    World Technology Usage Lags

    We present evidence on the differences in the intensity with which ten major technologies are used in 185 countries across the world. We do so by calculating how many years ago these technologies were used in the U.S. at the same intensity as they are used in the countries in our sample. We denote these time lags as technology usage lags and compare them with lags in real GDP per capita. We find that (i) technology usage lags are large, often comparable to lags in real GDP per capita, (ii) usage lags are highly correlated with lags in per-capita income, and (iii) usage lags are highly correlated across technologies. The productivity differentials between the state of the art technologies that we consider and the ones they replace combined with the usage lags that we document, lead us to infer that technology usage disparities might account for a large part of cross-country TFP differentials.

Curso de Agronomia.Uso dos conhecimentos agronômicos como ferramenta de educação ambiental O estágio de conclusão de curso foi realizado junto ao Projeto Tecnologias Sociais para a Gestão da Água (TSGA), sob a orientação e supervisão do Professor do Departamento de Engenharia Rural Dr Jucinei José Comin. O projeto TSGA é coordenado pelo Professor do Departamento de Engenharia Sanitária e Ambiental da UFSC, Paulo Belli Filho e patrocinado pelo Programa Petrobrás Socioambiental. O objetivo do estágio foi programar e implantar ações no âmbito da educação ambiental para estudantes do ensino fundamental. Por se tratar de um tema bastante amplo e complexo, as ações de educação ambiental apresentam caráter interdisciplinar, sendo essencial a participação de profissionais de várias áreas do conhecimento científico, dentre eles os profissionais de agronomia. As atividades realizadas no estágio compreenderam a inserção dos conhecimentos agronômicos como ferramenta de educação ambiental para estudantes do ensino fundamental dos municípios de Biguaçu e Braço do Norte, ambos no estado de Santa Catarina. Dentre as atividades realizadas estão a realização de um dia de campo sobre a gestão e uso adequado de dejetos suínos na agricultura e a recuperação de áreas degradadas, onde estiveram presentes estudantes do ensino fundamental e agricultores do município de Braço do Norte. As outras duas ações de educação ambiental foram realizadas na Escola Municipal Donato Alípio de Campos, em Biguaçu – SC, onde se trabalhou a gestão dos resíduos orgânicos produzidos pela unidade escolar e também ocorreu a realização de uma oficina sobre a recuperação de áreas degradadas, onde foram abordadas técnicas de recuperação de área degradada, os danos ambientais oriundos da atividade humana e seus impactos na sociedade.Use of agronomic knowledge as an environmental education tool The internship of completion was held at Project Tecnologias Sociais para a Gestão da Água (TSGA), under the guidance and supervision of Professor, Department of Rural Engineering Dr José Jucinei Comin. The project is coordinated by Professor, Department of Sanitary and Environmental Engineering at UFSC, Paul Belli Filho and sponsored by Petrobras Socioambiental Program. The objective of this internship was to develop and implement actions within environmental education for elementary school students. Because it is a broad and complex subject, environmental education presents interdisciplinary in its actions, the participation of professionals from various areas, including professional agronomy scientific knowledge is essential. The activities performed on stage comprised the integration of agronomic knowledge as an environmental education tool for elementary school students from the municipalities of Biguaçu and Braço do Norte, both in the state of Santa Catarina. Among the activities are conducting a field day over the management and appropriate use of pig slurry in agriculture and reclamation, where he attended elementary school students and farmers in the municipality of Braço do Norte. The other two environmental education activities were held at the Escola Municipal Donato Alipio de Campos, in Biguaçu - SC, where he worked managing organic waste produced by the school unit and also conducting a workshop on the recovery of degraded areas occurred where were addressed environmental damage and its impacts on society

    Binding Balls: Fast detection of Binding Sites using a property of Spherical Fourier Transform

    ABSTRACT The functional prediction of proteins is one of the most challenging problems in modern biology. An established computational technique involves the identification of threedimensional local similarities in proteins. In this article, we present a novel method to quickly identify promising binding sites. Our aim is to efficiently detect putative binding sites without explicitly aligning them. Using the theory of Spherical Harmonics, a candidate binding site is modeled as a Binding Ball. The Binding Ball signature, offered by the Spherical Fourier coefficients, can be efficiently used for a fast detection of putative regions. Our contribution includes the Binding Ball modeling and the definition of a scoring function that does not require aligning candidate regions. Our scoring function can be computed efficiently using a property of Spherical Fourier transform (SFT) that avoids the evaluation of all alignments. Experiments on different ligands show good discrimination power when searching for known binding sites. Moreover, we prove that this method can save up to 40% in time compared with traditional approaches

    Based on SEXAFS experiments, a new model for the structure of the Si(111)7 Ã 7: Ge interface prepared at room temperature is presented. At ~ 1 ML coverage the Ge atoms adsorb in the atop site and bond together to form chains running parallel to the surface. Additional Si chains bridge together adjacent germanium chains and terminate the structure. At higher coverages strain build-up initiates the formation of amorphous Ge

    Dynamic consistency of conditional simple temporal networks via mean payoff games: A singly-exponential time DC-checking

    Conditional Simple Temporal Network (CSTN) is a constraint-based graph-formalism for conditional temporal planning. It offers a more flexible formalism than the equivalent CSTP model of Tsamardinos, Vidal and Pollack, from which it was derived mainly as a sound formalization. Three notions of consistency arise for CSTNs and CSTPs: weak, strong, and dynamic. Dynamic consistency is the most interesting notion, but it is also the most challenging and it was conjectured to be hard to assess. Tsamardinos, Vidal and Pollack gave a doubly-exponential time algorithm for deciding whether a CSTN is dynamically-consistent and to produce, in the positive case, a dynamic execution strategy of exponential size. In the present work we offer a proof that deciding whether a CSTN is dynamically-consistent is coNP-hard and provide the first singly-exponential time algorithm for this problem, also producing a dynamic execution strategy whenever the input CSTN is dynamically-consistent. The algorithm is based on a novel connection with Mean Payoff Games, a family of two-player infinite games played on finite graphs, well known for having applications in model-checking and formal verification. The presentation of such connection is mediated by the Hyper Temporal Network model, a tractable generalization of Simple Temporal Networks whose consistency checking is equivalent to determining Mean Payoff Games. In order to analyse the algorithm we introduce a refined notion of dynamic-consistency, named epsilon-dynamic-consistency, and present a sharp lower bounding analysis on the critical value of the reaction time where the CSTN transits from being, to not being, dynamically-consistent. The proof technique introduced in this analysis of the reaction time is applicable more generally when dealing with linear difference constraints which include strict inequalities. © 2015 IEEE
