculture. How is it, they ask, that yesterday's radicals, so concerned with economic justice, have given way to the multiculturalist preoccupation with identity politics?     Trendanalyse der KMK-Statistiken zur sonderpädagogischen Förderung 1994 bis 2019

    Die Ständige Konferenz der Kultusminister der Länder (KMK) gibt alle zwei Jahre eine Statistik zur sonderpädagogischen Förderung in Deutschland heraus. Der vorliegende Beitrag stellt eine erstmals durchgeführte Trendanalyse über den gesamten Berichtszeitraum seit dem Schuljahr 1994/95 vor. Insgesamt lässt sich festhalten, dass nur die Förderquote im sonderpädagogischen Schwerpunkt Lernen sinkt, alle anderen Schwerpunkte einen bisweilen sehr deutlichen Zuwachs aufweisen. Zudem zeigt sich, dass sich die Entwicklungstrends (Steigungskoeffizienten) von Förder-, Separations- und Integrationsquote mit dem Zeitpunkt des Inkrafttretens der UN-BRK signifikant ändern: Während Förder- und Integrationsquote nach 2009 steiler ansteigen als vorher, zeigt sich bei der Separationsquote eine Trendwende hin zu einer leicht abnehmenden Tendenz. (DIPF/Orig.)The standing conference of the state ministers of education (Kultusministerkonferenz [KMK]) publishes statistics on special needs education in Germany every two years. The present article presents a trend analysis carried out for the first time over the entire reporting period since the school year 1994/95. Overall, it can be said that only the rate of diagnoses in the special educational focus on learning is falling, all other focus areas show an increase. In addition, it can be seen that the trends (regression coefficients) of the rate of diagnoses, the exclusion rate and the inclusion rate change significantly with the UN CRPD being ratified: While rate of diagnoses and the inclusion rate increase more steeply after 2009 than before, there is a trend reversal in the exclusion rate towards a slightly decreasing trend.
