Missed Encounters: Engaged French Intelectuals and the Yugoslav Wars
In her contribution, Nadège Ragaru investigates what she calls a paradox: The warsin Yugoslavia provoked a wide array of citizen initiatives, petitions, and demonstrations. Yet,their impact on French diplomacy was limited. The French government remained opposed tothe idea of military intervention until the 1995 elections. The author examines three aspects ofthis paradox: First, the encounters between Paris and Sarajevo resulted in missed opportunities. For the French intellectuals the conflict turned into an arena where several prominent figurestested their authority, attempted to bolster their legitimacy, and introduced the divisions thatstructure their competing intellectual fields. Second, while “local voices” were solicited bythe media and inaugurated “the era of the witness” (Wieviorka), their selective use tendedto obscure the conflict. Finally, the wars represented a critical moment for academics witha Yugoslav background. Many had not worked on Yugoslav issues before and witnessedpowerlessly as former academic solidarities in France and Yugoslavia collapsed. This situationin turn impeded a more adequate analysis of the Yugoslav wars

Infectious disease does not impact the lying and grooming behaviour of post-parturient dairy cows
Behaviour is commonly used to detect sickness in animals, but the impact of sickness on lying and maternal behaviours around parturition is not well understood. The objective was to assess the effects of sickness on the lying and grooming behaviours of dairy cows in the first 24 h after giving birth. Cows were categorized as 'sick' (n = 8) if they had at least one rectal temperature ≥39.1 °C and one clinical sign of illness (mastitis, pneumonia or an unknown infection) within 24 h of calving. These cows were match-paired for parity with cows that had no rectal temperature ≥39.1 °C and no clinical signs of illness up to 3 d after calving (n = 8; 'not sick'). The duration and latency of cow behaviours (standing, lying, lying bouts, lying close to calf, and grooming of the calf) and calf behaviours (standing and lying) were recorded for 24 h post-partum. We found no differences in the behaviour of sick and not sick cows and their calves post-calving, except that sick cows took longer to lie down near their calf after calving compared to those without illness. Cows may be more motivated to groom and spend time with their calf than to express sickness behaviours immediately after giving birth

In this book, Nadège Broustau
sheds light on the results of her doctoral thesis by the means of ulterior
theoretical and methodological works. The author proposes a new way of analyzing
the media discourse, here considered as a social archive: the study of the
evolution of the media representations

The labyrinth as a metadiscursive motif in Christian Grenier's literary creation
The labyrinth motif appears regularly in Christian Grenier's novels. In diegesis, it is always linked to myth and the fates of Daedalus, Theseus and Ariadne. It is also a diegetic motif that structures the setting, organizes the characters' quest and generates suspense. But this motif is above all a metadiscursive metaphor that theorizes the author's writing. In particular, he evokes the meandering construction of police intrigues. It also represents the referential games developed by Christian Grenier: By mixing the words of other writers with his own, offers his readers the opportunity to enter a kind of intertextual labyrinth
The issue of the breton identity revealed through the narrative patterns in Le Cheval d’orgueil by Pierre-Jakez Hélias
This essay highlights the notion of “bretonnity” in Le Cheval d’orgueil, Pierre-Jakez Hélias’ work, which was the last of the Terres Humaines series published by Plon in 1975. The homodiegetic narration segmented in eight chapters traces the childhood of the author and the significant events that punctuated his life until he went to high school in Quimper, in the bigouden county in Brittany, at the beginning of the 20th century. The main aim of this study is to examine the narrative processes in the narrator’s speech and how these processes are relevant to describe Breton identity as it was a century ago and as it still is today. To meet this aim, we observe the privileged link that the author establishes with his reader throughout the narration, based on mutual trust between the author, who wants to convey a message, and the reader, who refers to the veracity of the events recounted in the text. We also note the plurality of genres in this work which researchers qualify as an ethnographic testimony with an autobiographical aspect, but which can also be designated as a life story. Finally, we analyse the impact of the author’s introspection in the narration and the value of memory in this story

The various food crises, massively covered by the media, which hit France since the 90s caused many reactions among the consumers, in particular a rejection of some foods and a generalized mistrust towards the agro-alimentary chain. In the first part the author studies the context and the characteristics of the fears related to the foodstuffs as well as the perception and the expectations of the consumers. In the second part she presents the answers brought by the scientists, the authorities, the producers, the manufacturers and the distributors to try to set up a strategy of reinsurance in order to regain a shaken confidence. Lastly, in the third part, the author deals with the crisis'impacts on the relationship between consumers and agro-alimentary professionals. She underlines the necessary evolutions of the current marketing towards a more relational marketing which enhances the social bond between a company and the consumers.
