Tarquinio Merula nelle fonti documentarie
Alcuni rilievi in area lombardo-padana.
Dinamiche finanziarie, organici e compiete quaresimali
The study focuses on several fundamental aspects of one of the most interesting
chapels in the region of the Po Valley during a period (1580-1650) characterized
by incessant experimentation. Within this framework, the financial dynamics stand
out as important to the evolution of the personnel and the Lenten complines.
From one standpoint, they assisted the growing commitment of the congregation
of S. Antonio in maintaining the expenses of a chapel that between the sixteenth
and seventeenth centuries not only increased the number of musicians, but also
expanded the space assigned to liturgical music. The investigation, in particular,
draws connections between the evolution of the the annual budget of the ARCA
and the economic investments required by the ever more burdensome demands
of vocal-instrumental groups of considerable size.
As for the increase in the number of permanent personnel, the study takes
into account several peculiarities that concern the voices of the higher registers
and the configuation of the instrumental sphere. In this sphere, as was the case
in the most prestigious established chapels of Northern Italy, one of the most
important innovations towards the end of the 1640s consisted of the substitution
of trombones with viols.
The experimentation with new configurations that were introduced in the
concerti composed for the most important feasts of the year concerned, above all,
the feast of S. Antonio and the Lenten complines. These last featured a distinctive
scoring that was used in only a few churches in Northern Italy (Santa Maria
Maggiore in Bergamo and the Steccata in Parma).
The employment of temporary singers and instrumentalists active in Padua
and, in some cases, coming from other cities (primarily Venice), allowed the
chapel at S. Antonio to introduce a sumptuous polychoral sound and make use
of especially interesting spatial arrangements. The magnificence with which the last canonical hour of the day was celebrated shows how even at S. Antonio, the
discipline of the post-Tridentine era is circumvented by the Baroque conceptions
that established a strong correlation between devotional ethos and spectacle, assigning
to music the role of promoting piety in the faithful
introduzione
The studies included in this volume engage with the subject from different angles, and gather a surprising multitude of aspects that act on a variety of levels, but that converge in their factual scope. The presence of Franciscan composers is developed in multiple directions (from musical chapels to publication issues), feeding community activities that belong to the deepest and most authentic levels of Baroque civilization in the Po valley. In addition, the present proceedings scrutinize how the Franciscan composers’ works are often quite original and genuine contributions to the development of taste and style during the Baroque. In the rediscovery and further study of such contributions, inquiries that concentrate on a focused point of view regarding specific people, dynamics, milieus and practices (also of everyday life), and which have often been considered peripheral in traditional historiography, have proven essential. Such close readings, though also oriented towards the contextualization of the numerous (not a priori defined) criteria seems to aim at – using the language micro-history theorists – the redefinition of value hierarchies, and the emergence of unknown scenarios and new questions as a consequence
Reviews:M Eisenberg, Notes -New York- Music Library Association- 68, no. 4, (2012): 816-818; V. On the Extraction of Accurate Non-Quasi-Static Transistor Models for E-Band Amplifier Design: Learning From the Past
In this article, a non-quasi-static (NQS) nonlinear transistor model oriented to E-band power amplifier (PA) design is discussed. A new formulation that describes the millimeter-wave NQS behavior is proposed and the entire model extraction procedure is detailed with the aim of putting in evidence the specific issues posed by working at millimeter-wave frequencies. The model is used in the design of a family of monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMICs) for realizing complete system-in-package (SIP) transmitter and receiver. The model is first fully validated at transistor level by comparing its predictions with linear and nonlinear measurements, and then with measurements carried out on the realized MMIC amplifiers at E-band
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Such changes not only affected the composition of the chapel, in which the number of salaried musicians (singers and instrumentalists) was gradually amplified, but also the normative sphere that regulated the activity of the Paduan insitution. In this respect one of the most interesting aspects concerns the liturgical calendar, which in the space of thirty years introduced a growing number of feasts which featured “concerts.” The auspicious (and expensive!) production of sacred music, in evident contrast with Post-Tridentine positions but in absolute assonance with Baroque conceptions, is justified by instituting a close correlation between devotional ethos and spectacularity. In other words, the music is assigned the task of boosting the piety of the faithful. The elusion of Post-Tridentine disciplinarity is above all unequivocally evidenced in the Lenten Compline and in the Triduum of Holy Week, celebrated with vocal and instrumental personnel often augmented by the enlistment of outside musicians. The study of the stable personnel and of those employed on these and other important recurrences (namely the feast of Sant’Antonio and the dedication of the basilica) shows how the operating procedures implemented by the Paduan regents appear in full syntony with the most advanced orientations manifested by the Paduan chapels (San Marco and Santa Maria Maggiore in Bergamo, first and foremost) in the last decades of the sixteenth century
