No full text

No full text

A Gender-Based Approach to Historical Child Support: Comment on \u3ci\u3eColucci v Colucci\u3c/i\u3e

In June 2021 the Supreme Court of Canada (the “Court”) released Colucci v Colucci, its second decision in twelve months dealing with the complex subject of historical (commonly referred to as retroactive) child support. The case worked a significant shift in the law, arguably the first major revision to the law since the Court’s initial consideration of historical child support in DBS, in 2006. This comment suggests that Colucci represents a new understanding of the way that claims for historical child support should be considered in Canadian family law. The comment argues that in changing the applicable framework, the Court has endorsed a gendered approach to historical child support law that responds to many of the concerns that flowed from DBS. Drawing on the text of the decision, as well as relevant case law and scholarship, we outline the theoretical foundations for the changes brought by Colucci, as well as their practical implications. We suggest that in clarifying child support as the right of the child, decreasing the emphasis on certainty for payors, and stressing the necessity of financial disclosure, the Court has feminized the law of historical child support. We explain how, using that feminist lens, Colucci modifies the framework for adjudicating historical child support claims, by creating a presumption in favour of an award in the presence of a change of income, softening the three-year time limit of so-called retroactivity, and repositioning and reconceptualizing the DBS factors which now inform how far back a historical child support award should go. In fleshing out and analyzing these changes, we consider the ways in which Colucci may better serve to promote substantive gender equality in historical child support law by responding to women and children’s lived realities

Analysis of microstructure of a non-convex functional with penalization term

AbstractWe study the properties of the minimizers of a singularly perturbed non-convex functional with a penalization term Fε,μ(v,u;I)=12ε2∫Ivxx2dx+12∫IW(vx)dx+μ2ε2∫I(v−u)2dx, where I=(0,1), 0<ε≪1 and μ>0 are parameters, u is a given function and W(p)=(p2−1)2. We analyze the phenomenon of microstructure formation and show the dependence on μ and u

NKG2A Immune Checkpoint in Vδ2 T Cells: Emerging Application in Cancer Immunotherapy

No full text
Immune regulation has revolutionized cancer treatment with the introduction of T-cell-targeted immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). This successful immunotherapy has led to a more complete view of cancer that now considers not only the cancer cells to be targeted and destroyed but also the immune environment of the cancer cells. Current challenges associated with the enhancement of ICI effects are increasing the fraction of responding patients through personalized combinations of multiple ICIs and overcoming acquired resistance. This requires a complete overview of the anti-tumor immune response, which depends on a complex interplay between innate and adaptive immune cells with the tumor microenvironment. The NKG2A was revealed to be a key immune checkpoint for both Natural Killer (NK) cells and T cells. Monalizumab, a humanized anti-NKG2A antibody, enhances NK cell activity against various tumor cells and rescues CD8 αβ T cell function in combination with PD-1/PD-L1 blockade. In this review, we discuss the potential for targeting NKG2A expressed on tumor-sensing human γδ T cells, mostly on the specific Vδ2 T cell subset, in order to emphasize its importance and potential in the development of new ICI-based therapeutic approaches

The endowment effect with different possession times and types of items

No full text
The vast literature dealing with the endowment effect (EE) revolves around untangling the various determinants that may be at work in producing the effect itself. We examine two of these likely determinants that remain under-researched: The first is the effect that the length of possession may have on the EE. The second is the type of good (tangible, intangible or exchange goods) used to test the effect. Using an online questionnaire experiment, we investigate these aspects using three different items – a mug, an Amazon gift card, and a quarterly subscription to Spotify – testing whether the EE occurs when subjects imagine owning the item for different lengths of time. We find that the EE appears clearly for all types of goods, while the results are less clear when considering the duration of possession
