Reverse Iontophoresis: A New Approach to Measure Blood Glucose Level
[[abstract]]This study focused on the investigation of the possibility of monitoring blood glucose levels in
humans by non-invasively extracting glucose and lactate from blood through the skin using reverse
iontophoresis. In vitro reverse iontophoresis studies have indicated that the optimum switching mode
for reverse iontophoresis of lactate and glucose are continuous direct current and direct current with
electrode polarity reversal every 15 minutes, respectively. The application of a current combined with
electrode polarity reversal every 15 minutes has been suggested for use in humans. The reverse
iontophoresis technique was applied to 10 healthy volunteers. Glucose and lactate were successfully
extracted through the subjects’ skin into the methylcellulose gel of the electrodes. A fair-good
correlation (r2 = 0.62) between the subject’s blood glucose level and the ratio of glucose to lactate
levels in the collection gels was observed after two outliers were removed from the regression equation.
The result suggests that it may be possible to non-invasively monitor the blood glucose levels using this
new approach free of the need for calibration with a blood sample

Validation of Ultrasound Measurement of Vastus Lateralis for Appendicular Skeletal Muscle Mass in Chronic Kidney Disease Patients with Hemodialysis
Background: Chronic kidney disease patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) are at a high risk of developing sarcopenia. This study aimed to validate the performance of ultrasound (US) measurements of the vastus lateralis (VL) for estimating muscle mass and diagnosing sarcopenia in CKD patients with HD. Methods: Forty-six patients were enrolled in this study. Muscle thickness (MT) and echo intensity (EI) of VL, physical performance, and biochemical markers were collected to establish a linear regression model for predicting appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM), using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) as the reference standard. The model’s performance was validated, and its diagnostic accuracy for sarcopenia was also evaluated. Results: An ASM prediction model was derived: −20.17 + 1.90 × MT_VL (cm) + 1.58 × male + 0.16 × Height (cm) + 0.09 × Weight (kg) + 0.05 × Age (year), with a standard estimated error of 1.44 kg and adjusted R-squared of 0.84. The model exhibited high correlation and an acceptable limit of agreement, compared to DXA measurement. EI displayed a negative correlation with ASM and MT. Conclusions: The ASM adjusted with BMI demonstrated superior performance in diagnosing sarcopenia compared to the ASM adjusted with height. Ultrasound provides a cost-effective bedside tool for evaluating muscle conditions in HD patients
Quantitative Ultrasound Texture Analysis to Assess the Spastic Muscles in Stroke Patients
This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of sonoelastography for determining echotexture in post-stroke patients. Moreover, the relationships of muscle echotexture features, muscle stiffness, and functional performance in spastic muscle were explored. The study population comprised 22 males with stroke. The echotexture features (entropy and energy) of the biceps brachii muscles (BBM) in both arms were extracted by local binary pattern (LBP) from ultrasound images, whereas the stiffness of BBM was assessed by shear wave velocity (SWV) in the transverse and longitudinal planes. The Fugl–Meyer assessment (FMA) was used to assess the functional performance of the upper arm. The results showed that echotexture was more inhomogeneous in the paretic BBM than in the non-paretic BBM. SWV was significantly faster in paretic BBM than in non-paretic BBM. Both echotexture features were significantly correlated with SWV in the longitudinal plane. The feature of energy was significantly negatively correlated with FMA in the longitudinal plane and was significantly positively correlated with the duration from stroke onset in the transverse plane. The echotexture extracted by LBP may be a promising approach for quantitative assessment of the spastic BBM in post-stroke patients
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
