From the ‘freedom of the streets’: a biographical study of culture and social change in the life and work of writer Jack Common (1903-1968)
No full textThe author assesses the life and work of the Newcastle upon Tyne born writer Jack Common in the light of the massive social, economic and cultural changes which have affected the North East of England and wider society through the period of Common's life and afterwards. He seeks to point out the relevance of Common to the present day in terms of his ideas about class, community and the individual and in the light of Common's sense of rebelliousness influenced by a process of grass-roots education and self-improvement. In addition, he draws upon his own extensive experience in community arts and education, looking, in particular, at the work he and others have carried out on Common over the last thirty years and assessing its value in the light of recent political changes. The author draws together the range of biographical and literary criticism carried out by a range of individuals over this period of time and brings into print hitherto unpublished material about Common's life and work by interviewing family members and associates, exploring the Common Archive at Newcastle University and other largely ignored sources, and studying Common's significant association with George Orwell in great detail. Through all of this, he seeks to argue that Common's life and ideas remain worthy of close attention in the present day
Minimising bulk lifetime degradation during the processing of interdigitated back contact silicon solar cell
No full textIn this work, we develop a fabrication process for an interdigitated back contact solar cell using BBr3 diffusion to form the p+ region and POCl3 diffusion to form the n+ regions. We use the industry standard technology computer-aided design modelling package, Synopsys Sentaurus, to optimize the geometry of the device using doping profiles derived from electrochemical capacitance voltage measurements. Cells are fabricated using n-type float-zone silicon substrates with an emitter fraction of 60%, with localized back surface field and contact holes. Key factors affecting cell performance are identified including the impact of e-beam evaporation, dry etch damage, and bulk defects in the float zone silicon substrate. It is shown that a preoxidation treatment of the wafer can lead to a 2 ms improvement in bulk minority carrier lifetime at the cell level, resulting in a 4% absolute efficiency boost

Someone has to do it: towards a practical defence of politicians
No full textIn response to rising popular disenchantment with elected officials, numerous scholars have sought to defend politics and restate why it matters. For the most part, however, these theoretical arguments overlook the views and reflections of politicians themselves. As a step towards filling this gap, the author surveys politician-centred studies from around the world and the reflections of academics who have become politicians. By paying careful attention to what ‘insiders’ say about life in politics, the author constructs a practical rather than theoretical defence of the vocation and the people who undertake it. The author argues that politicians' views remind one that human endeavour is central to the purpose and function of politics and associated political institutions. To link the practical views and experiences of politicians with the emerging literature on demonisation, the author revisits the work of Arendt and Weber. The author concludes that while one may not always like who politicians are or the ways they operate, revaluing endeavour allows one to give credit where credit is due; politicians may regularly disappoint people but representative democracy does not work without them
Small fish swimming in the shape of a shark: why politicians join political parties in the Pacific islands
No full textPolitical parties are ubiquitous features of contemporary models of representative democracy and are widely believed to be integral to transition, and yet persistently democratic Pacific Island countries tend to have ‘weakly’ institutionalised parties – some have none at all – that have little influence on the mobilisation of voters during elections. Party theory largely assumes that politicians form parties to win elections: the author asks why, given the commonly cited irrelevance of party politics in much of the Pacific, politicians join political parties at all. Drawing on 96 biographical accounts – including 72 in-depth interviews –he interprets the explanations politicians give for joining, leaving and changing parties. The author identifies three narratives. The first accords with an augmented rational actor model, the second with a responsible parties model and the third points to intrinsic motivations that are largely overlooked in the existing literature. The author concludes that a comprehensive account must include all three interpretations
A note on the map expansion of Jack polynomials

the expansion of the Jack polynomial in the power-sum
basis as a non-orientability generating series of bipartite maps whose edges
are decorated with the boxes of the partition .
We conjecture here a variant of this expansion in which we restrict the sum
on maps whose edges are injectively decorated by the boxes of . We
prove this conjecture for Jack polynomials indexed by 2-column partitions. The
proof uses a mix of combinatorial methods and differential operator
